The Importance of School Attendance
BASD Attendance and Truancy Information
Every Day of School Counts!
What Can Parents/Guardians Do?
Set Expectations
- Show your child that school is important!
- Ask your child about their day and school work
- Make it a priority for your child to attend school each day
- Consistent daily school attendance helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Establishing a school routine teaches students that going to school and being on time is necessary for their academic and social success.
- Understand classroom and district policies regarding missed work when your child is absent
Make a Plan
- Plan vacations during school breaks
- Set a routine for leaving the house on time so your child is not late.
- Being late 10 minutes each day could result in 30 hours of lost learning time during a school year
- Missing just 2 days a month means a child misses 10% of the school year. Tardiness and early dismissal constitute being absent for part of a school day.
- All absences added together should equal 10 days or less per year
- Schedule appointments after school hours, when possible
- Bring your child back to school after their appointment, if there are still hours left in the school day
- If an absence is unavoidable, let the school know ahead of time so staff can gather assignments your child needs to complete to stay caught up
Communicate with the School
- Call the school/submit the absence through Skyward when your child is absent
- Bring a note from the doctor, if your child had an appointment during the school day
Partner with the School
- Reach out to the school if there are obstacles impacting your child’s attendance

School-Based Mental Health Services offered in the schools
Clinical Psychology Associates
Clinical Psychology Associates is a multi-specialty outpatient mental health clinic located in Burlington. They provide a range of services to individuals, families, and corporations. Traditional mental health services available through their clinics include outpatient individual and group psychotherapy, behavior management training, family therapy, and services for persons with addictions. Clinical specialty areas include Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), trauma, child behavior management, sexual abuse, depression, and anxiety. Clinical Psychology Associates also offer school-based therapy options.
Referrals for school-based services are made by school staff; including counselors, social workers, and psychologists. Parents who are interested in their child receiving these services should contact school personnel and request that a referral be made.
Professional Services Group
PSG has been providing school-based mental health since 2015. They strive to help prepare students to learn, by providing support with mental health and wellbeing challenges. Providing services within the school increases access for families who may not be able to go to an outpatient clinic on their own. It also reduces the amount of time students are missing classroom instruction, increasing their likelihood of academic success. School-based therapists go directly into the school to provide intervention including individual and group therapy, education/consultation for school personnel, and family therapy as needed.
Referrals for school-based services are made by school staff; including counselors, social workers, and psychologists. Parents who are interested in their child receiving these services should contact school personnel and request that a referral be made.

Energy Assistance (WHEAP - Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Plus)
WHEAP assistance is a one-time payment during the heating season (October 1-May 15). The funding pays a portion of energy costs, but it is not intended to cover the entire energy costs of a residence. The amount of the energy assistance benefit depends on a variety of factors, including the household’s size, income, and energy costs. In most cases, the energy assistance benefit is paid directly to the household’s energy supplier.
Energy Services for Racine County administers the WHEAP program. Call to schedule an appointment: 262-633-6000 or apply online at heat.help or print and complete and return a paper application.
