Flushing HS Library Annual Report

Ms. E. Bayer and Miss Nixon, Librarians June 2019

Flushing HS LibraryAnnual Report Ms. E. Bayer and Miss Nixon, Librarians June 2019

Overview

Flushing High School had a very successful year. We continue to partner with My Library NYC and strengthened the collaboration between the public library and our school library. Michael Clark, the MyLibrary NYC Coordinator, has visited our campus and supplied us with a generous supply of pencils, reading lists and posters. Amber Loveless, the teen librarian from the Queensboro Hill branch of the QPL, participated in our Books with Bite Club and shared some of her favorite books with our students. The Office of School Library Services continued to fund our Entrepreneurship Collection and awarded us a Reading in Action Grant to support teen activism. Our library saw a 20% increase in circulation, over 325 classes conducted research, and we hosted the Forensics Fair and various college fairs for our students. Miss Nixon and Ms. Bayer kept a busy schedule of hosting open access days, student directed research projects and helping students and teachers with their college searches, research needs and job search assistance.

Forensic Science Fair Returns to FHS Library

Once again, our students were enthralled by the investigative uses of forensic research to solve some of the most heinous crimes. Ms. Bod's forensic students displayed their research projects and answered questions by fellow students.

Our Entrepreneurship Collection has Found a New Location!

We relocated our Entrepreneurship Collection to a student centered spot in our library. Students can easily browse the collection in the new spot. More books are placed with their "covers facing front" to display the titles and encourage teens to pick up a book on the spot. We often find the books in other spots, a sure sign showing that someone was interested and reading.

Grants and Special Recognition Grants and Special Recognition

NYC Reads 365 Grant, CCD Grant for Entrepreneurship Collection, Reading in Action Teen Activism Grant, continuation of Tower Garden grant awarded in 2018, Donor's Choose Grant just awarded for 2019-2020 school year.
