Message from Ms. Joanna Message from Ms. Joanna

Dear PS 107 Families,

Welcome back from Spring Vacation! I hope you are enjoying this beautiful spring week. As we move through the final months of the school year, I’m continually inspired by the energy, joy, and learning happening throughout our building. Thank you for being such engaged partners in our work.

Today is Administrative Professionals Day, and I want to take a moment to recognize someone who is truly the heartbeat of our school: Ms. Donna Bruno. Whether she’s managing the front office, comforting a nervous student, or answering late-night texts and emails, Donna is on call 24/7 to keep PS 107 running smoothly. Nobody works harder or is more dedicated to our school than Ms. Donna, and we are so lucky to have her. If you have a moment, I encourage you to stop by or send a quick note of thanks—she deserves all the appreciation in the world.

I also want to share an important update regarding the mandated class size reduction that all NYC public schools must implement by 2028. New York State legislation requires a maximum of 20 students per class in grades K–3 and 23 in grades 4–5. Our School Leadership Team (SLT) has been actively working on this issue since the end of last school year. After exploring several options—including constructing an annex in our Big Yard, acquiring a second site, and building additional classrooms on our 4th floor—we proposed reducing our incoming Kindergarten cohort from 100 to 80 students. This would have allowed us to begin phasing in smaller classes in a sustainable, equitable way.

Unfortunately, our plan was rejected by the Division of School Leadership, as they are not currently approving proposals that reduce a school’s enrollment—even when the school has no viable space for new classrooms. Like many of you, we are deeply disappointed. Our SLT is now back to the drawing board, and we remain committed to finding a workable solution. We’ll continue to keep you updated as this conversation evolves, as the outcome will have a significant impact on our community.

You may have noticed on the NYC Public Schools calendar that there is an Evening Parent-Teacher Conference for elementary schools scheduled for Thursday, May 1st, from 4:30–7:30 p.m. These conferences are by invitation only. Teachers will be meeting with families of students for whom there have been academic and/or social-emotional concerns—this includes students whose promotion may be in doubt or families who have already had additional meetings with teachers this year. Teachers will reach out directly to schedule conferences. We kindly ask that families do not reach out to teachers to request a meeting unless invited. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Lastly, a reminder to vote in the upcoming Community Education Council (CEC) elections, which run from April 25th through May 13th. Voting takes place through your NYC Schools Account (NYCSA). I’m excited to share that one of our own—third grade parent to Lucy and PS 107 alum Angelica Cesario—is running for a seat on the District 15 CEC. These councils play an important role in shaping school policy and advocating for families. To learn more and cast your vote, visit the CEC Elections Information site.

Thank you, as always, for your partnership, your feedback, and your continued support of PS 107. It’s a privilege to lead this community, and I look forward to seeing many of you at the many celebratory events that we have coming up to close out the 2024-2025 school year.

Warmly,

Ms Joanna

REMINDERS & HELPFUL TIPS

NYC SCHOOLS ACCOUNT - NYCSA

This is a NYC DOE parent account for students grades K - 12 that enables parents/guardians to view all of their children’s records - grades, fitnessgrams, attendance, your child’s DOE email, etc. At least one parent/guardian will need to have access to this account.

We strongly encourage all parents/guardians to have their own account. Any parent with children in grades k-5 who does not have their own NYSCA , please contact nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov for instructions and your unique account creation code.

MAKING SCHOOL DAY DISMISSAL PICK-UP CHANGES

If there is a change to your child’s dismissal, please be sure to note the change on the Daily Dismissal form in Operoo. If it is a same day change, please email your child’s teacher and cc Nadia at nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov in addition to making any changes on the Daily Dismissal form. You can also contact the main office at 718-499-2054.

MAKING AFTERSCHOOL DISMISSAL CHANGES

If you need to add a new pick up person for your child in afterschool, please make sure to update this on 6Crickets (Click Here). Afterschool and PS 107 partner in many ways, but not with our information applications. They can't access Operoo and we can't access 6Crickets.

Thank you for your assistance in ensuring your child's safety 😊

IDENTIFICATION

When entering the school building you must present your ID to the safety agent when signing in.

One helpful tip is to take a picture of your id. Often, we will have our phone with us even if we don’t have our id. This way, you always have it handy :)
