Week Five Week Five

zoom_out_map

We have had an amazing first five weeks of school! We have completed our BOY iReady testing for ELA and Math. We will begin reviewing the data to assist your child with reaching their academic goals. Please talk to them about their classes and homework each day.

We all had a great week supporting the Sandy Hook Foundation's projects to encourage positivity and safe schools.

Friday we had our first ever Attendance Reward Friday! The number of students who had perfect attendance Mon-Thursday was AMAZING! If students attend school Monday through Thursday, on Friday, if awarded a lanyard and card, they do not have to wear a uniform on Fridays. We cannot teach the kids if they are not at school! This incentive seems successful.

Fall pictures will be taken on October 6th. This week we will be sending out more information.

The 2nd Annual Scholastic Book Fair will be Oct.2-6 in the VCMS Media Center.

As I repeatedly stated, we do not have time for misbehavior. Respect and kindness are expected from all, towards all. Those two things cover every discipline issue we experience. Bullying is not kind nor respectful, and it is not tolerated. Bullying includes; words, actions, social media, and confrontations. It is not accepted in any VCS building. Please remind your child to watch their words and behaviors. This week in our SEL time, we will focus on being kind and respectful. Both are free to give to everyone, all the time.

Weekly Attendance Incentive

What a great success! Look at the smile on these children's faces! In order to teach the kids, we need them in their seats every day! Encouraging this with a non-uniform day will help all students grow. Help us get them in school EVERYDAY!

Hispanic Heritage Month Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15th-October 15th is Hispanic Heritage Month and we will be celebrating our diversity at VCMS! We are so blessed to have many countries represented at VCMS. Every student has a love for their country and we are lucky enough to get the learn so much about the world. Ms. Mora does a tremendous job advocating for all of our students.

During this month we will continue to educate our school staff and students about Hispanic culture. This of course includes countries, food, culture, and languages.

VCMS Athletics VCMS Athletics

This has been a very busy week with athletic events at VCMS. We won our first Volleyball, Soccer, and Football games this season!

Football plays its first home game this week. Please check out our website for the athletic schedule for all sports.

Soccer is undefeated! Watching these young men play soccer is a true joy. Come out and watch them play!

Volleyball is going great as well. The ladies are learning to play as a team and are doing an amazing job! That first win was awesome!

Healthy Eating Healthy Eating

Smoothie Days are some of the happiest days! Ms. Holden recieved a grant for a smoothie machine and materials and our kids and staff get to enjoy smoothies once a month! Starting your day off with a healthy meal is proven to help increase academic achievement. The smiles on the faces of our kids is proof that these treats are appreciated!

VCMS Jag Executive Institute now Vance Institute

JEI has now become Vance Institute. Our idea has become the impetus for a county-wide program for middle school students. Of course, our students will still be involved, but now this experience is available to many more students. If your child is in the 8th grade, and they are interested, please have them speak to Ms. Holden during the school day.

The Vance County Economic Development Office assisted us in creating this program for VCS middle school students and we are excited about the expansion. We believe that exposure to careers, businesses, and area attractions will help students make lifelong decisions. We also believe that your perception becomes your reality, so we intend to increase our student's reality! Henderson and Vance County have a great deal to offer.

How We Do Business at VCMS

A very short list of academic, behavioral, and general expectations. Please note the cell phone policy.

Jaguars Hope Pantry

Our Hope Pantry is already in full force! We served 25 students and staff last week. During the week of teacher workdays, Gang Free and Ms. Elliott assisted our staff with food boxes. Food insecurity is an issue in Vance County. If you have a need, we can assist. Call the school at any time and leave a message for Ms. Elliott.

Discipline

The safety of our students and staff is of my utmost concern. There is no place for bad behavior at VCMS. Speak to your child and review the expectations that have been in place since August. Our goal is to have every child in class, learning, and reaching academic expectations. If they are unable to behave, consequences will be delivered.

We have great things to accomplish and we cannot become side tracked by the misbehavior of the few! This is told to the entire student body every day!

Bus Behavior

Good behavior is essential in the classroom, at school, and on the bus. Please remember that riding the bus is a privilege NOT a right! If a student fails to behave on the bus, you will have to find another way to get your child to school. Please talk to your child and reiterate the need for good behavior.
