KINDERGARTEN

This week in social studies students learned that continents are the largest landmasses on Earth! In science students experimented with changing the physical properties of matter.

Some reminders: Cooler days are here! Please make sure jackets and sweaters are labeled with your child’s first and last name. Also please make sure your child comes to school with a labeled water bottle for P.E. and recess daily.

FIRST

The first graders have been having so much fun learning about the sun, moon, and stars! Ms. Terentev’s class tracked the sun by tracing their shadows throughout the day and watching them move. Ms. Keene’s class learned about tools that help make things appear bigger - they used magnifying glasses to observe the small intricacies of seashells. Some classes have also enjoyed having our own laptop carts in our classrooms. It is going to be a quarter of growth for our computer skills!

SECOND

In Ms. Waugh’s Social Studies class, students went on a virtual field trip to Ellis Island to see what it was like to be an immigrant traveling through the checkpoints. They will be writing diary entries next week from an immigrant’s point of view.

In Math, Ms. Wiley and Ms. Waugh’s students are finishing up area and perimeter. Ms. Waugh’s class are constructing taco trucks and determining the are and perimeter of the required elements of the truck.

In Science, they finished up learning about wind energy and created hoop gliders then competed in a competition.

THIRD

This week in Social Studies students have been working on the Southeast Region in preparation for the big travel fair in a couple months. Over the next month they will be exploring all the different regions, landforms, and States.

In Engineering students are either working on the Fluor Engineering Paper Ball Challenge or Tower Challenges focusing on teamwork.

FOURTH

Students in Mr. Nemcik’s class are planning a vacation using a budget. The project requires students to use real world skills to research the costs of airfare, hotels, car rentals, passports, and other travel expenses. Most of the students were very surprised to learn the real cost of traveling with a family.

FIFTH

This week in Ms. Brown’s class, students have been learning about Jamestown, writing an essay on the 7 Wonders of the World, and working on a Martin Luther King Jr Biography Research Booklet.

SIXTH

Students in life science this week are learning about inherited traits through the use of Punnett Squares. Students in Mrs. Aramayo’s class participated in an activity using plastic eggs to determine parent genotype and the resulting probable genotypes of their offspring!

CONTEST AND CHALLENGES CONTEST AND CHALLENGES

STEM CONFERENCE 5TH AND 6TH GRADE

9th Annual Zora! STEM Conference for Middle School Students: a Virtual Program January 28, 2022 from 12:45-4:00 PM

The ZORA! ™ STEM Conference provides a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) opportunity for students who are traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields. Its purpose is to engage and inspire the students who participate; to expose them to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in ways they had not previously thought about and/or imagined; and to have them begin to think about a career in a STEM field.

The ZORA! ™ STEM Education Day will take place virtually January 28, 2022 from 12:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Florida High Tech Corridor will host the virtual event and provide teacher training afterschool on either January 5 or 12. Students and their teacher will log in to the event and attend the three sessions listed on the website.
