Pasadena Unified Board to Consider Additional Actions to
Protect Student Safety and Support Ongoing Soil Remediation Efforts
July 15, 2026
PASADENA, Calif. – At its July 16 meeting, the Pasadena Unified Board of Education will receive a public update on the District's ongoing Eaton Fire soil remediation project and consider additional actions intended to support the timely restoration of safe, healthy, and fully usable school campuses.
The public presentation will provide an overview of the environmental testing conducted following the Eaton Fire, the findings that identified fire-related contaminants at multiple campuses, the work being completed in alignment with the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), and the extensive planning and coordination that has occurred with public agencies throughout the remediation process.
In addition, the Board will consider a resolution related to the District's authority to carry out work on school property in accordance with state law. The Board will also meet in closed session to receive legal advice regarding the District's potential litigation options for protecting its campuses.
"We know this project has raised difficult questions throughout our community," said Superintendent Elizabeth Blanco, Ed.D. "Tomorrow's presentation is an opportunity to explain why this work is necessary, how these decisions have been made, and the steps the District has taken to protect both student safety and as many trees as possible."
The District's priority remains unchanged: completing the removal of fire-related contaminants from impacted campuses and restoring safe outdoor learning spaces before students return for the 2026-2027 school year.
The Board meeting begins at 5 p.m. in the PUSD Board Room at 351 S. Hudson Ave. Pasadena, CA 91101. Members of the public may attend in person or view the meeting online. The meeting agenda is posted at pusd.us/board.
