🦋Hello Everyone!🦋
HAPPY OCTOBER!
We are off to a great start as we transition into our Indigenous Voice projects this October. We are looking at how ancient traditions are adapted and transformed throughout the multiple histories of the Americas. Our lens is one of respect and honor to the Native voices and experiences that have often be suppressed, assimilated, activated, fought for and reclaimed as we look at oral histories, true text, and the art and activism of Indigenous North America---Mexico, USA & Canada.
We will look at how artists are transformative workers in their communities. We will look at Chicago's history as Native Land, a sanctuary for those voices that have been marginalized and how our cultural heritage of being a Welcoming City has evolved over the years.
We are celebrating the courage, stamina, love and community found in folk art traditions and our common history of "passing it on." Our main intention will be to share that we are STRONGER TOGETHER and that we are transformative beings---each and every day.
To that end, we are looking at Mesoamerican Aztec, Maya, Huichol and Puebla traditions in addition to the Newberry Library's exhibition of Native Chicago stories and the oral histories of our Waters' youth today.
We will also be looking at the inspiring Hawaiian stories of perseverance and tradition at the Field Museum----brought to you by our own Waters' family----Kamae, Hinano and Lani! Take a family fieldtrip to experience their work there or at https://mitchellmuseum.org/alohacenterchicago/! It is transformative!
Today Lani, Hinano and Kamae are teaching the world at the Field Museum: Ten years ago they brought their hula and oral history exclusively to Waters at our visual art exhibit----Remember that:))? Thank you Waters' families for your continuous support and passion for arts education.

ALL STUDENT Wavemaker Art Clubs will begin on THURSDAYS in OCTOBER:)! Our Girl Scout club and Wavemakers will be participating as one this year so we have more time together:)! EACH SESSION WILL BE 3PM-5PM THIS YEAR:))!
