ConneCTEd | March 2026
Wildcat Families:
March is a dynamic season for our CTE programs as students move through competition season, participate in industry visits, complete certification exams, engage in work-based learning, and bring their hands-on projects to life—demonstrating the knowledge and skills they’ve built all year long. As we head into the final stretch of the school year, we are also building excitement for graduation and celebrating the accomplishments of our seniors who are preparing to enter the workforce, military, or postsecondary training. Their dedication reflects the strength of our programs and the value of real-world learning experiences.
At the same time, we are already looking ahead—planning summer opportunities, expanding industry partnerships, and preparing pathways that will serve students even more effectively next year. Spring reminds us that growth takes intention, and we are committed to ensuring every student is equipped with the skills, credentials, and confidence needed for future success.
Thank you for your continued support of CTE. It is because of our collective efforts that students are not only career-aware—but truly career-ready.
Here’s to a strong finish and an even brighter season ahead!

Strong Start for FFA's Career Development Event Season
Starting each spring — woven right into stock show season — Career Development Events (CDEs) begin for FFA members. These competitions focus on developing real-world career skills in a variety of agricultural fields and require hours of research, practice, and preparation. From written exams to hands-on evaluations and public speaking, students dedicate significant time to sharpening their knowledge and professionalism ahead of competition.
Since the start of the season, Elgin FFA members have represented our community exceptionally well, showing measurable growth from one contest to the next as they prepare for district and area events in April. Highlights from this year’s CDE season include:
- Hayley Wenzel placed 3rd out of 417 individuals at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, missing a major scholarship by just one point. The Horse Judging Team — Hayden Wenzel, Preston Maass, Cavanaugh Fowler, and Taitin Parsons — also earned an impressive 13th place finish out of 126 teams.
- Preston Maass advanced to the finals of the Prepared Public Speaking Contest at the San Antonio Stock Show, earning 4th place out of 50 competitors.
- The Floriculture Team placed 7th out of 39 teams at the Klein Oak CDE Invitational. Audrey Wiseman ranked 6th high individual out of 139 competitors. Team members Miranda Herring, Sophia Yanez, and Mia Dunne contributed to the strong team finish. Audrey continued her success by improving her score and placing 7th high individual at the Burleson County Classic.
- Competing in Bellville, the Entomology Team placed 13th overall, with Hope Bray earning 22nd high individual honors. Team members Nayeli Vergara, Kayleigh Rodriguez, and Laylah Garcia also represented Elgin with excellence.
While these results highlight several recent accomplishments from CDE season, they represent only a portion of the hard work and success of our FFA members. To stay up to date on additional results and upcoming events, follow the Elgin FFA Facebook page.
We are incredibly proud of the dedication these students and their advisors demonstrate in representing Elgin ISD across the state and wish them continued success as they prepare for their upcoming qualifying contests.

Wildcats in Action
ACEA Career Expo 🚧
On Friday, March 27, students attended the Greater ACEA Construction Expo hosted by the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department. The department plays a critical role in installing and maintaining the infrastructure that manages rainwater and flood control throughout the city.
During the expo, students connected with industry professionals from land surveying firms, heavy equipment sales and service companies, and Watershed Department staff. They also gained hands-on experience by operating heavy equipment themselves, giving them a firsthand look at careers in construction and infrastructure management.
The Wildcat Resurgence ⚡
Seniors in the Practicum of Transportation Systems course are hard at work on their annual capstone project — rebuilding The Wildcat. While progress takes patience and precision, students are making steady strides as they reassemble the electrical vehicle (EV) and add this year’s custom touch: purple underbody lighting for an eye-catching glow.
This longstanding project goes far beyond basic automotive repair. Each year, students integrate electrical systems, computer diagnostics, and advanced automotive service skills — preparing them to adapt and thrive in today’s rapidly evolving automotive industry.
Flower Power 💐
Elgin Floral Design and Advanced Floral Design students recently explored the floral industry firsthand with a visit to two Austin-area businesses. Their first stop was Pikes Peak Floral, the wholesaler they regularly order from, where students learned about global flower sourcing, processing, and fulfilling florist orders.
The group then visited Freytag’s Florist to experience the retail side of the industry, observing designers at work, plant sales, and cash-and-carry operations. The visit provided valuable, real-world insight into career opportunities in both wholesale and retail floral design.
TSTC TechXperience 📚
Students recently attended TechXperience Day at the Texas State Technical College Williamson County campus, where they explored hands-on career pathways in high-demand technical fields. Throughout the day, students participated in interactive demonstrations, toured state-of-the-art labs, and connected with instructors and industry professionals.
From advanced manufacturing and welding to cybersecurity and automotive technology, TechXperience provided a firsthand look at the skills, certifications, and training opportunities available after high school. The visit gave students valuable insight into career-ready programs and helped them envision the next steps in their education and workforce journey.
March Teacher Feature
This month’s Teacher Feature shines a spotlight on Elgin ISD’s Human Services educators in our Education & Training and Health Science programs. These dedicated professionals lead pathways that are both impactful and forward-thinking—one built on a long-standing tradition of excellence and the other rapidly expanding to meet the evolving demands of today’s workforce. Through their leadership, students are gaining the knowledge, skills, and real-world experiences needed to thrive in high-demand, service-driven careers.
