LEXIA is up and Running
We are excited to announce that our new scheduling system is now aligned to LEXIA and our students are able to begin using the program. Students may start with a placement test which is great since learning has taken place since the last time they were on the program.
As a reminder, we ask that students work on this program independently. Teachers will be addressing areas they are struggling with and the program is also designed to support student learning. Please note that in the event LEXIA Levels do not match teacher reading levels and/or I-station levels, student levels may be adjusted to make sure they are in the proper instructional level.
We look forward to recognizing our Rattlers weekly for their Lexia Accomplishments.
STAAR Interim Assessments
This week students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade will be taking a State STAAR Interim Assessment. These assessments will provide us with Fall data to measure student growth as well as provide a road map of student gaps so that we can continue to address them during tutoring and Saturday Camps. Please ensure that students are on campus during their testing dates. Dates are found in our Week at a Glance section
Shook Hoodies on Sale Now
Stay warm this cold season in a Shook hoodie. Hoodies are on sale through the MySchoolBucks webstore for $35 each. Hoodies are performance material with screenprint of the Shook logo. Hoodies will only be available through this presale until Thursday, November 16.
Hoodies will be delivered to students during the week of December 4th.
Classroom Thanksgiving Baskets
We want to thank our community for helping us make a total of 65 baskets for us to donate to familes in our neighborhood and area organizations. Most classrooms have been able to put together full meals that include a turkey or a ham. We thank you in advance for helping us ensure everyone within our community is able to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday.
Birthday Celebrations
As a reminder, students are not able to bring in cupcakes or snacks to celebrate a birthday. We have a high number of students with the following medical conditions
- Food Allergies to gluten, peanuts, eggs, wheat
- Lactose intolerant
- Type I Diabetes.
In order to minimize their risk to exposing them to food items that may cause them physical harm, our campus does not accept any type of treat that will be consumed on campus. Please help us keep all of our students safe.Classroom teachers will make sure your child feels special that day by singing to them and may provide them with an item to distinguish that it is their birthday. You are welcome to send them to school with a birthday sash or button.
How is this different from allowable treat days and treat parties earned for incentives?
Allowable treat days and incentive days are planned days that allow parents to work along side educators and the campus to ensure their child is taken care of by offering alternatives and ensure they are not feel excluded. Thank you for your support.
Parent Involvement
Fall Dual Language Parent Meeting
As shared in our DL Contract, parents must attend a Fall and Spring Parent meeting. Post COVID, parent attendance has had to be tracked and submitted for parent support. Please make sure you are making time to attend this important meeting. If you are not able to attend this meeting, there will be a follow-up meeting in December. Please note that if y do not attend the fall meeting, you will be out of compliance for the Dual Language Program and run the risk of not being renewed for the upcoming school year. This meeting will fulfill the required Fall meeting attendance by parents. Students do not need to be in attendance.
Meeting will cover
- Student data
- Dual Language Updates
- Final opportunity for parents to sign DL Pledge for the 23-24 school year.
Please use the link below to submit any questions you may have.
November Coffee with the Principal
Join Mrs. Chavira on Wednesday, November 15 for our November Coffee with the Principal. This meeting will focus on upcoming events, answer any question submissions and address attendance laws. All parents who attend will earn their child a free dress pass.
For parents with students who currently have 8 or more absences, an email was regarding this meeting serving as a requirement for signing Attendance Contracts for possible LOC. Whether your child’s absences are excused or unexcused, the state of Texas requires schools to meet with parents once an absence threshold is met in order to develop a plan to improve a child’s attendance. This is a formal process we must complete as per the state. We appreciate your partnership in fulfilling this requirement as you will meet one-on-one in a quick meeting with one of our administrators to discuss your child’s attendance.
If you did not receive an attendance email about, please note this meeting is open to everyone and will cover a variety of topics on top of discussing attendance.

Skyward Parent Portal
The Socorro Independent School District is implementing Skyward Family Access for parents and students for the 2023-2024 school year. Skyward Family Access will replace the Tyler360 portal.
Skyward Family Access is an easy-to-use website that allows parents and guardians to access information about their students, such as attendance, grades, assignments, schedules, progress reports and report cards. Skyward Family Access is available on any device with an internet connection.
Skyward Family Access is now available to students and parents. Click here to learn more about how to use Skyward. Information also will be shared with parents via email.
SISD appreciates parents’ patience and understanding during the transition to Skyward Family Access.

