Principal's Message Principal's Message

Dear Bancroft Community,

We hope you are enjoying a well-deserved Spring Break! As we head into the final stretch of the school year, we have a lot to look forward to and wanted to take a moment to share some exciting updates and important information.

First, we are thrilled to share that one of our own, Rachel Pearson, was recently named a recipient of the Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union Excellence in Teaching Award. Ms. Pearson will be formally honored at their annual celebration in April alongside other outstanding educators from across the Delaware Valley. We are incredibly proud of Ms. Pearson and grateful for the lasting impact she has on our students every single day.

Thank you to all of the families who joined us for Spring Conferences. These conversations are an important part of our partnership with you, and we appreciate you taking the time to connect with your child's teacher. If you were unable to attend and would like to discuss with your child's teacher, please reach out to them directly to schedule a time.

As we return from Spring Break, our 3rd through 5th grade students will participate in the PSSAs during the final two weeks of April. Here is a quick overview of the testing schedule:

  • ELA: April 20th - 22nd (Grades 3-5)
  • Mathematics: April 27th - 28th (Grades 3-5)
  • Science: April 29th - 30th (Grade 5 only)

Additional information about state testing can be found on the state testing portion of our website. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

The final stretch of the school year is always filled with memorable moments, meaningful learning, and exciting events. None of it would be possible without the partnership between our school and our families. Thank you for your continued support, your trust, and your commitment to making Bancroft a place where every student feels valued and inspired to grow. We look forward to finishing the year strong together.

Sincerely,

Gerry Weinhardt

Reminder: Cell Phones and Smart Watches at School Reminder: Cell Phones and Smart Watches at School

As a reminder, elementary students are not permitted to have cell phones or smart watches during the school day unless they are medically necessary and documented by a medical provider. We understand that families may want their children to have devices for communication before or after school, but we ask that these items remain at home.

If a student is found with a cell phone or smart watch during school hours, it will be taken to the office and a parent will be notified to pick it up. This policy helps minimize distractions and ensures that students remain focused on learning and connecting with their peers.

Important Note About State Testing: Students who are in possession of a cell phone or smart watch during the upcoming PSSA testing (mid to late April) will be in violation of the Pennsylvania Department of Education's test security policies. If a student is discovered using or having a cell phone or other unapproved electronic device during testing, the following will occur:

  • Parents will be contacted immediately
  • The student's test will not be scored
  • The student will be required to retake the entire exam
  • The student will be subject to the school's discipline policy
  • The Pennsylvania Department of Education may take further action

We appreciate your ongoing support in helping us maintain a daily learning environment that is free from the distractions that are associated with personal electronic devices.

First Grade is ready for Spring and has been enjoying the warmer weather at recess! In Science, the kids have learned about weather and the different strengths of the wind. All classes made windsocks to test the wind’s strength and the direction it blows.

We also had visitors from Partners In Outreach come visit our classes to read the story Between the Lines by Lindsay Ward that had a wonderful message of spreading happiness to make our world a better place. Each student got their own book to take home as well.

March seemed short and sweet but was very busy with St. Patrick’s Day phonics fun, the Wizards assembly, and Rocking our Socks for Down Syndrome Day. When we come back from our Spring vacation, our First Graders will travel to Longwood Gardens to learn about Plant Power to get us ready for our upcoming Life Science unit on Plants and Animals. We look forward to April showers bringing beautiful May Flowers!

We had a wonderful and busy month in second grade! Our students have been working hard, learning new skills, and showing great teamwork in the classroom! Students continued practicing their phonics skills to help them read unfamiliar words. Breaking apart words into smaller, manageable chunks has helped our students improve their fluency, accuracy, and confidence in reading! We also worked on many different vowel teams this month! Students enjoyed playing a game where they could put word parts together to make a word with two or more syllables.

In Reading, we enjoyed discussing what different cultures can teach us through storytelling. There are common themes and messages that can be found in many folktales throughout the world. In writing, we described a character’s feelings by using text evidence and illustrations. We focused on organizing our ideas into clear sentences and short paragraphs. We also enjoyed a visit from Partners in Outreach this month! They read us a story, and each student was able to take home a copy of the book! What a wonderful way to support reading!

In Math, we have been hard at work learning several strategies to add and subtract three-digit numbers. We have enjoyed using base-ten blocks and place value concepts to understand this important skill. The students have been doing a great job explaining their thinking and working together to solve word problems.

