Literacy
This week, we read Yeh-Shen, a Chinese folktale that is a retelling of the classic Cinderella story. As we read, students practiced making inferences by using clues from the text and their own thinking to better understand the characters and events. We also analyzed the characters, paying close attention to their actions, words, feelings, and motivations. Students worked to identify the central message of the story and explain how the events and characters helped develop that message. We also explored why authors choose to describe characters in specific ways and how those descriptions give us clues about a character’s personality, traits, and role in the story. Students did a great job using evidence from the text to support their thinking!
Writing
Students developed opinion statements about Yeh-Shen and thought carefully about the character traits she demonstrates throughout the story. We then went back into the text to find specific details and examples that support our opinions. Students practiced explaining how the evidence they found connects to their thinking rather than simply listing details from the story. After gathering their evidence, students began organizing their ideas into a clear structure for their papers. We are working on making sure our opinions are supported with strong text evidence.
Math
This week, we completed Lesson 6, where students learned strategies for adding two-digit numbers.
Students practiced using base-ten blocks to represent tens and ones, breaking apart numbers before adding, and using open number lines to solve problems and show their thinking. We also focused on explaining our strategies and understanding that there are multiple ways to solve a problem.
Please continue to support your student at home by practicing the strategies we are learning in class and encouraging them to explain their thinking. After break, we will begin Lesson 7, where students will use similar strategies to subtract two-digit numbers.
