A Message From Principal Cort Haynes
MSMS Parents and Families:
It has been a wonderful start to our school year! We sincerely hope that your child is finding his/her groove and settling into middle school life. Communication is key, and we hope to provide clear and efficient information via our weekly Huddles and monthly Newsletters.
The fall FastBridge window is open, and we have already begun completing our aMath and aReading assessments. These screeners allow us to track academic data for each student so that we may provide appropriate support to ensure academic growth during the school year. We will test during the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Fall scores will be shared during our Parent/Teacher conferences on October 14th and 15th. Conferences will be conducted in a come-and-go format, hosted in our Commons area on both days.
One of our goals is to increase student agency and accountability. By having students share weekly progress reports via email with their parents/guardians, we intend to increase ownership of their Grades, Attendance, and Behavior (GAB). G.A.B. sheets are completed by students and may contain errors. Please consistently check Skyward to monitor your child’s attendance, behavior, and academic progress. Reach out to your child’s teacher(s) or contact our front office if you need any assistance with the Skyward platform.
Here are a few reminders that we would like to share with you:
IDs/Lanyards - Must be worn at all times. There is a $3 fee for each if misplaced. These will be applied to “fees” in the Skyward system. Cash is also accepted. No refunds.
Dress Code - Please review the dress code policy as outlined in the Student Handbook. We addressed expectations with our students during our first week of school.
Extracurricular Activities Attendance - You represent the name on the front and back of your jersey. Students are encouraged to attend middle and high school-related activities. Behavior must be appropriate during these events. Students who are unable to conduct themselves accordingly may lose the privilege to attend any USD 266 event.
Clubs/Activities - Kansas Association of Youth (KAY) Club is a philanthropic group geared toward local charity work. Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Club is a school-centered group to encourage good decision-making and boost morale. Student Council (student-elected positions) elections are currently underway. These activities are available for students to join and/or be elected to. Passion Projects (student choice) will begin in October for Term 2. Chess, Rubik’s Cube, Coding, Art, Culinary, Technology, and other activities will take place each Friday.
Attendance - Please be sure to contact the office if your child needs to be absent. District policy allows for seven (7) excused absences for the year. Medical appointments are excluded (a note must be provided).
Please follow us on our social media pages on Facebook (Maize South Middle School) and Instagram (@msmsmavnews). Thank you for being in the huddle with us this year and doing your part. Gov Mavs!
Mr. Hamilton's Sports Spot
Fall sports are in full swing at Maize South Middle School! A huge shoutout to our student-athletes and coaches for navigating the unpredictable Kansas heat throughout the season. From morning and evening practices to moving indoors, they’ve shown tremendous flexibility, commitment, and perseverance.
Now it’s time to come out and support your Mavs! We encourage all of our families to get out to a game or activity and cheer on our student-athletes and coaches as they showcase all of their hard work.
Schedules for all Maize South Middle School sports and activities can be found on Bound (click button below).
We hope to see you there—Go Mavs!
Nurse's Notes
Hello Maize South Middle Families!!
We are so happy to see our students back! Just a few reminders as we settle in for the year:
1) If your student needs medication during the day, a Medication Administration Form MUST be on file in the Health Office. Prescription medication requires a physician signature and an OTC medication requires a parent signature. Students are NOT allowed to carry any medication on them unless it is an Emergency Medication that we have a Dr order for. If your student carries an inhaler- we MUST have a Dr order on file in the Health Office!
2) ALL incoming 7th graders require a Tdap booster and a Meningococcal ACWY vaccine. If you have not sent documentation of that to me, please do so as soon as possible! We are starting to email and/or call parents (as a friendly reminder) that we are missing documentation of these immunizations. The district cut off date for compliance for these immunizations is October 1, 2026. Students that are not compliant on that date may be excluded from school.
3) We are here to help your students have a great year! If there is a health need we can assist with, please reach out.
Brie Epke, BSN RN
Counselors Corner
Meet Your Counselors!
