The SHARK Alert
Chatham Elementary School Community Update
February 23, 2025
Dear CES SHARKS & Friends,
I hope you had a wonderful February Break! Session III Clubs begin on Monday. Please check your email for confirmation and registration information. THEN, please update your PickUp Patrol dismissal plans so every SHARK is accounted for and sent to the right place at dismissal time.
This week Grades K-2 is off to the theater for a showing of "How I Became a Pirate". Please make sure to return signed permission slips to school ASAP. Additionally, we are still in need of volunteers for the CES Equity Team. Details about the team's work can be found below.
Have a great week and welcome back!!
Sincerely yours,
Dr. Kelly
CES & MRSD Needs YOU!!
Volunteers Needed for School Equity Team
As part of Monomoy’s commitment toward excellence in our schools, the District is partnering with the Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium (MAEC). Each school has been charged with creating a team of stakeholders (parents, guardians, and staff) to examine the school’s practices from a variety of perspectives. Your help is needed to make this work a success.
I hope you will consider joining this team as we explore the strengths and opportunities of Chatham Elementary School. Participation in the team will consist of roughly 4-5 hours of your time. There will be a one-hour training session, followed by the audit session which is estimated to take 3-4 hours. It is my hope that the CES team will represent a wide range of perspectives and experiences so we can truly meet the needs of all members of our community. Translation service will also be provided.
If you are interested in joining this important work, please email me at jakelly@monomoy.edu. I thank you in advance for your consideration and hope you will join me in this important work for our school.
Grades K-2 Theater Field Trip
Students in Grades K-2 will be attending a special performance on Tuesday, February 27th of the play How I Became A Pirate based off of the children's book by Melinda Long.
Please return signed Permission Slips by Wednesday, February 26th. Students will be provided a bag lunch (choice of ham & cheese, cheese, or sun butter & jelly sandwich) or can bring a bag lunch from home.
Admission to the performance is being sponsored by the Daniel J. Hollis Foundation. The Foundation, created in memory of Dr. Kelly's son Dan, works to provide young people with opportunities to expand their horizons through creativity, healthy competition, and community. As a young boy, Dan was an avid reader and loved pirates. The Foundation is thrilled to provide the K-2 students of CES the opportunity to experience a theater performance of one of Dan's most favorite pirate books.
Children's Author to Visit CES
CES is excited to announce that Children's Author, Melissa Stewart, will be visiting our school on Monday, April 7th as part of our Read Across America celebration. Ms. Stewart has written a number of high-interest and critically-acclaimed non-fiction picture books. During her visit she will be debuting her most recent title, MEET THE MINI-MAMMALS.
Students can pre-order signed copies of her books. Books will be distributed on April 7th. Orders are due by March 17th.
Hard copies will be sent home via back pack mail or you can download and print the Book Order Form HERE.
Notes from Nurse Heidi
New Club Session - Update your Dismissal Plans!!
For example, a student may have Tuesday Club on their plan, but that was in Session I and they are no longer attending the club. There has been a rise in the number of students reporting their dismissal plan is different than what is listed in PickUp Patrol. To help us keep your children safe and headed to the correct place after school we kindly ask that all families review their current PickUp Patrol plans and make any necessary adjustments.
Last minute changes to a daily schedule will be accepted in the app until 1:00 pm. Please call the office after 1:00 pm if there is a change in the day's dismissal plan.
CES Read Across America
CES March Madness Is Going STRONG!!
Our journey to Read Across America continues on this week with a match up between MY MOMMIES BUILT A TREEHOUSE and ODE TO GRAPEFRUIT. Students will vote on their favorite during their Media Class. In the meantime, if you would like to watch and listen to these beautiful stories, please check out the CES Read Across America Playlist on our school's YouTube account. New videos are added each week during the competition.
