Brentwood Bulletin
October 11, 2026
Dear Brentwood Middle School Families,
I hope this newsletter finds you well and enjoying the lovely fall weather.
I know this past week has been a stressful one, with the news of the three scenarios for Rightsizing released and discussed at Tuesday's school board meeting. Two of these scenarios include some school closures that will result in the reconfiguration of feeder patterns for Brentwood Middle School. Currently, Whitman ES, Woodmere ES, Kelly ES, and Woodstock ES are our primary feeder schools. Below is a summary of the changes proposed:
- Woodmere Elementary School closes in both scenarios A and B.
- Sellwood Middle School closes in both scenarios A and B - students will move to Brentwood for the 2028-29 school year.
- Lewis Elementary School closes in scenario A.
- Kelly Elementary remains open, but only the students in the Russian Immersion program would attend Brentwood; the remaining students will feed into Harrison Park.
- With the closure of Sellwood Middle School, students from Duniway Elementary School and Lewis Elementary School (in scenario B) would attend Brentwood.
- Whitman ES (with Woodmere students post-closure) and Woodstock ES would continue to feed into Brentwood.
- Our students would continue to feed into both Franklin High School and Cleveland High School.
- Overall Summary of Regional Changes - Franklin/Cleveland
The third scenario is the status quo scenario, where nothing changes.
I'm working with our PTA and central office leadership to schedule opportunities for our community to come together, ask questions, voice concerns, and determine our path forward together. I will share those dates as soon as they are finalized. In the meantime, please take a look at the community engagement calendar for ways you can engage now:
Rightsizing Community Engagement Event Calendar: View district-wide listening sessions, town halls, and engagement opportunities.
How will your school be impacted: Take a look at the scenarios by school to look closer at enrollment and program projections.
Informative Rightsizing Videos: Watch detailed video presentations explaining the background, goals, and timeline of the rightsizing proposal.
Adult_Infographic_Explain_Respond_Follow_Through.png: Access guidance and strategies for supporting children and adults through major school transitions.
I know I shared a lot of links in this message, and you likely have more questions than I have answers. In the coming weeks, as discussions unfold and more information becomes available, I remain committed to keeping you informed. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns - I may not have answers, but I will gladly work to find them on your behalf.
Warmly,
Rosemarie El Youssef

WEB Leadership UPDATE
On Thursday our WEB Leaders hosted 6th graders in the gym for a check-in. They got into small circles and spent time with groups of 6th graders to learn how things are going so far and offer support.
WEB Leaders are mentors to the 6th graders, often helping them with lockers, walking them to class when they feel overwhelmed, or sitting with them at lunch when they need support. We are so proud of this group of WEB Leaders and grateful for all they do for our community!
SPIRIT WEEK - Coming Soon!
Our WEB Leaders are putting the finishing touches on a plan for spirit week the final week of the quarter. We are so excited!
Brentwood Middle School is an inclusive community, and as such we do not "celebrate" Halloween. However, some of our students have been asking about wearing their costumes to school. While we plan spirit week activities for the week as a way to include all of our students in a community building activity, it is important to remember that not everyone engages in Halloween themed activities, and all students must follow dress code and make choices that keep our community feeling safe for all.
Even when participating in spirit days we are still obligated to uphold the dress code. Students may not wear anything that...
- shows or promotes alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, or drugs.
- depicts nudity, sexual content, or vulgar/inappropriate language.
- depicts hat speech or images that target groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, or other protected groups.
- is considered to be gang-related (clothing or symbols).
- includes profanity.
- threatens the health/safety of others.
Students may not paint or cover their faces in a way that makes them unrecognizable, and they should not bring props to school that resemble look-alike weapons, as that is also against our PPS policies.
Let's keep our spirit week fun for all!

