Seeing Our Region for the First Time… Again

Another Northeast TN Red Carpet Tour has come and gone

Suffice it to say, it had plenty of something for everyone

Are you familiar with this one?

I wish I was new to this town

Just pullin’ in, checkin’ it out

For the first time

Wish I could go anywhere

And not be afraid

Of finding you there

Yeah girl, when I see you around

I wish I was new to this town

New to this Town is a very underrated country song written by Kix Brooks, Terry McBride, and Marv Green in my opinion. It was recorded by Brooks – most known as being half of the duo, Brooks & Dunn – and released as the first single of his solo album of the same name in 2012. It’s a song about a man lamenting the end of a relationship and not being able to enjoy his usual spots as each one holds painful memories of his lost love.

While the circumstances are quite different, economic developers who are fortunate to live in a community as desirable as our collective home of Northeast Tennessee relate very much to the joy of discovering our communities, regions, and states over and over again. We have the privilege of seeing our communities through the fresh, scrutinizing eyes of prospects and site location consultants on a regular basis. This feeling was amped up last week as we rebooted our signature in-bound marketing event, the Northeast Tennessee Red Carpet Tour.

We hosted eight site location consultants along with partners from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, TVA, and AEP. Jeff Taylor, CEO of the Greene County Partnership, also joined us, as the Red Carpet Tour has always been a regional event.

In this edition of our quarterly newsletter you can read about many of the reasons our home is so special. There are stories about our (NETWORKS and BTES-owned properties) site development projects, Kingsport’s Premier Transportation expanding its operations, Bristol’s US Antibiotics gaining more market share through some lucrative contracts, Kingsport celebrating the beginning of construction of an IMAX theater, workforce development news including a TVA grant to expand career exploration for Bristol City Schools students as well as most recent E2E Summit led by the First Tennessee Development District, and some very cool events that have taken place in Sullivan County: Rhythm and Roots, Fun Fest, the MLB Baseball Classic at BMS along with the Bass Pro Shops Night Race, and the announcement that Breeze Airlines would have flights to and from Orlando, Florida and Washington DC at Tri-Cities Airport. Yes, all that happened over just the past three months!

I was recently asked to write a column for the Tri-Cities Business Journal for its October edition and I chose to write about the Red Carpet Tour. It’s a dicey proposition, writing about an event before it happens. If things go wrong, that pre-event enthusiasm can look misplaced and short-sighted. Fortunately, thanks to the NETWORKS staff and our partners with the City of Bristol, the City of Kingsport, BTES, AEP, and NETTA, things went off without a hitch and our guests were able to see our community in all its glory – our great diverse group of employers, our incredible education and workforce development partners and infrastructure, and the amenities and spirit that makes Northeast State such a wonderful place to live. They even got to see the beauty of Bays Mountain and the animals that call it home, race down the dragstrip of Bristol Motor Speedway’s Thunder Valley, and enjoy a memorable songwriters night at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum.

This was the first Red Carpet Tour for all eight of the site location consultants and for some of our partners. For us, the hosts, it was quite a thrill seeing our community “new” again through their eyes. Of course, I wouldn’t trade places with them because at the end of the week, they went home. We were already there.

Property Development Property Development

Strategic investments in site readiness and infrastructure are about laying the foundation for future growth. By preparing properties that meet the speed, scale, and flexibility today’s industries demand, we’re readying opportunity.

Each development represents progress, creating jobs, attracting investment, and strengthening our region’s competitive edge. These site improvements signal our partner's and investors commitment to long-term success and a thriving, resilient economy for generations to come.

BTES awarded TVA InvestPrep Grant for Bristol South Site

Bristol Tennessee Essential Services (BTES) has been awarded a Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) InvestPrep Site Development Grant to support grading and infrastructure improvements on approximately 45 acres along Highway 394 in Bristol, Tennessee.

The property, owned by BTES, sits adjacent to the utility’s new substation currently under construction and represents a strategic opportunity to prepare additional land for future industrial and commercial development. Through the InvestPrep program, TVA partners with local power companies and economic development organizations to enhance site readiness and strengthen the region’s competitiveness for new business investment.

BTES’s continued investment in both infrastructure and site preparation is helping ensure Bristol and the surrounding area remain positioned for growth and aligns with our region’s broader efforts to attract quality jobs and new industries to Northeast Tennessee.

Premier Transportation Expands Operations in Kingsport

Premier Transportation is hitting the road to growth with its latest expansion in Kingsport, marking a major investment in both the community and the region’s transportation network. The company recently acquired a 2.5-acre site near the I-26/I-81 interchange and has begun construction on a new 7,000-square-foot facility that will include multiple service bays and a dedicated indoor wash bay.

This expansion represents Premier’s return to the Tri-Cities area, where the company previously operated before the pandemic. The new location will create more than 35 jobs, including drivers and support staff, and will add around 15 new motorcoaches to its growing fleet.

Operations are expected to begin by May 2026, positioning Premier to provide faster, more efficient service across Kingsport, Johnson City, Bristol, and beyond.

Premier’s investment underscores the growing confidence in Northeast Tennessee’s business climate and adds another success story to the region’s expanding list of transportation and logistics assets—helping move both people and progress forward.

US Antibiotics Partners with Walmart and McKesson to Strengthen U.S. Amoxicillin Production

In a significant move to bolster domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing, USAntibiotics, the nation's sole manufacturer of amoxicillin and amoxicillin clavulanate, has announced a strategic collaboration with Walmart and McKesson. This partnership aims to enhance the U.S. supply of these essential antibiotics, ensuring greater accessibility and reliability for patients nationwide.

The collaboration will see USAntibiotics supply millions of life-saving doses of amoxicillin directly to Walmart pharmacies and to McKesson for distribution to pharmacies, health systems, and healthcare providers across the country. This initiative aligns with McKesson’s commitment to fortify the U.S. supply chain and strengthen healthcare access through its digitally connected distribution network. The collaboration with Walmart and McKesson is a significant step forward in helping Americans have stable access to high-quality, domestically produced antibiotics through one of the nation’s largest pharmacy networks.

This partnership not only strengthens the domestic pharmaceutical industry but also underscores a collective commitment to supporting U.S. manufacturing and ensuring the health security of the nation.
