CPS Hispanic Affinity Group
September 2025
Bienvenidos al Año Escolar 2025-2026
Welcome to a new school year! After these first weeks, we hope you are settled and energized. Last school year, the District convened specific employee populations to come together in affinity groups. Since our particular group is experiencing unique circumstances collectively, some expressed that priority should be given to supporting students and families during this challenging time. It is our desire to remain connected as a familia through this digital space and share relevant stories and events to promote our Latino culture and heritage. Please look at the events shared in this newsletter as opportunities to unite and connect in comunidad. We want to be able to support each other and preserve our cultural identities in the spaces we inhabit.
In the Spotlight section of this newsletter, please take the opportunity to share ideas about this group and how we can meaningfully participate in activities that will make our efforts worthwhile. Also let us know how you are celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month. If you know another CPS Hispanic/Latino employee or ally (amigo) to include in our email distribution list, please send us an email to penaley@cpsboe.k12.oh.us.
Gracias por ser parte de CPS Latino!

Thank you, 2025 MLL Summer Outreach Team, for making this year’s project such an amazing success! Throughout the summer months, 27 bilingual staff supported MLL students and families in Summer Recovery and Newcomer School, community partner events and summer camps, district-organized enrollment and orientation events, student engagement activities, and ongoing outreach by phone and in-person meetings. Bilingual social workers, EL Family Coordinators, ESOL Teachers, and Paraprofessionals made over 1300 contacts, with more than 700 phone calls, 200 texts and emails, and 450 in-person meetings. In collaboration with community partners such as Santa Maria and Su Casa, as well as Project Connect and Heartfelt Tidbits, our team helped families gain access to healthy foods, medical, legal and employment services, as well as school transportation and technology,.CPS is proud to maintain close communication and support for MLL families!

Interview with Rosa Reyes about "Collective Grief."
Rosa addresses the topic of collective grief, the shared pain that many immigrants experience in the face of loss, microaggressions, and constant fear. Drawing on personal experience, she reflects on how these moments affect mental health. She shares tools for healing: validating emotions, seeking social support, self-care, and more. She also explains the impact of self-fulfilling prophecies in our lives.
Collective grief refers to the grieving process experienced by a group of individuals or a community due to a family loss, physical or verbal aggression, the challenges of immigration, microaggressions, or the aggressive attitude experienced simply because they are immigrants.
Rosa recently suffered a microaggression at a fast-food chain, and this made her reflect on the significant impact it has on mental health. Rosa offers helpful tools for recognizing and validating these experiences.
