CES Weekly Communicator
Issue #12: October 24, 2025
Principal Corner
Happy Friday, CES Families!
Report cards go home today — please check your child’s bookbag for their envelope.
We’ve also extended our PTO Read-a-Thon! We are currently $7,544 short of our goal. Please take a moment to read the PTO section below for ways you can help promote the Read-a-Thon. The funds raised go directly back to our students, teachers, and families to make CES a strong and thriving school community. Let’s work together to reach our goal!
Also, please review our Fall Party and Parade expectations, including what students may wear if they choose to participate and our rainy-day schedule procedures. If your child will not participate in the parade, please email your child’s teacher as soon as possible.
Thank you for your continued support — and have a wonderful weekend! 🍁
Sincerely,
Nikki Miller
This is our last week of One School, One Book. Please let your friends and family know how much your child is reading as one school. Have them donate to our PTO Read-A-Thon and have your child tell them about The Wild Robot.
Please consider donating here: https://app.99pledges.com/fund/chapelfield25?home_v2=true. Continue to follow along with our One School, One Book. Our website, linked below, will keep you updated on all events.

This week is Digital Citizenship Week. We are learning how to be safe, responsible, and respectful when online. I have reinforced with every student that when they are questioning something, or they are not sure about something they find online, they should talk to their trusted adult. Here are some parent resources for the topics we have been talking about:
Common Sense Media Family Tips and Activities
Google’s Be Internet Awesome Family Resources
Kindergarten - We read Alma and How She Got her Name for Hispanic Heritage Month. We discussed our family traditions and if there is a story for our own names. We read Creepy Carrots for our October spooky read. For Digital Citizenship Week, students are learning three rules to be safe online: always ask an adult first, only talk to people you know, and stick to sites just right for you. Our powerful words have been: heritage, creep, and creepy.
First Grade - For Hispanic Heritage Month we read Alma and How She Got Her Name. We discussed the traditions and heritage in our families, and shared any stories behind our own names. We read Creepy Carrots for our spooky October read. For Digital Citizenship Week, students have been learning to pause and think when online, and to use our head, heart, arms, legs, feet, and gut when making decisions. Our powerful words have been: heritage, creep, and creepy.
Second Grade - For Hispanic Heritage Month we read My Papi has a Motorcycle. We discussed our own family heritage, traditions, and celebrations we have in our families. For an October spooky book, we read The Quacken and used evidence to support our answers when discussing the book. During Digital Citizenship Week we are learning how to be a super digital citizen by being safe, responsible, and respectful online. Our powerful words have been: heritage and evidence
Third Grade - Third graders have started a research project to support their learning in Wit and Wisdom. First, they built a lego submarine, and then the next week they learned how to code it to move and help the scientist explore the ocean. Now students are becoming ocean explorers themselves by choosing an ocean animal to research and learn more about. Students may use books or a digital resource (Pebble Go Next, World Book Kids, World Almanac for Kids, or Capstone eBooks) to learn about the animals appearance, habitat, place on the food chain, adaptations, and other fun facts. Next month, students will be using their research to create a Google Slides presentation of everything they have learned.
Fourth Grade - For Hispanic Heritage Month we read Planting Stories about Pura Belpre. We discussed the meaning of the word heritage and what traditions make up the heritage of our own families. For a spooky October read, we read The Widow’s Broom. We used text evidence to make conclusions about what happened. During Digital Citizenship Week we are discussing different scenarios and if it is ok to share private information. Our powerful words have been: heritage and evidence.
Fifth Grade - For Hispanic Heritage Month we read Dreamers and discussed the traditions in our families that create our own heritage. For a spooky October read we enjoyed The Stranger. We used text evidence to support who we think the stranger is, and had some lively discussions. (There is no answer!!) During Digital Citizenship Week we are discussing different situations and if it is ok to share private information. Our powerful words have been: heritage and evidence.

1.Log in to your Infinite Campus Parent Portal account.
2. Select your child’s profile.
3. Navigate to the Absence Request section.
4. Fill in the required information, including the date and reason for the absence.
5. Submit your request.
You will be able to view the status of your request using the View Requests button.

Medical excuses from a doctor can be submitted to Stephanie Gilzow, our school secretary, through email (gilzows@gjps.org) or sending in a paper copy.
Parent Phone calls to change transportation
The front office is a busy place the last 30 minutes of school. We ask that parents NOT CALL to make transportation changes after 2 p.m. Please make sure students know your plan of pick up before they come to school.

Visual & Performing Arts Gifted Education Identification
Each year, school districts in Ohio are required to offer an opportunity for students in grades K-12 to be identified as gifted in the area of Visual and Performing Arts. The identified areas of giftedness for Visual and Performing Arts include Visual Arts, Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Drama/Theater, and Dance.
