Prohibition: Why Did the United States Change Its Mind?

On January 16, 1919, Nebraska became the 36th state to ratify the 18th Amendment to the Constitution. The Amendment declared it illegal to manufacture, transport, and sell alcoholic beverages in the United States. More than two-thirds of the Senate, two-thirds of the House of Representatives, and three-fourths of the state legislatures now had approved the change. The US would become a dry country. And yet, 14 years later the Amendment was repealed. Americans had changed their minds. This Mini-Q asks why.

Martin Luther King and Malcolm X: Which Strategies Made the Most Sense for America in the 1960s?

The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s resulted in America’s biggest social revolution since the Civil War. The movement was grassroots and reached across the entire country. Two remarkable men, both quite young, and not always in agreement, became the clearest voices in the movement. These two men were Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. In this Mini-Q you will consider the thoughts of both individuals. The documents are short but the ideas are large.

The California Gold Rush: A Personal Journal

In January, 1848, gold was discovered in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. At the time there was no telegraph service connecting California with the East. Word of the discovery took several months to cross the country. When the news did reach the States, and the news was proven to be fact, it launched one of the most exciting movements of people in American history.
