Whether they're chatting within games or texting family members, kids need the skills to interact respectfully. Here are some tools to support positive, safe, and healthy ways for kids and teens to manage online interactions.
Active listening is an important skill for all of us to practice, especially when screens are in the mix. For younger kids, remind them that when they're using a device, it's important to pay attention when someone is talking to them. You can practice with your child, based on this activity, how to lower a screen or put a device away, remove headphones if they're being used, and look at the person speaking to them. For older kids, you can also discuss the difference between talking in person and communicating online. Using role-playing and activities can reinforce why body language, eye contact, and tone of voice can help us understand how someone feels in a way that letters on a screen aren't always able to do. That means we have to be extra clear (and kind) when we chat online.
A free interactive video series for middle school students and families to build healthy media and technology habits together. Topics such as online relationships and digital drama are presented in the series' Connecting with Kindness videos, with built-in pause points to check your child's understanding, plus reflection questions to spark deeper discussions.
As they get older, kids age 6 to 8 may watch and play on devices by themselves. They get the most out of it when adults get involved and talk with them about it.