SUN UPDATES
Hello BMS SUN Families!
WEEKLY PROGRAM UPDATES:
What a great first week! Thank you all for your patience with the bus and scheduling! Please continue to email us and let us know of any concerns.
Secondly, if your child is using the SUN Activity Bus, we have asked the bus driver to come earlier, but they are getting stuck in traffic on 82nd. The bus has been picking up our students after 5:45pm, so please be patient as they are trying to get to us on time. He is also very strict on the rule of eating on the bus and sitting in their chair. Please help him out by making sure that your child is riding the bus safely.
Lastly, VOLLEYBALL CLUB has a field trip on Tuesday 10/13! IF YOUR CHILD IS ON THE TEAM, PLEASE MAKE SURE THEY GET THE FORMS BACK TOMORROW!!!!
If you are receiving this email, that means your child has been accepted into one of our after school classes for the Fall Term! If your child has decided not to attend after school classes or we have the wrong contact information, please email me back so I can remove you off this list. If your schedule says waitlist, please be patient as some classes are full. We will let you know if a space becomes available.
Here are a few REMINDERS for afterschool programming:
1. If your child has a SUN class, they are expected to be in the cafeteria right after the bell rings. Any student who leaves the building will not be allowed to attend SUN for that day. UNLESS, there was an excused absence and the parent/guardian notified SUN Staff. STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GO TO DAIRY QUEEN OR SAWYERS BEFORE SUN STARTS.
2. Pick up time for SUN is 5:30pm.
3. Transportation check! Please look at your email for your child’s SUN schedule. In that email, I listed the transportation allowed for your child. PLEASE MAKE SURE STUDENTS AND ADULTS ARE ON THE SAME PAGE ABOUT THEIR TRANSPORTATION. Once students are released from SUN at 5:30pm, they are expected to know what the plan is whether they are walking home, catching the SUN activity BUS, or an adult is picking them up at the front of the school.
4. After School attendance is important. 3 unexcused absences will result in dropping your child from the class. Please communicate with SUN Staff when your child is home sick or will need to miss SUN for the day.
5. NEW: AT THE END OF FALL TERM, THE TOP 14 STUDENTS WITH THE BEST ATTENDANCE WILL BE INVITED THE A ROLLER RINK FIELD TRIP AT MT. SCOTT COMMUNITY CENTER!
Thank you all for reading through everything! See you all tomorrow!
Sincerely,
SUN Staff
PLEASE REVIEW WITH YOUR CHILD BMS SUN’s Expectations for Students and Families
Brentwood SUN is here to provide fun enrichment programs that are inclusive for all, while maintaining the safety for those who are participating. Therefore we have created some Brentwood SUN Expectations that all Students will need to follow.
Positive and Appropriate Language Use at all times.
Cell Phone Policy Use: Cell Phones are to be used before SUN programs, Breakfast/Lunch, and after SUN programs. Cell phones will remain on Silent during the SUN Program. Families are encouraged to contact the SUN Site Manager Chelsea Kimura 971-917-6285 or the SUN Site Assistant Will Grebner 503-896-1473 for emergencies during the SUN working hours.
Attendance Policy: If you need to leave the program early, you MUST have a parent/guardian permission & check out with a SUN staff before leaving. Students are to sign in and out with specific times of coming in and leaving the Brentwood SUN Program. This helps us to keep track of students and to let families know when students are leaving the program. If you are concerned about your student’s attendance, please email the Brentwood SUN site manager Chelsea Kimura (Chelsea.kimura@portlandoregon.gov). WE DO NOT NOTIFY FAMILIES IF STUDENTS SKIP SUN. SO PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU NEED US TO REPORT YOUR CHILD'S ATTENDANCE.
ZERO tolerance for bullying. Respect instructors and peers at all times to help maintain our SUN space to be inclusive and safe for all.

If you prefer to donate by check, please make checks out to Lane MS PTA (we’re still in transition to our new name.) Checks can be mailed directly to the school or dropped off at the front office.
Support the Brentwood Middle School student store
.
Help stock our student store!
At Brentwood Middle School, our reward system celebrates students who take initiative and live out our core values of being accountable, safe, and kind.
When students demonstrate responsibility for their learning and actions, make choices that contribute to a safe and respectful environment, or go out of their way to show kindness to others, they earn “keys” as recognition for their positive impact.
These keys serve as both encouragement and a tangible reminder that their actions matter. Students can save and spend their keys at our student store, choosing from a variety of fun and motivating items.
♻️ BOTTLEDROP — An easy way to give back!
x
Fill a blue bag with our school’s QR sticker with your bottles and cans and return them to a BottleDrop redemption site (available at most grocery stores and BottleDrop locations). Funds are donated directly to Brentwood PTA which go right back to our school!
Need a blue bag? Blue bags are available in the school office, at PTA events, and by emailing board@brentwood-pta.org.
Unable to make it to a drop off location? No problem! Filled bags can also be dropped off at the main office, and a volunteer will return them to a Bottle Drop site.
