Hello Walsh Families and Happy September!
Brrr.. the weather is getting chilly! Please send a jacket or sweatshirt to school with your child. Gloves and hats will also keep them warm on colder days. We go outside for recess if the wind chill and temperature are 20 degrees or warmer.
Please join us for our Curriculum Night next Tuesday, September 9th from 6:00 - 7:30 PM. You will get to meet your child's teacher and learn about our curriculum.

District 104 Action Plan for Truancy
Tier 1 or Universal
Communication and awareness are the primary Tier 1 or Universal Level interventions. This will be accomplished through PowerSchool and Attendance Intervention and Communication System.
• Daily, the office staff will attempt to contact the parents/guardians of the student(s) who are marked absent. Additionally, a daily reminder will be sent at 9:30 AM to parents, letting them know their student(s) has been marked absent.
• All student's attendance will be tracked through PowerSchool and Attendance Intervention of Communication. Attendance postcards will be sent electronically to all students at every 5 absences (5, 10, 15, 20, 25…).
Most students/families (80% or more) are expected to respond to the Universal interventions.
Tier 2
Students’ families that have between 9 and 18 absences will receive personal communication from the school and school principal.
• 9 days of absences o A truancy letter regarding absence concerns (indicating the dates of absences) will be mailed. A copy will be placed in the student’s temporary file. o Meeting with the student (when appropriate)
• 18 days of absences
- A truancy letter will be mailed and added to their file
- The building administrator will contact the family/guardian regarding concerns.
- Future absences will be marked as Truant unless accomplished by a doctor's note.
- An attendance intervention plan can be implemented via social worker and administrator.
Tier 3
Students that have 19 or more truancies
• 21-Days of absences o A truancy letter will be mailed on each subsequent absence and added to the file.
- The building administrator will facilitate meeting with parent to discuss concerns.
- Social worker will provide resources for student and/or family counseling as well as agency support.
- Attendance intervention plan will be restructured as needed.
- Potential Involvement of the Summit Police Department
- Contact the Intermediate Service Center for Truancy
Social Work Update ~ Mrs. Fletcher
Hello Walsh Families! My name is Maggie Fletcher, and I am the school social worker. I have been serving students and families in Summit School District 104 since 2004 and look forward to continuing work with the Walsh community.
This year, our social-emotional learning (SEL) lessons will connect with the Benchmark English Language Arts curriculum. To start the year, I’ll be leading weekly lessons during Unit 1 to help model how SEL connects with what students are learning in the classroom.
I’m excited to partner with you and our staff to support students’ growth and well-being throughout the school year! Each month, I’ll also share a parent tip to support your child at home.
✨ Parent Tip: Ways to Communicate Better With Your Child
Set aside dedicated time to talk with your child every day. Even a few minutes of focused attention can make a big difference!
School is back in session. Let’s share kindness and not germs!
- · Washing your hands is the most effective way to prevent the spread of germs!
·
· When you send your student to school you are attesting that your student is in good health and ready for learning. Follow these guidelines for when to return to school on our top 3 symptoms:
*Fever :(100.0 or higher) The student may return to school after being fever free for 24hours without fever reducing medication.
*Vomit: The student may return to school after being free of vomiting for 24hrs.
*Diarrhea: The student may return to school after being free or diarrhea for 24 hours.
Strep Throat and Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease
If you have a sore throat, wash your hands often and cover your mouth when coughing and sneezing. Avoid sharing eating utensils, like forks or cups with others. See your doctor if you have any symptoms of strep throat.
