SMS 6TH GRADE VIKINGS TEAM TEST THEIR “SURVIVAL SKILLS” IN STONE AGE SIMULATION
Students on the sixth grade Vikings Team have been learning about early civilizations in a unique way. They have been challenged to see if they would be able to survive in prehistoric times, using “The Survival Simulation.” Students imagine themselves living in the Stone Age and needing to make decisions that increase their chance of survival, such as where will they live and what will they eat. Through different rounds of the simulation, students earn points based on their decisions, which is logged into a reflection journal.
Through this simulation, students are learning how favorable characteristics of geography led to growth of early civilizations and how different environmental and economic factors caused the movement of early people, products, and ideas in the Eastern Hemisphere.
SHS FINANCIAL LITERACY & ECONOMICS TEACHER MRS. TOLLIS SELECTED FOR NATIONAL CONFERENCE
Mrs. Tollis, Financial Literacy and Economics teacher at Strongsville High School, was recently selected by Jump$tart to represent SHS at their National Educators conference in Boston. Mrs. Tollis had the opportunity to network with over 200 teachers from 48 states and also meet two of her favorite financial experts (Tim Ranzetta and Yanely Espinal), while learning the latest in financial education and gaining many additional teaching resources to bring back to her classroom.
SURRARRER 3RD GRADERS VISIT POLARIS
Surrarrer 3rd Grade teachers (Mrs. Lewis, Mrs. Dunton, and Ms. Scarton) have been working to build real-world connections for students throughout each of their CKLA units. What originally began as an idea to bring Polaris students to Surrarrer to create interactive stations as a culmination of the 3rd graders recent unit on the human body, quickly grew into something even better. Polaris loved the concept, but suggested bringing our students to them - and it was an incredible experience.
Surrarrer 3rd graders rotated through five different labs: Nursing, EMT, Veterinary Science, Dental, and Exercise Science. Polaris students had the opportunity to lead and teach, while Surrarrer students were able to apply what they learned in meaningful, hands-on ways.
The 3rd graders listened to real animal heartbeats, flossed teeth on dental mannequins, completed agility testing, used medical tools to take vital signs, and so much more. This experience allowed them to see how their classroom learning connects to real professions and extends far beyond the walls of a classroom. It also created a powerful connection between career readiness and community collaboration.

SHS SOPHOMORE LUKE HUBER PLACES 14TH IN STATE MATH COMPETITION
Congratulations to SHS Sophomore Luke Huber! Luke placed 14th out of 110 top math students in the state at the recent Ohio High School Mathematics Invitational Olympiad (OHMIO) in Columbus. Luke was among the over 1,000 students across Ohio to qualify for the OHMIO competition. He is also currently tied for first place in the state for the Ohio Math League, which is a series of monthly high school competitions that Strongsville competes in both individually and as a team. Luke has also scored high enough on the AMC 10 national contest, qualifying him for the AIME contest in February. The AIME is a USA Math Olympiad qualifier exam.
MUSTANG SPOTLIGHT - MR. MIKE RODAK, SMS CAREER CONNECTIONS TEACHER
Mr. Mike Rodak is in his 28th year working at Strongsville City Schools, having taught at Center Middle School, Strongsville High School, and is now at Strongsville Middle School. Mr. Rodak is a Career Connections teacher at SMS, helping students build life skills and explore career possibilities. He earned his undergraduate degree from Baldwin Wallace University and his graduate degree from Kent State University.
“I am motivated every day to meeting the needs of every student in my classes. I was once told, ‘you can’t save them all,’ and always disagreed with that. As teachers, our job is to find a way to meet the needs of every student in our care - in some way. Success for one student may be earning an “A” in the class, while success for another may be gaining a little more self confidence, and for others it might be improving self discipline, interpersonal skills, public speaking, or their work ethic.”
“I’ve always been a social person and I love the camaraderie of the people I work with - problem solving to help the struggling student, challenging the over achiever, and getting a colleague’s perspective on what works for them. I enjoy constantly learning from my co-workers, the mastery of the wily veterans and the courage of the rookies. I’ve always enjoyed being part of a team and having people rely on my efforts for the group to succeed, the positive mindset to focus all energy on solving problems and recognizing the efforts of all involved. I feel that at SMS.”
“I have a special passion for service projects in the community. I love to get the students out of the classroom and apply what they’ve learned through authentic projects. It’s the best way to build confidence and teach them how rewarding it feels to do something for others. I also enjoy showing the community how great these kids can be, given the support and a platform to prove it. The students are different outside the walls of the school. They step up to challenges, overcome social fears, and surprise themselves with what they are capable of achieving. In turn they see me in a different light and show an appreciation for my efforts unlike anything I receive in the classroom. It’s the most rewarding part of my vocation and I want other teachers to take the chance on projects and feel the same satisfaction.”
Thank you Mr. Rodak for continually putting your students first and providing hands-on opportunities for them to develop important skills, which sets them up for future success! #ModelMustang
