SVMS Newsletter
September 22nd, 2026

September 25th, 2026
Happy Friday!
We want our newsletter to be a helpful resource for families, not just another email in your inbox! Middle school is such an important time of growth and development, and each week we’ll share ideas, resources, and information to support your student academically, socially, and emotionally. We also want to give you a glimpse into what’s happening around campus so we can celebrate the great things our students and staff are doing together. Our goal is to partner with you, keep you connected to SVMS, and help your student feel supported, connected, and successful.

Words to Carry as a Parent
Boys and Friendships
Your son will meet other boys who include him, pressure him, mock him and dare him to prove himself, teach him these 7 friendship rules early:
- Real friends don't make you earn your place: If you constantly have to prove you're cool, tough, funny, or fearless.. that's not friendship. The right friends let you be yourself.
- Never do something dangerous to impress: Walking away takes more courage than giving in.
- Don't laugh at someone just to fit in: The group might laugh. Everyone might join in. But if someone is being humiliated, he doesn't have to participate. Kindness is not weakness.
- Choose friends who make you better: Friends influence what feels normal. How you speak. How you spend your time. What you tolerate. Stay close to people whose habits you respect.
- Learn to say "no" without explaining yourself: "No" "I don't want to." "I'm not doing that." That's enough.
- Be the friend you wish to have: Keep your word. Show up. Tell the truth. Protect your friend's dignity. Celebrate their wins. And never use their weaknesses against them. Character matters more than popularity.
- If a friendship requires you to become someone you're not, walk away: The goal isn't to have the biggest group. It's to have a few people you can trust when life gets hard.

NEW - SVMS Spirit Squad
Introducing the SVMS Spirit Squad!
We’re excited to launch the SVMS Spirit Squad as a new 2026–27 pilot program! The squad will build school spirit, teamwork, belonging, and fun while cheering on our Dolphins at home athletic events.
The co-ed squad is open to all students, with no cuts, and will support boys’ basketball and girls’ soccer during the second athletic season. Students will learn cheers, chants, dance, and routines in a fun, non-competitive environment.
Tryouts are Tuesday, October 13, after school! We can’t wait to see our Dolphins bring the spirit!
For more information, please email Ms. Danner at cdanner@scottsvalleyusd.org
Bike Safety
SVPD recently presented bike and e-bike safety to all grade levels. This is the first step in our effort to support students and families with street safety education. Additional e-bike training, including a parent and student safety pledge, registration, and campus parking permit, is coming soon.
Yearbook Cover Contest
Calling all SVMS artists! Students in grades 6–8 are invited to design this year’s 2026–27 yearbook cover. The theme is Amusement Park/Arcade, and the winning artwork will be featured on the front or back cover!
Entries may be individual or group submissions (up to 5 students). No AI art. Artwork is due to the front office by December 4, 2026.
Questions? Contact Ms. Harte in Room 12.
SVMS Hope Squad
Our first Hope Squad meeting of the year is underway! 💚 Hope Squad is a student-led group dedicated to building connection, belonging, and hope at SVMS. Squad members are trained to recognize when peers may be struggling, offer support, and connect students with trusted adults and resources.
