Important Update: Snow Routes and Winter Weather Plans Important Update: Snow Routes and Winter Weather Plans

To reduce the number of snow days—particularly consecutive—Oak Grove R-VI School District is implementing snow routes this school year. These snow routes primarily apply to rural gravel roads in Lafayette County, with alternative pick-up points identified on asphalt for families in affected areas.

Families impacted by the snow route pick-up changes should have received a detailed communication from our Transportation Department (The Bus Barn). Additionally, when snow routes are used, the district will notify all families to confirm that the school will be in session under these adjusted plans.

While there will still be times when regular snow days are necessary, we hope snow routes and late starts will allow us to navigate Missouri's winter weather challenges better. For more details about our late start program, please review this document: Oak Grove R-VI Late Start Plan We've also attached an infographic with winter weather updates and safety guidelines to help keep your family informed and prepared.

Winter Weather Updates & Safety Guidelines

As we approach the winter weather season, please keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Stay informed by checking our website and social media for weather updates and school closures.
  • Ensure your contact information is up-to-date in our system to receive notifications.
  • Dress appropriately for the cold and watch out for icy conditions during drop-off and pick-up.

Stay Warm and Safe This Winter! Stay Warm and Safe This Winter!

As temperatures drop, it’s important for students to bundle up before heading to school. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather with coats, hats, gloves, and scarves. Layers are key for staying warm during outdoor activities or waiting for the bus. Together, we can keep everyone comfortable and ready to learn!

Attendance Matters!

Did you know that regular school attendance is one of the most important factors in your child’s academic success? Missing even a few days can add up quickly and impact your child's learning. Help your child succeed by:

  • Setting a regular bedtime and morning routine.
  • Preparing school items the night before to avoid morning rush.
  • Scheduling appointments and vacations outside of school hours whenever possible.

Every day in class builds on the previous one, so consistent attendance helps your child stay on track academically and socially. Let’s work together to ensure every day counts!

Welcome Back - OGHS

After an eventful 1st semester, highlighted by the first softball state championship, I hope students are primed for an outstanding 2nd semester as well. Numerous opportunities await them in academics, activities, and athletics, including academic letter awards, district and state competitions, and the next OGHS Academic Hall of Fame class and Panther of the Year.

While seniors prepare for graduation and their future beyond OGHS, the underclassmen will begin the 2025-26 course registration process soon. New offerings include a vocational agriculture program and a STEM program. Parents and students can learn about these programs and ask questions about all other departments at the annual Curriculum Night Monday, February 3, 6:00-8:00 PM. The counseling office will host a FAFSA Frenzy that same night for any senior planning to attend higher education next year.

As the school year progresses, I encourage active communication from teachers to students and parents and vice versa, and if you ever need Mr. Newman or me, please contact us via email, phone, or personal meeting. We want to help if students need assistance. I also encourage you to visit the HS website: https://oakgrove-oghs.ss10.sharpschool.com/ and review all the important information links and stay updated with the activities calendar: https://sites.google.com/ogr6.org/oak-grove-athletics-activities/home.

Again, I welcome everyone to 2nd semester and look forward to student achievements and milestones. In the immortal words of Wall of Fame coach and Mr. Oak Grove George Pirch, Go Panthers!

Transparency and Accountability: A Look into Oak Grove R-VI School District’s Annual Audit

On October 16, 2024, Brad Steele from Westbrook & Co., a certified public accountant, presented the annual audit of Oak Grove R-VI School District's financial statements to the Board of Education. Covering the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024, the audit adhered to professional standards under generally accepted auditing principles, Government Auditing Standards, and the Uniform Guidance.

The audit highlighted several key findings that reflect the district's commitment to transparent financial management while also providing actionable recommendations for improvement:

  • Compliance and Controls: Most transactions complied with accounting standards, but areas like purchase order timelines and payroll deductions require tighter controls.
  • Budget Monitoring: Recommendations were made to avoid deficit balances in fund budgets, ensuring future financial stability.
  • Policy Adherence: Suggestions to improve documentation and authorization for large purchases align with board policy requirements.
  • Risk Mitigation: Uninsured deposits and transportation overhead allocations were flagged, leading to recommendations to enhance financial security and increase state reimbursements.

The audit revealed no significant disagreements with management and praised the district for promptly addressing identified misstatements. Superintendent reimbursements, collateralization monitoring, and bid documentation were areas of focus for improvement.

The district's proactive approach to implementing these recommendations reflects its dedication to sound financial practices, ensuring every dollar contributes to the success of Oak Grove R-VI students and programs.

Water for South Sudan Fundraiser

Over 5 million people in South Sudan do not have access to clean, drinkable water and basic sanitation services. Most children, often girls, walk 3.7 miles every day to fetch water for their families, but we have the opportunity to change that.

Ms. Agness' 8th grade ELA students had the privilege of learning Salva Dut's powerful story and how he came to start the non-profit organization, Water for South Sudan.

Water for South Sudan has drilled 634 wells (and counting)! Every well gives clean water access to a village of 500-1,000 people, and every $100 raised gives clean water access to an average of 5 people.

Schools that raise more than $1,000 are entered to win one of seven prizes, including an in-person visit from Salva Dut!

100% of donations will go directly to Water for South Sudan to help save lives. You may give online here or donate in person (Oak Grove Middle School or directly to Ms. Agness in room 802).
