Romig News

November 2, 2026
Dear Romig Families,
I also hope no one had extended power loss or damage due to Friday's crazy windstorm! Speaking of inclement weather, it might be a good idea to bookmark ASD's weather closure page. We always try to get closure information out as quickly as possible, but as we all know, Alaska's weather can change unpredictably. If you are not receiving ASD updates, you may have our text message number blocked, emails accidentally routing to your spam folder, or your contact information may not be current. Info on how to check your contact info in Q is included further down in this newsletter. Thank you!
This week should be pretty low key (no school Tuesday) and we'll end it with the opportunity to watch DanceWest's fall performance (which I'm hearing is going to be amazing!). Just a heads up - we do have modified bell schedules both Monday and Friday. And in other exciting news, there is information further down in this newsletter about our spring trip to Washington DC and NYC!
Lastly, it will eventually get cold for real, and we're concerned about the large number of students waiting outside before Romig opens in the morning. Please remember - the building opens to students at 8:30 am. Students should also be picked up by 4:15 pm. Staff are not available to supervise students before 8:30 am or after 4:15 pm. Thank you!
Happy November,
Bethany Essary
Principal, Romig Middle School

Veterans Day Celebrations
Romig Middle School will be honoring Veterans on Monday, November 9th. We would like to invite any Veterans or active military family members to be guest speakers in our classrooms on this day. Guests would come and present to a social studies class during their students’ social studies period (ask your student what time/period they have social studies). Class periods are 30 minutes; we would like you to present for about 20 minutes. If you are interested in being a guest speaker or if you know someone who would like to present, please let me know so we can work out the details. If you are available for more than just one period, we can arrange for you to present in other Social Studies classrooms!
Romig hosts Veteran speakers in each social studies class, even our Russian and Spanish Immersion social studies classes. If you know someone who can present in those native languages, please share this info with them.
As part of our lesson, we will also present a slideshow with photos of your Veterans. Please email your photos of Veterans or active military members to Ms. C. McNeil by Friday, November 6, 2026. All military photos are welcome and appreciated. If you send in photo(s) please be sure to include Name, Rank, Branch of Service, and Relation to Romig (ex: SSgt Terry Myers, ARMY, Father to Mrs. Myers).
Additionally, we have a hospitality room set up for our speakers. If you would like to donate food for our hospitality room, please sign up: Veterans Day Food 2026.
Thank you,
Amber Myers, Adam Johnson, Bret Clark, Caty McNeil, Juana von Buchwald, Krystyna Cullom, Lane Bottemiller, and Mary Dolenc

Visit Washington, D.C. and NYC
Dear Romig Families
Romig Trojans are heading to Washington, D.C., and New York City in the Spring of 2027, and we’d love for your student to join us! This opportunity is open to current 7th & 8th graders at Romig MS.
We are excited to share the details of this adventure and our collaboration with EF Explore America, our educational travel partner. We are hosting an informational meeting on November 12th at 6 pm. Meeting details and RSVP will be sent out later this week.
It has been our experience that when students travel, they expand their knowledge of the world around them, discover more about different people and places, grow their self-confidence, and become more independent. These skills are stepping stones for our children to become informed, engaged global citizens. We would love to have your student join us on this adventure.
In this info session, we’ll talk about:
How this experience will benefit your student
What we’ll see and do on our trip
Everything that’s included in this tour
How your child can earn academic credit
How we’re keeping this safe and affordable
Getting the student application to apply for this trip
There are limited spots on this trip, about 40-45 students. Only current Romig 7th and 8th graders are eligible for travel.
We hope to see you there and look forward to sharing how this trip can be a powerful and unforgettable chapter in your child’s life!
Thank you,
Amber Myers, Traci Stanley, John Bruce, Alison McCarrey, Grecia Barajas, and Bret Clark

Volunteering in the Schools
ASD Visitor & Volunteer Information
We are incredibly fortunate to be part of a community where volunteers support the Anchorage School District students, teachers, and staff through commitment and service. If you are interested in volunteering at Romig MS this year (including chaperoning any events), you can complete the ASD volunteer application now! All volunteers must be approved prior to visiting the schools. Be sure to select any schools you might want to volunteer at. It takes 1-2 weeks for volunteers to be approved.