Socorro ISD Referral for Gifted & Talented Services Announcement
Referrals for Socorro ISD GT services will be accepted beginning November 1, 2023. Any student in grades K-11 is eligible to be referred by a teacher, parent, or other community member. The process of identification includes the gathering of multiple criteria, both qualitative and quantitative, as required by the Texas Education Agency. A campus committee of at least three educators will review gathered data to make service recommendations.
The link for GT referrals that was sent out on October 23, was sent in error. If parents would like to refer their child, they must fill out the new form that is attached. The form can be translated to Spanish by clicking on the top highlighted corner.
Referrals may be entered at https://socorro.projectedu.net/home/CustomGTParentReferral or by scanning the QR code below.
All referrals must be entered by November 17, 2023. Referrals received after this date will not be accepted.
Parents of students who qualify for services will be notified by March 2024. If your student is already receiving GT services, they do not need to be referred again.
If you have questions or want more information about Socorro ISD’s GT services, visit our website, https://tinyurl.com/SocorroGT or contact your school’s GT campus coordinator Mrs. Cortez at jmunoz18@sisd.net

Safety Reminders
New Street on Paseo del Suerte
As you may have noticed, the administration supports traffic duty. We ask for your support and patience. Our goal is to keep students and families safe as well as to facilitate our drop-off and pick-up process.
Effective Monday, we will be implementing the following traffic safety protocols. Please note that we will be requesting the county to help us with signage.
- Due to the new street, we will no longer be able to park along Paseo de Suerte on any side. We are running a three-way street, please see the map below to see the traffic flow that supports our dismissal process.
- Anyone coming out of Lorenz street will have to turn right to drive away from the traffic congestion on Paseo de Suerte and Paseo del Este. See map.

Traffic
Student Safety and Community Safety is our priority. It takes a second for an accident to occur and for this reason, we need to make sure that we have a clear mind and are not rushed when we approach our campus.
General
- Remember to be courteous to all drivers.
- Please refrain from honking or cutting drivers off. We need to always be courteous to each other. We are part of the same community.
- We understand that we do not have enough parking for all parents. All schools struggle with parking. Please be aware of where you are driving and who is around you.
- Always use crosswalks or approach administration or support personnel to cross you. We are our children's roll models. Would you like your child to think it is safe to cross anywhere down a street?
Car Drop-Off Etiquette
Car drop-off must be used by students that are independent enough to exit their vehicles with their backpacks on. Support your parent community by doing the following.
- Always remain in your vehicle. *If you need to exit your vehicle to help your child, then your option should be to park and walk your child.
- Always park at the top of the lane, first sign. Please do not stop at the door walkway. This limits the number of kids that can exit the vehicle.
- Make sure students are ready to exit the vehicle. If your child requires much assistance from you, please park as you are encouraged to not exit your vehicle.
Car-pick-up Etiquette
- Always display on your DASHBOARD your YELLOW car sign. If you do not have a car sign, please park to pick up your child.
- Do not exit your vehicle. Always remain in your vehicle. We will bring your child to you.
- Never park in our pick-up area
- Do not utilize the exterior or 2nd lane to have kids run to you OR pass the vehicles before you.
In the event you feel a driver or parent is impacting student, please do not engage. Notify administration. We will do the following.
- The administration will contact the parent and advise them of proper procedures
- Second or severe offense: Vehicle information will be given to police service.
Thank you, Rattler Community, for your support. Let us make sure we keep our Rattlers safe.

HB114 Update
Effective on Sept.1st, 2023 it is now in law that a student may be either removed from class and placed in a disciplinary alternative education program, or expelled from a school for the possession, use, or delivery of marihuana or e-cigarettes on or near a public school property or at certain school events. You will notice posters posted around our campus. Please make sure you talk to children and make sure you secure any personal vaping items so that students do have access to them.
Campus and Student Threats are no Joke
Please take the time to talk to your children regarding the consequences that can come from making threats to an individual or campus or through social media. Socorro ISD and Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary, take all campus or student threats very seriously. Incidents that involve students making threats to other students, adults, and/or the school will be handled using the SISD Student Code of Conduct and if necessary may lead to an investigation by our campus SRO.
Please talk to your child about the consequences that come with making threats to others. We appreciate your support.
Arriving on time
Systems are working and this week we will begin to work on arriving on time. Students' tardiness will go into effect soon. Note the following
- Doors and Gates will open at 7:00 am
- First Bell will ring at 7:30 am
- MUSIC will play over the intercom at 7:40 for the last 5 minutes before the tardy bell.
- Tardy Bell will ring at 7:45
- Breakfast in the classroom will be served from 7:30-7:45 am
- Instruction will start promptly at 7:45
Thank you, parents, for not blocking our walkways and stopping at the endpoints. This helps us have a visual of the students coming in and support any students that need guidance.
