Message from Nicole Pease Principal
Library was our special this week and teacher Mary Donovan inspired the older students to consider what literary genre they would most enjoy.
We had outside fun as well with opportunities for students to snowshoe, and cross country ski.
There was also a showcase of the grades 3-5 turtle research and biography puppets. Lots of learning and sharing!
The most exciting part of the week is the Valentine's parties and sharing of kindness. I hope you have a lovely weekend and find many opportunities to show love to those that are important to you. Nicole
Grade 3/4/5 with Mrs. Garland and Mrs. Quinn
Happy Valentine’s Day from the 3/4/5 team! In Social and Emotional Learning, the classes concluded their study with Ms. Gregg on being good friends and standing up for others.
In Language Arts, the third graders read and analyzed free-verse poems, comparing them with rhyming poems. The students learned about alliteration, onomatopoeia, repetition, hyperbole, and tone. The students discussed vocabulary and poetic elements and wrote several original poems, including Haiku.
Across the hall, the 4th- and 5th-grade students continue to focus on history. Each grade will create a timeline of its grade-level content. 4th graders will focus on NH history & 5th graders on the Civil War. We will also work on idioms and vocabulary, and expand writing with adjectives, adverbs, and stronger word choices.
During Math, third graders are learning strategies for multiplying numbers up to 100, using the four operations to solve problems, and dividing larger numbers. The fourth graders are comparing, ordering, and rounding numbers up to 1,000,000. While the fifth graders are focusing on deeply understanding fractions.
In Science, the 4th- and 5th-graders completed and shared their turtle research projects. Learning with Mystery Science about weather is so fun in the third grade. The third graders finished knitting their hats!!
First and Second Grade with Heather Fletcher
February has been such a busy (and fun!) month in our classroom! The students wrote about what they would do if they were given $100, and their ideas were such a treat to read. One answer that really stood out was a student who said they would buy a Lamborghini, a mansion, and—of course—a butler to go with it!
We also tried a brand-new activity inspired by Clue. The students had to solve the mystery of who stole our pencil sharpener from a list of nine suspects. By working together to complete tasks and collect clues, they used the process of elimination to crack the case. They worked SO hard and had a blast solving the mystery!
In writing, we practiced Valentine’s Day contractions for our hallway display and learned about how Valentine’s Day began. To wrap up the month, our class created a big thank-you card for the Dublin Highway Department to show our appreciation for all their hard work during our winter snowstorms. Roger Trempe even came in to talk with us about how they keep the roads safe—wow, do they work hard!
One final highlight was a visit from Officer Dalterio, who taught us a new card game called Pyramid Solitaire. It has been a PERFECT way to practice adding to 13, and the students are getting really good at it!
Kindergarten with Deb Lang
Kindergarten was full of stories, numbers, and lots of love the past couple weeks! We explored Groundhog Day and learned how shadows are made, and we wrapped up the week by learning about post office community helpers. The children were thrilled to visit the post office to mail a special Valentine surprise for their families and to work on our “Love is…” project, sharing what love means to them.
We enjoyed the folktale The Mitten, retelling the story and talking about the characters as they squeezed inside. In math, we worked on "Friends of 10" facts (numbers that add up to 10) and began exploring teen numbers by building them as 10 and some extra ones. We also celebrated the 100th day of school by making necklaces with ten groups of ten and crowns that show skip counting by 10 all the way to 100— a BIG milestone! Check out our latest pics here.
Library with Mary Donovan
February is "I Love to Read!" month in school libraries across America. DCS K/1 readers are creating fancy placemats with drawings of things they love to read about. All readers have a chance to create a Book Valentine, telling one thing they love about a special character. We've all been enjoying familiar folktales and versions that are the same in some ways, and different in other ways. We've had interesting conversations about what we notice in the stories! Grades K/1 are making some very talented gingerbread cookies. Grades 2-5 have worked with partners using a Venn diagram to compare and contrast two stories, thinking about characters, setting, and plot events. Grade 3 was very lucky to hear a Goldilocks and the Three Bears story read in German by our friend Maya! Enjoy a good book together!
Note from Robin Gregg, School Counselor
Students in Third, Fourth and Fifth grade just finished four weeks of classroom counseling lessons focused on bullying prevention. They reviewed "The 3 R's" : Recognizing, Reporting and Refusing Bullying and viewed developmentally appropriate short videos illustrating bullying scenarios in which children recognized that bullying was happening, reported this to school staff members, and used assertiveness to become active bystanders/"upstanders." The students each practiced reporting and refusing bullying.
In coming weeks at DCS, students in Second and First grade and in Kindergarten will also learn about bullying prevention. Our district's school counselors use a research-based bullying prevention curriculum from The Committee for Children/Second Step, based in Seattle, Washington. https://www.secondstep.org/bullying-prevention.