Education & Training: A Legacy of Excellence
Our Education & Training program is a well-established and highly successful pathway that continues to set the standard for student achievement. Year after year, students compete at the highest levels through TAFE (Texas Association of Future Educators), earning top honors at state and national competitions and representing Elgin with distinction.
Beyond competition success, the program delivers meaningful, career-ready outcomes. Students graduate as certified Educational Aides, equipped with practical classroom experience and professional skills that allow them to immediately contribute in educational settings. Many program completers go on to pursue degrees in education—and several have proudly returned to Elgin ISD as employees, serving the very community that helped shape their journey.
This “grow your own” model reflects the strength of the program and the dedication of its instructors, who consistently prepare students not just for college, but for careers in education.
Health Science: Growing to Meet the Moment
While Education & Training celebrates a strong legacy, our Health Science program is in an exciting season of growth and expansion. With increasing student interest and a rising demand for healthcare professionals across our region, the program continues to scale thoughtfully to meet the needs of students, the community, and industry partners.
Students engage in hands-on learning experiences focused on patient care, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and clinical skills, while working toward industry-based certifications. Partnerships with healthcare providers continue to expand, strengthening real-world connections and career readiness opportunities.
Looking ahead, the addition of an Exercise Science program next school year—developed in partnership with the Athletics Department—will further enhance and support our existing Sports Medicine pathway. This expansion will provide students with deeper study in human movement, injury prevention, rehabilitation, and performance science, opening doors to careers in physical therapy, athletic training, exercise science, and sports performance.
Together, these programs reflect both excellence and innovation—one grounded in a proven track record of success, and one building strong momentum for the future. We are grateful for the educators who lead this work and for the lasting impact they are making on Wildcats today and for years to come.
SCHOOL 🤝 COMMUNITY
Collaborative Project Hits Homerun ⚾
Elgin High School welding students recently partnered with the Elgin Baseball & Softball Association to help prepare the fields for the spring season. Students designed and constructed a new set of bleachers in the EHS welding lab, then transported and installed them at the Elgin Little League fields. While onsite, they also replaced boards on an existing set of bleachers—enhancing safety, function, and appearance for families and fans.
This collaborative project addressed a real community need—one that will benefit Elgin families for years to come. For many of our students, these are the same fields where they once played during their own little league years, making the experience especially meaningful.
The Elgin Baseball & Softball Association generously provided all materials for the project. Throughout the design and build process, students gained valuable hands-on experience that strengthened both their academic knowledge and industry-ready skills—skills that are transferable across a wide range of career pathways. This partnership was a true example of collaboration, creating lasting impact for both our students and our community.
Students pictured here installing the boards include: (L-R) Alexis Ramirez, Ruben Zuniga, Eric Gonzalez, Emilio Padron, Jose Salas, and AJ Snyder. Welding instructors whose classes participated in this project are Brayton Buchanan, Andrew Buckler, and Josh Warner.
Learning By Leading: FFA & TAFE Shine Through Service
Student leaders from FFA and TAFE recently stepped beyond their own classrooms to serve in two meaningful volunteer events: reading to students at Elgin’s own Neidig Elementary School and guiding elementary groups as tour leaders during the Rodeo Austin (STAR of Texas) Livestock Show.
At Neidig, high school students shared stories, encouraged questions, and connected with younger learners—promoting literacy while modeling confidence, character, and a love for learning. During the livestock show, students took on the role of ambassadors, leading tours, explaining agricultural projects, and engaging elementary visitors in educational discussions about animal science, industry practices, and the importance of agriculture in our daily lives.
Both experiences provided valuable leadership development for FFA and TAFE members as they represented Elgin ISD with professionalism and pride. By serving as positive role models and mentors, these students strengthened their communication skills, built confidence, and demonstrated the power of service-driven leadership in action.
The Homestead: A New Era of Learning
Elgin ISD is proud to highlight The Homestead—a transformational project made possible because our community said yes in the recent bond election. Thanks to the support of voters, this one-of-a-kind facility is being renovated into an authentic, hands-on learning environment that will serve students for generations to come.
Currently under construction and set to open to Culinary Arts students in Fall 2026, The Homestead is thoughtfully designed in three integrated sections: a state-of-the-art culinary kitchen, a centrally located classroom, and a flexible event space. The classroom offers full visibility into the kitchen and can open directly into the event area, allowing seamless transitions between daily instruction, live demonstrations, banquets, and special events.
The event space will feature a modern café-style atmosphere, operating as a student-led restaurant during the day and a versatile venue for community events in the evening. The professional-grade kitchen will mirror industry standards, giving students hands-on experience in food production, preparation, presentation, service, and management—equipping them with real-world, career-ready skills.
Situated on multi-acre property, The Homestead also creates meaningful farm-to-table learning opportunities that connect directly to Elgin ISD’s established agricultural programs in plant, animal, and food sciences. Students will explore the full journey of food—from cultivation and production to preparation and presentation—bridging agriculture and culinary arts in authentic, experiential ways.
The Culinary Arts program launched in the 2025–2026 school year in direct response to the bond approval and vision for this renovated space. Under the guidance of experienced culinary professionals, students are already building foundational skills in hospitality, food service, restaurant management, catering, and entrepreneurship. When The Homestead opens, they will transition into a professional setting where they can refine their craft while serving real customers.
The Homestead represents more than a building—it reflects community investment, innovative learning, and Elgin ISD’s commitment to preparing Wildcats for high-demand, high-skill careers while strengthening the connection between our schools and the community.
