Hi Powers Families...

There is no school on Monday in celebration of MLK Jr. Day!

The temperature got over 20 degrees real feel for the first time in a long time so we were able to get outside for recess today. On the flip side, the weather is expected to get very cold next week. Please dress students warmly. Frostbite can happen in less than 30 minutes in temperatures in the -15 to -20 degree range.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

No Treat Bags

Remember, with Valentines Day approaching. Classrooms will be celebrating in various ways. Teachers have asked me to remind parents that valentines are fine to send in but that we will not be handing out treat bags or distributing candies that are sent into class that are not a part of the valentines being handed out. For more detailed information, feel free to reach out to your child's teacher.

I have also been asked to remind families that Birthdays are celebrated in class by the teachers, each in their own way. We ask that cakes or treat bags not be sent to school with students. Look to your individual teachers for guidance and for information about how your child's class does celebrations.

Party Invitations

Regarding invitations being sent to school for birthday parties. We have adopted an all or none policy here at Powers. If you are inviting everyone in class to a party we will distribute the invitations for you. If you are wanting to invite a select group of friends, please don't put the teacher in the awkward position of crushing students by not being one of the "selected" friends. Students sometimes try to bring them to school, but sadly, they are not usually able to be discrete and their friends that get an invitation make a big scene because they were invited. If you wish to invite a select group of friends please reach out to them directly, outside of school, and if you need help getting that contact information our teachers would be happy to help connect students by sharing your contact information with those families.

Safety Concerns at Arrival and Dismissal Safety Concerns at Arrival and Dismissal

Car Drop Off and Pick Up

Drop Off

Please have students ready to go and wait for the staff parking lot support team to release the row. We have had some parents releasing students from cars while there were still cars at the back of the previous line that have not exited the parking lot. Getting them into school quickly is important but safety will always be our biggest priority!

Pick Up

Please resist the urge to wave or call children over to your car before they are released by staff. We know the intent is to let kids see you and know where your car is but on several occasions this has led to student confusion as students have tried to run to their cars because "my mom/dad is calling me". Staff wait until all of the cars in the previous row have exited before they release students to go get in their cars. When kids are release you can scream and wave like crazy! We will join you!

Main Parking Lot Drop Off

Be careful. Please use the crosswalk when going from the parking lot to the school, even if you have been given special permission to drop off your child at an alternative door associated with student needs and agreed upon safety plans. Directing children, even supervised, to cross the road between school buses sends a concerning message to our young students. Thanks for your support. Remember, the only people that should be dropping off students to the main parking lot in the morning should be preschool parents, those that were given a yellow car tag by the teacher or administration, and those checking into the office with their child.
