Creativity in Action: Hands-On Learning in Gifted Classrooms Creativity in Action: Hands-On Learning in Gifted Classrooms

From recycled paper to Renaissance art, students in Mrs. Dorrough’s gifted classes at Plato Academy Tarpon Springs are bringing their lessons to life!

In 2nd and 3rd grade, students explored the gifts of nature by reading The Giving Tree and creating handmade paper using colorful recycled scraps—each student brought home a one-of-a-kind piece.

Meanwhile, 4th and 5th graders stepped into the world of Leonardo da Vinci by painting frescoes using traditional Renaissance techniques. From charcoal outlines to plaster molds and vibrant colors, these young artists proved that hands-on learning never goes out of style.

We’re pretty sure Signor da Vinci would be proud!

Plato Students Attend Capstone Presentations at the USF Plato Students Attend Capstone Presentations at the USF

8th grade DIT students were invited by the USF College of Engineering/Computer Science dean, Dr. Ken Christensen, to attend the 2025 Capstone at USF Tampa.

The DIT students were mentored this year by Chad Hage, a PAC parent and Microsoft employee, who also helps mentor and work with the seniors at USF College of Computer Science. The students were able to tour some of the campus, purchase food at the Marshall Center, and get a glimpse into daily life at a bustling, major university located right here in the Tampa Bay Area.

They were able to then sit in on the graduating seniors' Capstone presentations, which allowed them to see the same skills they have been able to practice during their year long capstone. These skills emphasized collaboration, communication and innovation.

This event was a milestone for both Plato Academy of Clearwater and University of South Florida, as they have never had middle school students observe the College of Computer Science's Capstone presentations.

What an amazing opportunity for our students, as well as to help create a pipeline of possibilities for the future.

Supporting Our Communities Supporting Our Communities

A remarkable group of 70 volunteers gathered in the morning of Saturday, May 3rd morning for the Sunset Beach Cleanup, joining forces to remove an impressive 103 pounds of trash from our shoreline. The event brought together dedicated community members alongside students from the National Junior Honor Society chapters at Plato Academy Tarpon Springs, Plato Academy Trinity, and Plato Academy North-Palm Harbor.

Tarpon Springs Recreation Division extends their sincere appreciation to everyone who participated in this important environmental initiative and to Keep Pinellas Beautiful for their continued support, including providing the fantastic shirts and promotional items for our volunteers.

In honor of Earth Day, the National Junior Honor Society at Plato Academy Clearwater organized a community cleanup along a one-mile stretch of Belcher Road on April 26, 2025. The event welcomed participation from middle school families and staff, and successfully brought together 12 adults and 19 students who worked collectively to remove approximately 90 pounds of litter from the area.

This effort marks a continuation of NJHS’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Over the course of the school year, members have collected more than 300 pounds of trash through a series of highway cleanups—demonstrating their dedication to service and making a lasting impact on the community.

Art & Greek Mythology Art & Greek Mythology

At Plato Academy, students have been delving into the world of Greek mythology—researching the twelve Olympian gods and goddesses (plus a few others) and translating their knowledge into striking visual displays.

Through detailed, student-created posters, the ancient stories of Mount Olympus have taken on new life in the classroom, showcasing both historical understanding and artistic expression.

These myths, which continue to echo through modern culture—from blockbuster films to the names of planets and constellations—are proving to be as relevant and captivating as ever. This collection of student artwork is now proudly displayed on campus, celebrating the enduring power of storytelling and creativity.

Love for Nature Guides Plato Graduate's Career Decisions Love for Nature Guides Plato Graduate's Career Decisions

Paul Koubos, one of the very first graduates of Plato Academy Clearwater, recently visited our school to share his story with students. He talked about how he started out studying plant botany and even worked for a company in that field, but soon realized it wasn’t what made him happy. Instead, Paul decided to follow his passion and start his own chicken farm-a business he truly loves. During his visit, Paul did a wonderful job connecting with students, making his journey easy to understand and inspiring for kids and families alike.

His love for nature played a key role in his decision to start a chicken farm. His early interest in plant botany shows he was drawn to working with living things and the natural environment. When he realized that a traditional career as a plant botanist wasn’t fulfilling, he chose to channel his passion for nature into building a chicken farm-a hands-on way to stay connected to the outdoors, care for animals, and create something meaningful. His enthusiasm for what he does is evident in how he shares his journey and inspires others, especially young students, to pursue what they love.

A Day to Remember at “The Swamp”! A Day to Remember at “The Swamp”!

On Saturday, April 19, JV Flag Football teams from six Plato Academy schools took the field at the University of Florida’s iconic Ben Hill Griffin Stadium—better known as “The Swamp.”

From the first snap to the final whistle, our student-athletes made the most of this once-in-a-lifetime experience. The joy, energy, and sportsmanship on display were unforgettable.

A huge thank-you to our dedicated coaches for making this possible—especially on Easter weekend—and to everyone who helped give our players a day they’ll never forget!
