Week 2

Dear MUMS Community,

It's hard to believe we are already two weeks into the 26-27 School Year! While the weeks have been short, they have been jam packed with new information, routine building, culture and climate shaping joy! I would be surprised if your student doesn't need a lot of rest this weekend!

Please check in with your student about classroom expectations, how to check Power School and additionally whether or not they are interested in a club or sport, some of which began this week! Next week there will be more of a focus on content and skills for learning as we continue to move through the first Quarter.

Thank you for being flexible through the first few weeks of transportation challenges. We are grateful to those who have adapted to the bussing changes and impressed by how well students have navigated this transition. Additionally, we really appreciate those who are picking up their students by car who have honored our requests to keep our drive way and Middle road as clear as possible during dismissal time. Last week I sent an email about this, which I have included below as well.

Have a great four day weekend and thank you for being a partner in this work!

Best,

Michaela

From the MYP Coordinator

Greetings MUMS Caregivers!

It has been a busy first week at MUMS! Teachers and students have been busy establishing new routines, setting expectations for the year, and diving right into learning.

Here at MUMS, in addition to academic proficiencies, all students are scored on their Approaches to Learning, or ATLs. The MUMS ATLs include Organization, Collaboration, and Self-Management. You can see more detail about these in Appendix B of our Teaching and Learning Guide, linked on the website.

This time of year, Organization can be a great ATL to discuss with your student at home! Juggling many classes at once, organization can be a huge challenge for many middle schoolers. But taking the time to learn strategies is a life-long skill that will benefit students for years to come.

đź’ˇTalk to your student: Are they using their planner? How are they organizing all their papers and materials from class? Is their google drive organized? Do they know how to find class materials (google classroom?) and how to contact a teacher when needed?

Student Forms

In early August Caregivers were sent a Welcome letter via USPS that included forms/paperwork that needed to be filled out. These forms are important to return to us as we use them to update our records to have the most current information on file. Forms that need to be filled out and returned are:

  • ACSD Directory Information, FERPA/COPPA Annual Form
  • ACSD Field Trip Permission & Early Dismissal Emergency Plan Annual Form
  • Student Information Form
  • Health Forms

If you have not filled out/returned these forms please do so by September 11th.

Thank you!

Panarama Screener Information and Opt Out Letter

Panorama Screener

We know that social emotional learning (SEL) is crucial for our students’ success in school and in life, so across ACSD we are working on systems to support strong SEL teaching and learning in our schools. As part of that work, we are using Panorama surveys, research-backed SEL measurement tools. We will use the data we collect with this assessment to reflect on student learning and strengthen our programs and instruction to help all students succeed.

ACSD students have been taking this survey for 4 years now, and we are actively using the data at the school and district level. At MUMS, it helps us to know both how students are doing as well as respond with whole class, grade, and individual supports as needed.

This survey will be given to students in grades 3-12 between this week and 09/14. The survey asks students to self-reflect on skills related to self-management, self-awareness, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness. We ask that all students participate, because their feedback provides valuable insights to help us improve and adapt. K-2 students do not participate directly in the survey. Instead, K-2 teachers complete an SEL Teacher Perception checklist for each student.

Please fill out this google form on or before September 11th only if you wish to opt your child out of taking this survey. Thank you in advance for supporting this important work. If you have any questions please contact Michaela Wisell, Principal at 382-1202.

Bike, Skateboard, and Scooter Safety Tips

Please be sure that if your student is riding a bike, e-bike, skateboard, or scooter to school they are following the rules of the road, looking both ways before crossing the road and walking their equipment through the bus circle before they begin their ride.

We have a lot of traffic during arrival and dismissal and we want everyone to arrive at their destination safely.

student pick up guidelines/traffic flow for car riders

  • Deerfield Lane Access: When the main pickup circle at MUMS is full, access to Deerfield Lane will be temporarily closed until space opens up in the circle. Please reroute to a non-congested zone (see below).

  • Middle Road Rerouting: If you are waiting on Middle Road when Deerfield Lane is closed, staff will direct you to proceed past Deerfield Lane to park in our gravel lot, or turn around in South Ridge and proceed back toward Court street.

  • Next Steps: After turning around, you may either 1) park in the designated spots along Middle Road or 2) head back out to Court Street/Hannaford Lot to enter again when the traffic clears up.

We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause and sincerely appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work together to keep our students, buses, and neighbors safe!
