Meet our Academic Coaches
Mrs. Jurich: This is my second year at Kinnaman. As an Academic Coach, I support math and literacy. In this role, I work with teachers to best support the needs of students. The best part of my job is getting to know all of the students from Kindergarten all the way to Fifth Grade. Go Coyotes!
Mrs. Scribner: Hi Coyotes! I have been a teacher at Kinnaman for 14 years. I started teaching 1st and 2nd grade here, but for the past 10 years I have been the Reading Academic Coach. My job at Kinnaman is to coach teachers and students around reading. Most students know me as the Bookstore Lady because when students meet a reading goal at Kinnaman they earn a trip to our Kinnaman Bookstore. One thing you need to know about me is that when I was in elementary school, I was not a strong reader. Thankfully, my teachers and family helped me learn to read and now I am an avid reader. My favorite part of being a part of Kinnaman is all the smiles and waves I get from students.

CogAT Screener
In October or November, all 3rd grade students in Beaverton will be administered the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Screener. This 30-minute test measures students’ learned reasoning abilities through verbal/picture analogies, number analogies and figure matrices. Families whose student scores in the 90th percentile or above on the CogAT screener will be notified and invited to give permission for their students to take the remainder of the test. There will be post-screener testing and full CogAT testing happening in elementary schools up until winter break. For more information about testing, please contact your school’s TAG facilitator.
5th grade families can ask that their student take the CogAT Screener by completing this google form link.
If your student is on vacation or ill during the 3rd grade screener, we will not be able to accommodate a testing session in advance. When you return, check in with the building TAG Facilitators to see if there is an easy way to add your student to a future testing session.
If your 4th or 5th grade student did not attend a Beaverton school in 3rd grade, or missed the screener for whatever reason, you can tell your student’s classroom teacher that you would like your child to be tested. Students cannot be tested with the CogAT in consecutive years. For example, a 4th grader cannot take the CogAT if they took the screener in 3rd grade. Parents of 5th grade students, whose students did not take the CogAT as 4th graders, who would like to request their children take the CogAT again can fill out this google form. Parents need to sign up on the google form at least 5 days before the testing is scheduled to happen at their specific school.

Kindness in the Classroom
We will focus on caring for the months of November and December. The Caring Unit is our second unit in this six unit year. The focus in our caring unit is on exploring how to be caring in a variety of contexts. The lessons will explore caring and how it incorporates helpfulness, gratitude, compassion, empathy, and kindness. Empathy and gratitude are explored in depth as tools for expressing caring.
Attendance Matters
We expect students to attend school on time every day if they do not meet the Too Sick for School criteria.

Visitor/Volunteer Policy
If you haven’t done so already, please reapply to be a volunteer or visitor in the Beaverton School District. We’re implementing a new volunteer management system and need time to process and complete the criminal background checks for all applicants.
Please note, that to enter the school building during regular student hours, you must have completed the background check. It takes about 10 days to process so please plan ahead.
Start on the Volunteer webpage on the district website. The entire process — including the review of the Child Abuse Prevention & Reporting and Adult Sexual Misconduct training materials — should take less than 10 minutes to complete.
Thank you for prioritizing our students’ safety and for your willingness to volunteer in BSD.
