HSE ROYALS
Promote Respect | Foster Pride | Inspire Excellence
THE WEEKLY ROAR 9/4/2026
There will be no school on Monday, September 7th, in observance of Labor Day.
Enjoy the long weekend, and we’ll see everyone back at school on Tuesday!
ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Please remind your student to bring their fully charged school-issued device to school every day. We have had quite a few students forgetting their chargers, which can make it difficult for them to participate fully in classroom activities.
STUDENT ID'S
Students are required to carry their physical student ID with them when they are on campus. In the past, we have allowed students to use their Skyward portal as a means of identification, but due to the new Indiana cell phone law we will not be able to continue that practice.
We appreciate your support 😊

L.I.O.N. PERIOD (FORMERLY PATHWAYS)
L.I.O.N. Period (Period 8)
For those of you who are new to HSE, our 8th period every other day is called our L.I.O.N. Period (formerly called Pathways). This period is a part of our school day and is considered academic time. Please see the attached document to learn what the acronym means.
During this time students have the ability to get help with academics, make up missing work, study, attend class meetings, etc. Having a common time building wide gives all teachers the ability to be available to schedule time with your student when it is needed. Our students are trained on how to request time to see a teacher.
It is important to note that this is NOT free time and an absence during the L.I.O.N. period does count on student absence totals. Based on a student's grade level and school standing, some grade levels may be able to have release time. Please see below to see what is available at each grade level. If a student qualifies for release time, parent permission is required before the student can leave.
12th Grade: In good standing (academics, discipline, and attendance) may have release time with parent permission both semesters. However, students are REQUIRED to stay for L.I.O.N. when requested by a staff member. Failure to stay as requested may result in loss of this privilege. Students with release are required to leave the building.
11th Grade: In good standing (academics, discipline, and attendance) can have release time with parent permission both semesters. However, students are REQUIRED to stay for L.I.O.N. when requested by a staff member. Failure to stay as requested may result in loss of this privilege. Students with release are required to leave the building.
10th Grade: No release available during the first semester. Release is possible in the second semester. Must be in good standing (academics, discipline, and attendance) may have release time with parent permission for second semester. However, students are REQUIRED to stay for L.I.O.N. when requested by a staff member. Failure to stay as requested may result in loss of this privilege. Students with release are required to leave the building. Students in grade 10 who lose this privilege will not be able to earn it back during the remainder of the year.
9th Grade: Not permitted to have any release time during L.I.O.N. period.
HSE BUILDING LEVEL PROCEDURE FOR ELECTRONIC DEVICES
- All devices will be powered off and stored in a backpack.
- All devices are forbidden from being accessed and powered on during the school day, as per Indiana law. Our school day is from 8:30 AM – 3:00 PM.
- Upon entering class students will gather their items needed for instruction and then place their backpack away from their desk at the direction of the teacher.
- Students are not permitted to gather their bag until bell rings to end the class.
- Students will not be permitted to take their backpack to lunch.
- Backpacks are not permitted to leave the room during class unless the student is leaving the building.
- Students are permitted to access their bag as permitted by the teacher to gather any items needed for instruction, but not personal electronic devices.
- Discipline will begin on the first infraction, and no warnings will be provided. Progressive discipline will be used and will be based on the number of prior infractions.
LUNCH UPDATES AND REMINDERS
We have modified our lunch schedule to no longer have an “A lunch period” which means we will run three (3) lunches instead of four (4). Our current cafe seating and serving lines provide enough seating and serving capacity to accommodate this change. This change will allow students to take their backpack to their classroom prior to lunch.
Backpacks are not permitted during lunch. Students who have alternate schedules or come to school late will be required to store their backpack in the bookstore during lunch.
ONLINE ATTENDANCE REPORTING VIA SKYWARD
Did you know that you can report a student's absence directly into Skyward and avoid the phone call? All parents are encouraged to use the Skyward Portal to report all day or partial day absences. By doing this you add a convivence factor for yourself, and it also helps the school focus on phone calls for immediate needs.
Important:
Any needed absence verification documents (ex. Doctors notes) will still need to be sent/given to the attendance office.
For immediate release from school for immediate needs please call the attendance office directly.
HOW TO REPORT ATTENDANCE IN SKYWARD FAMILY ACCESS
