TOP STORY: Welcome back, Vikings!
We are hoping everyone had a safe, relaxing and enjoyable Winter Break! Now we are looking forward to everyone's return to campus, as classes resume Monday, Jan 9, to begin the second semester of the 2022-23 school year. New opportunities, challenges, adventures — and art (at left) — await you at H-F in 2023!
Pursuing the Dream: Wednesday at 7 p.m.
If you made a New Year's resolution to get more involved in your school community, we have an opportunity for you right away this Wednesday, Jan. 11. Make a plan to join us in the Mall Auditorium at 7 p.m. that night for Pursuing the Dream, as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a man whose words affected change. The evening will include powerful performances by the H-F Steppers, H-F Inspirational Voices and much more. This is the seventh presentation of this special event and each year has been a unique, moving experience. Please join us!
Dr. MLK, Jr. Day — A Day On, Instead of a Day Off
Stay involved by making Monday, Jan. 16, a day on instead of a day off (H-F will be closed for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day)! The Flossmoor Community Relations Commission will feature more than 12 service projects on this day, varying from park clean ups and food drives to making lunches for shelters or donating blood.
Here at H-F our Wrestling teams and coaches will be hosting Leaders are Readers in the Fieldhouse from 10:10 a.m.-Noon. Elementary students are invited to come read with a wrestler, and the community is invited to donate new and gently used children's books for Chicagoland youth organizations.
See a full list of volunteer opportunities at https://www.flossmoor.org/555/Martin-Luther-King-Jr-Day-of-Service-Pro. Make a plan now to get involved, Vikings!

Course Selection for 2023-24 Begins Soon
As we begin the final semester of the 2022-23 school year, it is time for our current freshmen, sophomores and juniors to think about their next year at H-F! Students will receive course selection information for the 2023-24 school year this month. Two Virtual Course Selection Informational Sessions have been scheduled for H-F families. Please plan to attend one of the following sessions on Zoom: Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m. (click here; Passcode: 596132) or Saturday, Jan. 14, at 9 a.m. (click here; Passcode: 859088).
As parents/guardians and students work together to make course selections, please first review the school's recommendations, which students will be able to view in the Info Dynamics program starting in mid-January. The 2023-24 course catalog is now available on the website (click here); the catalog outlines course descriptions, H-F’s graduation requirements, course prerequisites and college/career entrance requirements. Also included in the course catalog is information about the course-level rigors (CP - College Prep; H - Honors; AP/IB) and information on post-secondary and career planning. When choosing courses, please select the highest course level in which the student can be most successful, earning an A or B.
From Jan. 23-Feb. 24, students will have the opportunity to meet with their school counselor in order to finalize course requests for next year’s schedule and to discuss post-high-school planning. Course selection will close on Friday, Feb. 24.
Questions? Please contact Guidance Department Chair Jim Schmidt at james.schmidt@hf233.org or 708-335-5650.
SAT Test Prep sign up ends this Friday
Spots are still available for ExcelEdge SAT Test Prep for juniors! The SAT is still important for college planning, as it is used not only for college admissions, but also for placement and scholarships. H-F juniors will take the SAT on April 12 during the school day. To help them prepare for the test, H-F has invited ExcelEdge to offer its program — SAT 1600 — here at school. The program will be offered in-person by experienced instructors who are certified content specialists to teach point-producing offensive and defensive strategies on how to navigate difficult items on the SAT. Register now for one of two available sessions:
- Tuesdays from 1/31-3/14, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
- Saturdays from 2/4-3/18, 10 a.m.-Noon
Fee is $180/student. Juniors only. Registration is still open and will close this Friday, Jan. 13, or once the sessions are filled. To register on 8to18, click here.