We also want to take this time to thank our amazing families for their continued support this year to help set students up for success. The home-school relationship is such an important one, and we value your partnership, time, and commitment. We look forward to meeting with our families during conferences, and we appreciate your time and flexibility in making this happen. We hope you all enjoy a relaxing and fun-filled Spring Break!

March was an exciting and busy month for third grade in so many ways!

We started the month strong by learning all about fractions—what they are, how to write them, and how to find equivalent fractions. Students also had the opportunity to exercise their creative writing skills by crafting step-by-step instruction guides on how to catch a leprechaun! This project required lots of revising and editing to make sure their leprechaun traps would really work.

In reading, we explored different types of inventions and the famous people who created them. Students were especially interested to learn about Shirley Jackson, who helped develop caller ID and call waiting. We also discovered a device called UNI, which allows hard-of-hearing students to communicate and translate their words with classmates. One of the biggest surprises was realizing that cell phones weren’t always as small as they are today!

One of the highlights of March was celebrating our third grade teacher and teammate, Ms. Rachel Pearson. Ms. Pearson was nominated for the FMFCU Foundation Celebration Award, and we honored her during a school-wide morning meeting. She was completely surprised and so deserving of this special recognition!

As we move into April, we are preparing for PSSA testing. This is the first year our third graders will take this assessment, and we are keeping things calm, cool, and positive. Please help your child do their best by ensuring they get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast each morning. Our students have been working hard, and we know they will do an amazing job!

After testing, we are looking forward to welcoming PAWS for People for a special spring visit. We’re also excited to spend more time outdoors with planting activities and enjoying reading in the sunshine.

Fourth graders recently participated in a meaningful Black History Month research project. The students explored various influential figures and events that have shaped African American history.

Each student selected a person or event to investigate. They used a variety of resources to gather information, fostering their research skills. Their projects culminated in a 5 paragraph essay,

After completing their research reports, students created engaging presentations. They practiced speaking skills and learned to convey their findings to their classmates. This project not only enhanced their understanding of history but also encouraged respect and appreciation for diversity.

In math, students are learning about fractions, including mixed numbers. They will soon relate them to decimals.

In Science and Social Studies, students researched the cause-and-effect relationships among weathering, erosion, and deposition, and how landforms are created.

March Madness Book Series Challenge ended with Harry Potter taking the prize as the most favorite book series! The students had fun each day voting and breaking down the data to see fractions and percentages.

Adopt-a-Peep: students participated in a playful project producing adoption papers and persuasive personal statements to promote their precious Peeps! (Alliteration and other figurative language welcome!)

During the month of March, 5th grade was focusing on the trait of RESPONSIBILITY. The students worked in their houses on a homework completion challenge. We tracked which houses had math and reading homework completed. The houses with the most success were Friendship, Integrity, and Grit.

In addition, students engaged in meaningful conversations during morning meetings, exploring what it means to be responsible at home, at school, and in the community. These discussions helped students reflect on their choices and understand the impact of their actions.

Developing responsibility is an essential life skill, especially as students prepare for the transition to middle school. We are proud of their growth and continued efforts!

On March 25th, our 5th grade students visited the Kennett Middle School to become more familiar with the building and the expectations that lie ahead. This visit provided a valuable opportunity for students to explore their future school, ask questions, and begin preparing for a smooth and confident transition to middle school.

This month, our first, second, and third grade classes enjoyed a special guest reader visit organized by Alicia Naimoli. In collaboration with Partners in Outreach, we welcomed volunteers from KPMG into our classrooms.

Each guest reader spent time connecting with students, sharing a read-aloud, and thoughtfully answering questions. To extend the experience beyond the classroom, every student received a copy of the featured book to take home, and additional copies were donated to the classroom and school libraries.

Students were engaged and enthusiastic throughout the visits. We hope your family enjoys reading these books together at home. To learn more about Partners in Outreach, please click here.

Health/PE

PE/Health: March Madness has arrived! Students in all grades have been working on basketball skills including dribbling, bounce and chest passes as well as shooting. When we return from break we will dive into small sided games! Please remind your child to wear sneakers on their PE and health days. Proper footwear is important for the safety of our students. The weather is finally getting warmer so students will be back to participating in Mileage Club in health.

