Health Room Update
The peak of the cold and flu season is upon us, and our little braves have been experiencing a noticeable increase in illness. We have seen many cases of flu, strep throat, and the stomach flu. While our wonderful teachers and custodians are doing their best to clean and sanitize, we are enlisting your help. To prevent widespread flu and illness in the school, we recommend that your child stay home from school if he/she experiences flu or respiratory symptoms.
To decide whether to send your child to school, please consider the following guidelines:
Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest if he/she has any of the following:
● Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough
● Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)
● Headache
● Mild stomachache
● Congested (wet) or croupy cough
DEFINITELY keep your child at home for treatment or pediatrician visit with these symptoms:
● Fever (greater than 100 degrees by mouth
● Vomiting (especially if unable to eat or drink)
● Diarrhea
● General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness or muscle aches
● Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose
● sore throat with redness or white spots or enlarged tonsils
Enforce and teach good hand hygiene habits:
● Wash hands frequently
● Do not touch eyes, nose, or mouth
● Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, Coughing or sneezing into their bent elbow, not their hands.
● Avoid close contact with people who are sick
Colds/Flu are the most contagious during the first 48 hours. A child who has a fever should remain at home until “fever free” for a minimum of 24 hours(without fever reducing medications). A child who has started antibiotics needs to be on the medication for 24 hours(or pediatrician order) before being able to return to school. Often when a child awakes with vague complaints (the way flu begins) it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding to send him/her to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom. If there are concerns about attendance, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Thank you in advance for helping make the rest of this year at school as healthy as possible.

The Annual Impact Aid Survey
Each year all Richland 1 families are asked to complete an Impact Survey for each student. The purpose of this survey is to obtain financial assistance based on the number of students who are federally connected. The connections could be residence on federal property, or a parent/guardian that works for the federal government or on federal property, or has a parent or guardian serving in the military.
The survey is accessible via the parent portal and needs to be completed by January 19, 2024. Attached is additional information about the survey, how to complete it, and why it is important.
Student Dress Code Amendment
A revision has been made to the student dress code. This revision is regarding pajamas.
Pajamas are only permitted to be worn on special designated days.
Dress Code:
- All students have the responsibility to observe the basic standards of cleanliness and good grooming. A student’s dress and appearance should not cause disruption, be immodest, distract others from the educational process or create a health or safety problem. Students are to wear comfortable clothes that are appropriate in length. Short shorts and short skirts are unacceptable for school attire. The torso must be covered. No pajamas, strapless garments, halter tops, spaghetti straps, cropped shirts or blouses, muscle shirts, or baggy pants are permitted. Profanity, offensive language or images, and advertisements for firearms, alcohol, drugs, drug paraphernalia or tobacco products may not be affixed to any clothing. Caps, bandanas, wristbands, pajamas, and hats are only worn on “special days” or as needed for costumes with grade level programs. Shoes must be appropriate for physical activity with an enclosed heel or strap around the ankle. For safety reasons on the playground and in physical education, no flip flops, high heels or “crocs” may be worn.
Pick Up, Drop Off, Walk Ups, and Hill Star Court
Before the break, I received several complaints from residents of Hill Star Court regarding Morning Take-In and Afternoon Walk Ups. The residents are concerned about driveways being blocked and double parking on the street.
Pages 3 & 4 of the student handbook explain the Drop off and Pick Up procedures. Hill Star Court is listed as a no Drop off or Pick Up area. Please take a moment before returning to review these.
Car Line Update
Car Line Procedures & No Left Turn Signs
- As we return from break please be reminded to Maintain ONE line on Satchel Ford Road. DO NOT make 2 lines at the split point. Doing this blocks traffic on Satchel Ford Road.
- Do not enter the carline from Shannon Springs Road. This is adding to the congestion at the back of the line towards the 4 way stop. Please enter the carline from the 4 way stop at Brierfield.
- DO NOT drop off or pick up students at the side of Satchel Ford Road. The front parking lot is NOT a student drop off or pick up area. Students are only to be dropped off and picked up at the drop off and pick up areas at the front and side car lines.
- The DOT has installed No Left Turn signs on Satchel Ford Road at the entrances and exits to all of the car lines. If you haven't seen them, please keep a look out for them, and make sure the proper traffic patterns are being followed. FAPD has been notified of them and will be patrolling Satchel Ford Road.
