DHS, DMS students release salmon into local waterways

April may bring spring showers but for Davison Middle School and Davison High School students, it is also the month when the salmon they've raised since November is released into local waterways.

On April 14, Davison High School students in Ms. Pam Ruggerio's environmental science and Mr. Ryan Kelsey's art classes released at Stepping Stones Falls below the dam of the Flint River.

District Science Coordinator James Emmerling said the fish will make their way through the Flint River to the Saginaw River and into Saginaw Bay where they will grow to adulthood in Lake Huron.

"When they are ready to reproduce, the hope is that they will return to this area to spawn, eventually leading to a thriving population," he said.

This is the third year the high school has participated in the Michigan DNR Salmon in the Classroom program where hundreds of students around the state in grades three through 12 raise, learn about and release young Chinook salmon in approved waterways.

"We released over 150 salmon and had over 70 students participate in the release at Stepping Stone Falls on the Flint River," Mr. Kelsey said. "Students in Art, Environmental Science and the DHS Environmental Club all learn about raising our Chinook Salmon and the importance of maintaining healthy local waterways. Our DHS art classes create drawings, paintings and sculptures of native fish, mammals and plants, all while learning how to take care of our salmon with daily feedings and weekly measurements of our water parameters."

In addition to the salmon release, students also visited For-Mar Nature Center where they analyzed river water quality in the Flint River.

"Davison is part of the Flint River Watershed," Emmerling said. "By taking samples of water from the river, students collect data to determine the health of the ecosystem. This is very similar to a doctor taking a blood sample to analyze a patient’s health; students conducted a variety of chemical tests."

Students also sampled the benthic macro invertebrates (insects) living on the bottom of the river. The quality of the water can be determined by the species of insects found.

Students also had the opportunity to try their hand at fly fishing, thanks to volunteers from Trout Unlimited. And For-Mar staff engaged students in a nature presentation and hike.

Davison Middle School students released 104 Chinook salmon they were raising in the Black River at Abernathy Regional Park on April 24.
Around 400 seventh graders were involved in the activities throughout the day, which included scavenger hunts, fish species identification activities, and even some animals from For-Mar Nature Center.

The salmon were raised from eggs that were introduced to Mrs. Kerri Major's Science classroom in November.

"Students helped to monitor the water and feed the fish over the months," Mrs. Major said. "The eggs grew to about 3-4 inches in length before they were ready to be released into the wild."

Kindergarten students celebrate Farm Day

Kindergarten students from Thomson and Hill elementary schools had the opportunity to make butter, milk a cow, feel sheep's wool and get up close and personal with a young goat, chickens, ducks, a sheep, bunny and a dog named Charlie during the annual Farm Day visit by Upland Farms.

As one young student exclaimed: "This is the best day of my life," we think you will understand what he was talking about once you view our video.

DHS names SVL Students, Teacher of the Year

Each year, every high school in the Saginaw Valley League recognizes one teacher along with a male and female senior student athlete for the SVL all academic awards. Congratulations to Pam Ruggiero. outstanding SVL teacher of the year, and all-academic student athletes, Gracie Wright and Tanner McDunnah. The three were recognized Wednesday, April 23, at an awards luncheon at the Saginaw Horizon Event Center.

Gracie Wright

Gracie brings to all of her activities energy, enthusiasm, commitment and a drive to excel like no other. This is to be expected of any successful student, athlete and active citizen of the community. Gracie always seems to be looking for ways to better herself, her teammates, and help others within as well as outside the community. She has built great relationships around the school, excelling as a multi-sport student athlete, becoming a big part of the Davison girls' basketball and soccer teams' success over the past four years. Young people like Gracie do not normally command or demand attention but simply do what is right in class, on the playing field as a student athlete, and in the community, because it is engrained into their moral values - something her and her parents should be very proud of. Because of her dedication and resiliency, along with her positive attitude and great moral character, she has become an excellent model for all other students and athletes. Gracie has committed to be a student athlete, playing basketball at Mid-Michigan College. Gracie’s parents are Jessica and Mark Wright.

  • GPA: 3.6
  • Basketball: 3yr Varsity, 2yr Starter, SVL All League, Team Captain
  • Soccer: 2yr Varsity
  • Other: High Honor Roll, Homecoming Queen, Volunteer at youth basketball camps, Adopt a family during the holidays, works with students at elementary bldg. during intersession break, works volleyball games in the fall

Tanner McDunnah

Tanner is a fine example of great sportsmanship, leadership, and citizenship. He has been a hardworking, “nose to the grindstone” student athlete at Davison and truly has shown that hard work, dedication, and perseverance pays off. He has positively represented Davison within our wrestling program, as well as outside of it as a Davison athletic office co-op, all in a respectful and positive manner. Tanner’s path to greatness was a bit different from others due to an injury suffered from an accident he was in just before his 8th grade school year. This sidelined him from wrestling his freshmen and sophomore years due to a rod placed in his leg. Instead of four years of varsity wrestling, he had two, but made the most of it as a two-time All Stater. He has helped to set the bar extremely high for present and future student athletes in the Davison school district and the community, showing what it takes to be great, not just as an athlete but also as a teammate and student. He is everyone's favorite teammate because they know he would do anything to help make the team successful! Tanner’s parents are Andrea McDunnah and Will McDunnah.

  • GPA 3.9
  • Wrestling: 2yr varsity wrestler, 2x Individual All State, 2x Individual Runner Up to Championship, 2x Team State Final Qualifier (Team Runner Up- 2025), Team Captain
  • Other: High Honor Roll, Volunteer for youth leagues working with young athletes, very involved in serving at his local church (Grumlaw) in their kids ministry and young adult group, working to help people in need in his community.

Ms. Pam Ruggerio

Ms. Ruggerio has been a high performing teacher and the epitome of a professional at Davison High School since joining the school building four years ago. She completed her undergraduate degree at Madonna University, and has also done her master's coursework in Special Education-Learning Disabilities at Madonna. In all, Pam has taught for 19 years. Without a doubt, Ms. Ruggerio has a gift for teaching and building relationships with students. Pam teaches Environmental Science, but also has spent many years teaching chemistry and biology at all levels. Just as important as she is in the building as a teacher, her importance outside of the classroom is equally as great. The relationships she establishes with her students, as well as the time and energy she puts into all that she does, make her an MVP in the DHS building. Pam is a Co-Advisor for the Environmental Club and is the Michigan Green School Building Coordinator for Davison High School. She is also a new board member for the Grand Blanc Arts Council. In Pam’s free time, she loves walking/hiking trails with her dogs, gardening, attending art fairs, reading and hanging out with family, and is a self-proclaimed “Nature Nerd.” Pam is currently engaged to be married, has three dogs and many fish, and well known in her family as the “favorite Auntie.” Davison is very lucky to have her at the high school.
