Flex Time! How to Make the Most of Thursday Flex Time to Get Caught Up, Get Support, or Get Ahead!

Flex Time Intervention sessions provide time for students to receive support every Thursday during the instructional day. The purpose of this time is to allow a struggling student some extra time in a smaller group setting to learn the skills they may be struggling with during class time. There are also opportunities for students to enrich their learning if they are doing well in all of their classes.

Each week, a student may be assigned to a specific skill-based Flex Time session by one of their teachers. Our students’ academic success is important; therefore, it is an expectation that students attend the Flex session they are assigned to by their teacher. If a student is not assigned to a session, they may select a session for academic support, time to complete schoolwork, or to extend their learning in a class.

Flex time is academic time built into the regular school day for students to participate in sessions such as:

● Interventions and tutoring on specific skills

● Extension and enrichment

● Skill assessment and reassessment

● Life skills/college and career readiness

● Open academic sessions

Flex Time can help students achieve academic success in the following ways:

● Increased understanding of the concepts taught in your classes.

● A time to catch up in classes you were absent for.

● Opportunity to participate in extension or enrichment activities to expand learning.

● Grade improvement.

● Improved performance on tests such as AP, SAT, ACT.

● Opportunity to increase your college and career readiness.

● Overall increase in academic achievement.

BCHS Flex Time provides a great opportunity for students to get extra support to increase academic achievement and success, and to help prepare them for the future. Please visit the Boulder Creek High School website for the Flex Bell Schedule.

Career and Technical Education Leaders Represent BCHS

The Educators Rising and DECA students went to the DVUSD District office September 13th for CTSO Officer Training. The Student Officers interacted with four other high schools from our district. The purpose of this training is to train the students how to run an effective CTSO and to focus on professional skills and working with others. We had a successful day and planned collaboratively by planning events such as Donating, Fund-raising, meeting dates.

New Spaces to Learn and Collaborate!

BCHS is so excited to have new, multi-functional spaces within the Maricopa County Regional Library for our students to collaborate. The library spaces will allow for classes to come together during the school day for projects, guest speakers, alternative learning spaces, or intervention and support. This is the first space of this kind at BCHS which allows for students to have access to library resources and a learning environment for instruction to continue. We are so grateful for the new space to support our students at BCHS!

MCSO Training at BCHS

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office hosted Active Shooter Training on the BCHS campus on September 17th and 18th. This was an opportunity for law enforcement to get to know the BCHS campus, respond and strategize to simulations using the campus facilities, and for BCHS administration, security, and teaching staff to learn about police response to active shooter situations. We are grateful for MCSO using our school to help support school safety and response time at BCHS.

BCHS Interact Club Makes a Difference!

Students involved in the BCHS Interact Club started September off strong with posting "Take a Compliment" posters around campus. Students quickly took the compliments and handed them to their peers, teachers, and other staff. It is amazing what a positive difference small words of kindness can make in someone's day! Thank you to our Interact students and sponsor, Mrs. Chazan, for making a beautiful difference at BC!

Check out our new Bus Driver

Tom Clarke is a BCHS teacher and the XC/Track coach. This summer he worked on receiving his CDL to drive buses to help out with the bus driver shortage. His maiden voyage was driving the Spiritline team to Shadow Ridge! BCHS is lucky to have such a dedicated teacher and coach.

**If you are interested in driving a bus, DVUSD Transportation will train you. You can even chose who you want to drive for! Just the Baseball team? You got it! Only the Beach Volleyball Team? Perfect! If you are interested or know someone please reach out to Kirstin.Ledin@dvusd.org.**

BCHS Professional Learning Communities: Coming together to Support Student Learning

Most Friday's during the school year, students get out just a bit early to allow for our teachers to collaborate and support student learning. The 90 minutes that are dedicated to DVUSD PLC time are crucial to BCHS student learning and success. Teachers meet in level teams to collaborate on designing instruction, assessment, and analyzing student data to determine which supports are needed to help our students learn essential course skills. Teachers use this information to adjust classroom instruction, to design targeted intervention or open student sessions for Flex Time, and to create next steps to rally around students and their learning!

Ed Professions

Ed Professions has hit the ground running, with job shadowing and a guest speaker in the first month. Job shadowing at BCHS was a success. Students learned about confidentiality and professionalism. We got so many compliments from teachers about how the students conducted themselves within the classroom and how nice it was to receive thank you notes afterwards. We continue to get new students signed up for the class who are excited to be there. Our first unit was Myself as a Learner. Next, we move onto the History of Education and the Stages of Development. ~Selena Huggins
