Introduction
To all our graduates, alumni, family and friends,
We developed the School of Nursing and Health Professions newsletter to provide our alumni, current students and key stakeholders with up-to-date information about the School of Nursing and Health Professions. We have sent out a number of newsletters over the past academic year; however, I believe that this newsletter is probably one of my favorites. In this newsletter, you will be able to tell from the faculty and leadership team how proud we are of our graduates.
During this time, we want to join our graduates and their families and friends in recognizing and celebrating their many accomplishments. I know that being recognized in a newsletter is not the same as walking across the graduation stage. I hope that you will find satisfaction in knowing that we recognize your hard work and are very proud of you. You have faced unique challenges and have overcome. Congratulations to all our graduates!
Dr. Dina Byers, interim dean
School of Nursing and Health Professions

Congratulations
Congratulations graduates! It has been a pleasure being a part of your academic journey! We are so proud of your hard work and accomplishments and wish you the best with your next adventure.
As you begin the next part of your life beyond your bachelor's degree, please drop us a line and a picture of you in your new endeavor. Whether the next part of life is your first professional position or putting on that white coat, we want to see you. Always remember to share your successes and allow us to proudly celebrate with you.
So much of what we wish to say may be lost due to social distancing, but we want to invite you to visit Murray State University and share your life. Please keep in touch and remain connected to your Racer family. We hope that you will join us at our annual gathering at the Big Apple Grill and Bar the Friday before Homecoming, and also stop by Tent City.
Lastly, this has been a special class. You have really stepped up and changed lives, whether it was through a health fair, public service or giving back directly to our community. We are so proud that you chose Murray State University and will forever be grateful for what we gained knowing you.
Thank you,
Dr. Amelia Dodd
Interim assistant dean, School of Nursing and Health Professions

Graduate nursing
Congratulations
DNP graduates,
You are closing your academic careers within the shadow of strange and challenging circumstances while stepping into a future of numerous uncertainties and many questions. You are also uniquely qualified and prepared to meet these challenges and face this future. You are not just advanced practice nurses, you are advanced practice nurses educated to lead the way into this future. You have worked hard and are well prepared for the endeavor before you. We are proud and honored to have been a part of your academic journey. Each of you have brought experiences and strengths to the program that have enriched your fellow classmates and your faculty. We all learn from you as you do from us.
Officially, your graduation will be a quiet one, sans the pomp and circumstance of previous graduations. I will miss having the opportunity to place hoods on the family nurse practitioner graduates and assist in the nurse anesthetist hooding. It is always a special honor to place a doctoral hood on a graduate. It represents a crowning achievement as you have earned the terminal degree in your field. Even though the graduation is not what you have been looking forward to it is no less meaningful or special. Take pride in what you have accomplished and go forward with the knowledge that you have our support, admiration and absolute confidence. You will do well.
Finally, please keep in touch with us. We will continue to take pride in your accomplishments and look forward to seeing where your lives and careers take you. Come back and visit so we can rejoice with you in your successes.
Dr. Katy Garth
Interim DNP program director

You have all shown true commitment to the field of occupational therapy and have come through strong for our program, for yourselves, and for your future patients. I am thankful for each and every one of you. The only advice I can give you is to continue to uphold extraordinary ethical standards in your professional and personal lives and to always encourage and lift up your coworkers and patients. Thank you all for pioneering this occupational therapy program and for your perseverance through accreditation and your courses. I know that huge career opportunities will be coming your way and that you will be successful in all that you pursue.”
Dr. Sherri Powers

“Eddie Teague Jr. was devoted to his collegiate success at Murray State University,” said Dr. Miranda Terry, Applied Health Sciences chair. “He overcame years of adversity by managing to commute back and forth from his hometown of Paducah, Kentucky, to Murray, Kentucky, to attend school full-time, working full-time as a single parent, all while having a positive impact on peers, and displaying strong leadership skills in the classroom. Eddie is a first generation college student, and now a graduate, and has overcome a lot to achieve this milestone. Undergraduate and RN to BSN nursing
Congratulations
“Congratulations class of 2020! I am so proud of you and all your accomplishments. I am sorry we cannot be together in person to celebrate. Let me start by saying that I am honored you chose me to stand on stage with you at the pinning ceremony. Thank you so much. I would have loved to give each of you a great big hug as you cross that stage. It seems so long ago that you were all in my assessment class. You were just ‘baby’ nursing students. Look at you now, all grown up and ready to face the workforce on your own. I wish each and every one of you much luck in your future jobs and personal lives. I am positive each of you will be successful, wherever you decide to work. Remember to give good care to your patients, but to also give good care to yourself. Stay healthy and keep in touch with each other and with faculty. I will miss your smiling, sometimes grumpy, and sometimes sleepy, faces in the hallways of Mason Hall. A. A. Milne said, ‘Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.’ Now go out and change the world, one patient at a time.”
Much Love,
Dr. Tonia Mailow
Assistant professor in nursing
“Hi all. First, I would like to thank each and every one of you for selecting me to pin you in the recognition ceremony. It is an honor. I truly enjoy the pinning ceremony. I feel so proud as students come to the stage to get their pin. I am sad that I won’t be able to ‘pin’ you in person. I will imagine it. As I see your graduation pictures, I will close my eyes and think about pinning you and feeling so very proud. It is also an honor to have been allowed to guide you in your professional growth in becoming registered nurses. When I applied for this job I was asked, ‘what are your goals for the students?’ My answer was, ‘I want to teach these students to be a nurse that I would want to work with.’ This is still true. I would be honored to work with any one of you, to call you my colleagues. If any of my grandchildren were in the hospital and I saw any one of you caring for my grandchild, I would breathe a sigh of relief. You are the best of the best. I have seen such growth in each of you. Every one of you have the potential to obtain any goal that you set for yourself, and when you do, I know you will reach that goal. It may not be easy, but you will get there. You have the tools and my support, one hundred percent. I wish each of you the best of luck and you have my blessing in your future endeavors.”
Take care and be safe,
Mrs. Carolyn Tinsley
Instructor in nursing
“Congratulations graduates! We applaud your dedication and commitment to the nursing profession. Even though we celebrate your milestone accomplishment in a unique way, your perseverance and hard work is still evident. We are honored and privileged to have shared the educational journey with you. Now more than ever, society needs the caring professionals that you are to create change and to improve the health of individuals, families and populations. We know that you will do just that!
“As you leave the halls of Mason Hall and the campus of Murray State University, please know that we are always here to support you and your future endeavors. Finally, it is with pleasure that we welcome you as a member to the Murray State University Nursing Alumni Association. Please join this organization in Homecoming activities and other exciting Nursing Alumni Association events. Again, congratulations and best wishes always!”
More now than ever, society is in need of the caring, professionals that you are,

A big thank you to the senior community health nursing students for implementing Nursing Neighborhood, and thank you to everyone that participated! On average, there were 15 students that participated each day Nursing Neighborhood was offered, with the pet therapy days having the largest turn outs.
