Jay Wright is a former American college basketball coach who led the men's programs at both Hofstra and Villanova. He led Hofstra to the NCAA tournament in both 200 and 2001. After becoming the head coach at Villanova, Wright led the Wildcats to six Big East Conference championships,16 NCAA tournament appearances, four Final Fours (2009, 2016, 2018, 2022) and won two national championships in 2016 and 2018! In 2021, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

As we move inside for the winter sports season, I'd like to share what Coach Wright had to say about what it takes to have great teams:

"The best teams have players who embrace their role, whatever it is, and elevate it. Everyone's role is different, but everyone's status is the same. A role is just a position, not a measurement of your value. No matter how bright the spotlight gets, we are all part of something much larger than ourselves."

In the world of education-based athletics, it's important to remember that sports help teach us about life ... and in life, we are all part of something much bigger than ourselves - a family, a company, a community. If we embrace our role and elevate it, we help make our team great and everyone benefits!

Winter sports are here ... and it's time for BricksCenter!

Basketball

Girls

On Saturday afternoon, the Brickies opened up the 2024-2025 season at home against the Boone Grove Wolves. As you can imagine, game #1 always involves some first-game jitters and it showed as both offenses were slow to get going. After 8 minutes of play, the Wolves led 7-4. In the 2nd quarter, Hobart cranked up the heat on D-D-D-DEFENSE and turned some Boone Grove turnovers into transition baskets! The Bricks outscored Boone 15-3 in the period ... including a fastbreak layup that just beat the halftime buzzer by junior Aalliah Otero ... and took a 19-10 advantage into the locker room! Coming out of the halftime break, both squads played HARD out there and the visitors kept the score in reach ... trailing just 30-18 heading into the final stanza. Boone cut the deficit to just 30-20 early in the 4th, but that was as close as they would get as the Bricks EXPLODED for 19 points over the final 7 minutes to blow open a close game and earn a season-opening VICTORY!

Final score: Hobart 49, Boone Grove 22 ... WOW!

Junior Riley Weber had a MONSTER double-double with 13 points and a career-high 19 rebounds!! Sophomore Chesnie Unland also reached double figures in the scoring column with 10 points and senior Ladan Weinman added 9! Junior Cali Bliss corralled 9 rebounds and seniors Kyla Butler & Hallie Pendleton each recorded 6 steals in the win!

The Brickies are 1-0 on the year and will be back in action twice this upcoming week with road contests at Kouts and Griffith. GOOD LUCK LADIES!!

Wrestling

Girls

For the last two years, girls wrestling in Indiana has been an "Emerging Sport" in the eyes of the IHSAA and our girls have been emerging as an area powerhouse! The Bricks WON the IHSGW Regional last winter and saw Joanna Cantu place 4th at the State Finals! With way more than 100 schools participating in girls wrestling, the IHSAA has officially "Sanctioned" girls wrestling for the 2024-2025 season!! As the Macho Man Randy Savage might say ... OOOOOOHHHH YEEEAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!

Hobart opened the 24-25 season at Illiana Christian on Saturday for a round-robin of competition against some other area powerhouse schools!

The Brickies wrestled 4 dual matches over the course of the day and SHINED BRIGHT!! In the opener against Portage, our girls DOMINATED the mat and won 70-10! WOW!! A second round matchup against the Penn Kingsman was literally toe-to-toe. How close was it? Well, the final overall score was 42-42, but the Bricks ultimately lost the match on criteria. In round #3, it was Hobart against the host Vikings and our girls sunk their ship 46-36!! In the final dual match of the day, it was the Brickies against the Crown Point Bulldogs. Once again, this one was as close as it gets with the end result being a 40-40 tie that Hobart also ultimately lost on criteria.

So ... for the day our girls went 2-2, but showed up and looked STRONG against some GREAT competition!!

On the Lady Brickies Wrestling instagram, there was a SHOUT OUT to junior Joanna Cantu and freshman Bailey Varella for each going 4-0 on the day ... and to our back ups that had to step up and replace injured wrestlers!! GREAT JOB LADIES!!