We have two school counselors at Maize South Middle School, and they are excited to help your students with academic and social emotional learning this year! See below.
Did you know? Government assistance does not cover basic hygiene items such as soap, toilet paper, toothpaste, shampoo, feminine hygiene, or laundry detergent. Maize schools partner with Simply Hygiene and have products available from your counselor or nurse. Please see below for more information.
Maslow’s Pantry
Maslow’s Pantry is a student-run community resource in the Maize Unified School District (USD 266) that provides food, clothing, hygiene products, and support to local students and families. Families may submit requests for food and/or clothing at any time during the school year by filling out the Google Form in the attached flyer.
Coming Soon!
Reality U is part of the Pando Initiative. This financial literacy simulation program helps students understand the importance of their education today and how it will impact their financial future. Our 8th grade students will spend the entire school day on October 20th going through the Reality U simulation here at MSMS, as well as attend breakout sessions presented by community stakeholders in a variety of areas such as financial literacy, high school opportunities, vehicle maintenance, internet safety, etc. If you are interested in being a Reality U volunteer OR helping us fund this invaluable experience, please email Adam Melichar at amelichar@usd266.com. Please use “Reality U” as the subject line.
Mav Time
We are very excited about Mav Time again this year! We will continue to focus on our six character traits through SEL lessons on the first Wednesday of each month.
Mondays: Students will complete GAB (Grades, Attendance, Behavior) sheet and email a copy to parents/guardians.
Tuesdays and Thursdays: Students will focus on homework and have an opportunity to seek out additional academic support.
Wednesday: Silent reading
Fridays: Students will engage in team building activities with their Mav Time. They will also have an opportunity to join an activity of their choice during Term 2 and Term 3.
National Suicide Prevention Month
September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Suicide is a leading cause of death for youth but can be prevented. Suicide can be a difficult topic to discuss but is important to address in order to remove the stigma surrounding mental health.
Knowledge is power! Please review the following links that include additional information, tips, and resources. Talking about suicide provides an opportunity for others to share and does not encourage additional suicidal ideation.
Suicide and Crisis Lifeline
“In 2020, Congress designated the new 988 dialing code to operate through the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.” Last year, 988 went live and offers an easy to remember number for those experiencing a crisis. You can read more by clicking the button below. You can also use the free, 24/7 click button below.
Steffanie Moore (works with students whose last name begins with A-K) is beginning her 14th year as a school counselor at MSMS. Prior to this, she taught ELA at Maize Middle School for six years. She grew up attending school in the Maize School District and is excited to be part of it as a staff member. Her favorite thing about being a counselor is interacting with students and the bright energy they bring to a school building.
Adam Melichar (works with students whose last name begins with L-Z) is beginning his 1st year as a school counselor at MSMS. Prior to this, he was a teacher and assistant principal at Complete High School Maize for three years, a school counselor at MSHS for 10 years, and a teacher in the Andover district for five years. Adam has two kiddos in the district and is proud to be a member of the MSMS family.
Message from PTO
MSMS Families,
Thank you for all your contributions for our Back to School breakfast for staff! They were treated with Jason's deli sandwiches, yogurt, fruit, and coffee. Also thanks to Ziggi's Coffee for matching our contribution so that each staff received a $10 gift card.
We will start selling Texas Roadhouse rolls (with butter) after Labor Day. Please follow our Facebook page and the weekly newsletter for information as it comes out.
We purchased extra spirit wear from All Seasons Custom Apparel that we will be selling at some sporting events in the near future. Our Facebook page will provide information on that as well.
The last fundraiser to mention will be wrapping up at midnight on September 7th. The PTO has built three raffle baskets of KU & Mavs gear. $3 per ticket gives you a chance at winning one of these. Click button below to purchase tickets.
Our next restaurant spirit night will be at Chick-Fil-A on September 10th from 3-10 pm.
Again thank you for supporting our fundraisers so that we can raise funds to provide requests for our teachers, items for our school, and extra events. We appreciate you Mavs family!
