Parent Teacher Conferences
Thank you to all our GES families who have already signed up for a fall conference.
Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3. There is no school for students on this day.
If you have not yet selected a time, please contact your child's teacher.
Conferences are an essential element of the home-school connection for many reasons.
Communication: Conferences facilitate open and effective communication between parents and teachers. This two-way dialogue allows parents to understand their child's progress, strengths, and areas for improvement, and will enable teachers to see their learners from other perspectives.
Student Support: Conferences enable parents and teachers to collaborate and provide support, interventions, and extensions to help students succeed.
Goal Setting: Parents and teachers can collaboratively set educational goals for the child. These goals can be specific and tailored to the child's needs, creating a roadmap for academic and personal development.
School Counseling Corner
This month we introduced one of my favorite books, βThe Grand Hotel of Feelings.β This book explores different types of feelings/emotions, what they may feel like, and the message that feelings are like visitors who come and go on their own time. Over the past few weeks, we have discussed feeling identification and coping skills related to the book. Each student has designed their own hotel, identified the feelings that visit them most often, and created a suitcase filled with coping skills or calming techniques to help them manage big feelings. These activities are all part of an activity book each student has been working from, and the booklet will be sent home next week. Kindergarten and first-grade students will bring home laminated copies of the hotels they drew with feeling characters that can velcro on; this is a great tool for tricky conversations about big feelings! Their classrooms have similar tools in the calm corner.
If you want to continue the conversation with your child, I encourage you to ask them what they put in their suitcase as a reminder of tools they can use when their feelings feel so big they feel out of control! They can also complete additional exercises, including one to practice gratitude.

Next Week's Special
Mrs. Parker will be back at GES for another week of PE/Wellness. Please help your child to remember to wear or bring their sneakers each day.
Late Fall/Early Winter Weather is Not Too Far Away
Our fall weather has been very mild, but wintery weather and bitterly cold temperatures are fast approaching.
As colder temperatures and wintry weather become the norm, I want to remind everyone that we go outside for recess when the temperature drops to 10 degrees Fahrenheit, with the wind chill factor included. We have used this temperature cut-off for many years. The importance of having children dress appropriately when they leave home, to be prepared for any weather event Mother Nature sends our way, cannot be overstated.
Since snow, ice, or extreme winds can arrive unexpectedly, children should be prepared to come to school each day with a hat, gloves or mittens, and a very warm coat. Students should also have winter boots and snow pants once there is snow on the ground.
If you would like assistance getting these items for your child, please contact our school counselor, school nurse, or principal.
