Osgood Literacy Curricula
Did you know that teachers at Osgood implement four programs for a complete literacy experience for all students? Learning to read is complex. The image above demonstrates the many pieces of the puzzle that must be addressed to support children in learning to read. Each program our teachers implement plays a role in supporting early readers.
Lively Letters- Preschool
- Multi-sensory reading program that turns plain, abstract letters and sounds into lively characters
- Letters are embedded into colorful pictures that show students what to do with their mouths when making the letter sounds
- There are stories and songs that help students learn the sounds each letter makes
Heggerty Phonemic Awareness (preschool-2nd)
Curriculum that teaches phonological and phonemic awareness skills and language awareness
Moves from focus on larger units of language starting with compound words words to syllables to onset-rime to individual phonemes/sounds in words
Hand motions to support auditory activities, including phonemic awareness skills:
rhyming, isolating the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words, blending sounds together, segmenting or breaking apart words into individual sounds, adding, deleting, or substituting sounds in words
Language awareness skills:
Repeating sentences, counting the number of words in sentences, and reciting nursery rhymes
Fundations Phonics (K-2nd)
Scope and sequences focuses on phonetic rules and patterns rather than memorizing lists of words
Provides consistent language used K-3
Uses the same concept for both spelling and reading
Maps out irregular words (trick) for reading and spelling
Practices fluency with phrases and passages connected to the concept
Word of the day focuses on words within a pattern but the multiple meanings of the word
Units of Study Reading Workshop (K-2nd)
Mini lessons have a focus on decoding skills, how readers think about books they read,
how readers choose a book to read, and how readers teach others about the books they read.
Kindergarten - Super Powers- Reading with Phonics and Sight Word Power. Readers use their super powers to slide through words, reread to bring books to life and use little words to read bigger words. They are practicing how to choose when to use each strategy.
First Grade - Learning about the World - Approaching books with curiosity and wonder to make sure they understand what they are reading and learning. Readers learn together and across a few books to learn more. Readers become teachers after they have read nonfiction.
Second Grade - Tackling Longer Words and Longer Books- Readers used strategies to break apart longer words and find ways to coach their partners with hard words. Readers make sure they understand the whole book when reading longer books and can recognize the important parts. Readers read smoothly with expression and pay attention to punctuation.
Please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Gaudette or our Reading Specialists if you would like more information on our programs. We will also be presenting at the May 7th School Committee meeting.

Reading Rovers
We will be partnering with the Cohasset Working Dog Foundation to pilot a Reading Rovers program that will be similar to the one at Deer Hill. When their class participates, students will have the opportunity to read to and interact with a therapy dog.
There will only be a couple of classes participating in the pilot. If your child's class is one of them, you will receive more information that includes an option to opt out if you prefer.
For more information on the Cohasset Working Dog Foundation, click the link below:

If we see benefits of this partnership, we will continue next school year and include all students.

The 7th Annual ‘Cohasset Earth Day Clean-Up’ date is Saturday, May 3, 2025 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Please join your Cohasset community in celebrating Earth Day 2025 by participating in the annual "Cohasset Earth Day Clean-up" beautification project!
Sponsored by the Open Space & Recreation Committee, Cohasset residents will rally to remove non-biodegradable, single-use trash and debris that crowd our parks, shorelines, and neighborhoods. To receive a cleaning assignment, please stop by the Cohasset Recreation Department between 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 3 at 100 Sohier Street.
The Open Space & Recreation Committee will help assign workers an area to clean. Trash bags and ‘pickers’ will be provided but please bring your own gloves. All trash collected will be deposited in an onsite dumpster. Thank you for your participation … it takes a village!
Tell a Friend!
Please spread the word about kindergarten registration. The sooner folks register, the more we can share about kindergarten orientation and plan for a successful 2025-26 school year.
Safe Snack List
Please pack your child's snack separate from their lunch.
Transportation
For information regarding school transportation, please visit the transportation page on the new CPS website. All students must be registered through transportation to ride the bus. However, buses are full at this time and they are placing students on wait lists.
