NGSS PD - Exploring Argumentation in the Secondary Classroom

Argumentation is a key part of the evolution and progression of scientific knowledge and is one of the 8 NGSS Science and Engineering Practices. However, engaging students in this practice can be especially challenging in the classroom as it requires a complex mix of content knowledge, classroom management, instructional strategies, and creativity.

During this 4-day institute, middle and high school science educators will examine their own understandings and beliefs about scientific argumentation and will explore strategies to support students in this classroom practice. Additionally, teachers will have time to collaborate and connect with other educators as they work towards implementation in their own classrooms.

Register now for this professional learning experience designed by teachers for teachers!

(Cost: $100)

Two Follow-Up days are also included with registration: February 29 and March 21 2020

Resource Spotlight: Use Real Data in Your Classroom

datanuggets.org

Data Nuggets are free classroom activities, co-designed by scientists and teachers, designed to bring contemporary research and authentic data into the classroom. Data Nuggets include a connection to the scientist behind the data and the true story of their research. Each activity gives students practice working with “messy data” and interpreting quantitative information. Students are guided through the entire process of science, including identifying hypotheses and predictions, visualizing and interpreting data, making evidence based claims, and asking their own questions for future research. Because of their simplicity and flexibility, Data Nuggets can be used throughout the school year and across grades K-16, as students grow in their quantitative abilities and gain confidence. Data Nuggets have the potential to improve the understanding of science in society while engaging and motivating the next generation of scientists and engineers.

NGSS Formative Assessment Question Bank

Did you know we have CAST practice questions in Illuminate? We do! Follow these instructions to access the pre-made formative assessments for grades 3-12. Please contact Tressa Renne, Mimi Luong, Audrey Mason if you have questions about how to use Illuminate.

CAST Practice Available!

Refreshed practice and training tests for the California Science Test (CAST), which students, parents/guardians, and classroom teachers can access to help them become more familiar with questions on the CAST. Both the practice and training tests are grade-specific (i.e., grade five, grade eight, and high school). The practice tests include three performance tasks—one from each of the science domains (i.e., Earth and Space Sciences, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences)—and mirror the depth and breadth of the content from the operational test. The training tests are available to acquaint students with the different item types.

These practice and training tests feature all the accessibility resources on the operational CAST. Be sure to help your students access the tests so they may be ready to take the CAST this spring!