STEM

This month, first graders learned coding using the Scratch Jr program. They created and coded stories with characters that move and talk and presented their story on the big screen in the STEM room. Second graders are finishing up their cardboard arcade games. Watch for them to come home soon. Third graders are learning about how to test the health of a stream and how to care for our watershed. Our trout are continuing to grow. We have about 95 healthy trout. Fourth graders are learning about coding a microbit and how to use the microbit to make a spinning robotic device. Fifth graders are constructing cardboard houses. Two of our fifth grader students, Reagan Peters and Emily McGee, built a special dog and cat daycare house and took their house to the Habitat for Humanity Build a House Build a Dream contest. Their house was honored as a finalist! Way to go, Reagan and Emily!

Art

Our 5th graders have been hard at work collaborating to bring our newest Bancroft Bear to life through a paper mache project. Watching our oldest students work together to create something that will represent our school community has been a highlight of the spring. We're excited to welcome our newest bear to Bancroft, where it will join us for events and celebrations throughout the remainder of the year!

Music

This month we have been movin’ and groovin! 1st grade has been making patterns with Sol and Mi singing voices (High and Low) and learning how to use our best singing voices together. We have been playing lots of instruments as well. 2nd grade has been playing lots of xylophones, and listening to music and writing what we hear! 3rd grade has been reviewing instruments families, and working on singing in rounds. Musical rounds are when groups sing the same song, but begin and end at different times. Not all songs can be rounds though! 4th grade has been working hard on recorder, and 5th grade has been working on rap projects. We are learning how to create raps and make beats of our own. Please remember that the Orchestra and Band Concert are on April 14th! Don’t forget to practice! 🙂

Information Literacy

Our fifth grade Reading Olympians are continuing to prepare for the county-wide competition at TCHS Brandywine on April 16, 2026. One highlight in March was our practice competition against some of Bancroft’s amazing teachers! The teachers did a great job, but the students were victorious! We are so proud of our fifth graders for their hard work throughout the year, and we are looking forward to representing Bancroft at the competition next month.

We are moving into testing season for our third-fifth grade students. This time of the year can be stressful and we often see students putting a lot of pressure on themselves. Here are some strategies for helping your child navigate the testing season and reduce test anxiety:

  • Positive Self-Talk: Remind your child that it is all about just doing their best! What are some positive affirmations that they could say to themselves on testing day?

  • Accept when you don’t know something: Remind your child that there may be a question that they don’t know, and that’s okay! Normalize this and encourage them to try their best.

  • Locus of Control: Remind your child what is in their control (trying their best) and what is out of their control (the types of questions on the test, how hard the test will be, etc.)

  • Mindfulness: The strategies below can be helpful for students, because they don’t need any materials and can be done right at their desk!

● Five Finger Breathing (see visual)

● 5,4,3,2,1 Mindfulness:

○ Name five things you can see

○ Name four things you can touch

○ Name three things you can hear

○ Name two things you can smell

○ Name one thing you can taste

● Belly Breathing

○ Place one hand on your belly and one hand on your chest. Take a deep breath in for four counts and then exhale slowly through the nose for eight counts. Pay attention to the rise and fall of your belly.

● Flower/Candle Breathing

○ Take a deep breath in through your nose and pretend you are smelling a flower. Exhale through your nose and pretend you are blowing out a candle. Repeat five times.

🌼 Seasonal Allergies Are Here! 🌼

Spring brings warmer weather—and seasonal allergies for many students. Common symptoms include sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, and coughing. These symptoms can sometimes mimic a cold, but allergies are not contagious.

To help your child feel their best at school:

  • Consider starting allergy medications before symptoms begin (check with your child’s healthcare provider).

  • Encourage your child to wash hands and face after outdoor play.

  • Showering and changing clothes after being outside can help remove pollen.

  • Keep windows closed at home and in the car during high pollen days.

If your child requires allergy medication during the school day, please be sure all required forms are completed and medication is provided to the nurse’s office.

Feel free to reach out to the school nurse Mrs. Carter with any questions or concerns!

Title I School-Parent-Student Compact Title I School-Parent-Student Compact

Hello Bancroft Families,

This year we created a School-Parent Compact for our Title I program. It is a requirement for all Title I schools. The goal of the compact is to outline how our school staff, families, and students can work together to create a supportive environment where every child can succeed. We will revise our compact each year with parent input from the PTO to ensure it fits the needs of our school community.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or to Dr. Jen Miller, our district Title I Coordinator at jenmiller@kcsd.org.

Thank you,
