CPS Native American Programs
November 2024
🦃 Thanksgiving Break (11/25/24 - 11/29/24) 🦃
Native American Heritage Month is observed in November to call attention to the culture, traditions, and achievements of the nation’s original inhabitants and of their descendants. The official designation of November as National Native American Heritage Month was signed into law in 1990. The celebration is sometimes referred to as American Indian Heritage Month.

Native American Cultural Day 2024
On Monday, 11/18, Cherokee Nation cultural presenters were brought into our upper elementary to give cultural presentations for Native American Cultural Day. Due to the poor weather, this event was held indoors. However, our upper elementary students still got to experience shooting blow guns and playing Butterbean. We want to give the Cherokee Nation a big thank you (wado) for being such a great partner to our district!
Culture in the Library
In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, the district libraries encouraged students to check out books about Native American history and culture! Our libraries are a great partner in our efforts to promote Native American history, culture, and language.
In the elementary library, Mrs. Spivey read students cultural books. The following books were read to students to celebrate Native American Heritage Month:
"Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story" by Kevin Noble Maillard
“Seasons of the Circle: A Native American Year” by Joseph Bruchac
In November, the Native American Programs department purchased the following cultural books for the middle school library's Native American Culture section:
- "Mascot" by Charles Waters & Tracy Sorell
- "Two Tribes" by Emily Bowen Cohen
- "We Still Belong" by Christine Day
Outside the high school and middle school libraries, library staff created Native American Heritage Month bulletin boards. These boards celebrate the accomplishments of famous Native Americans in history and promote the recognition of Native American Heritage Month!
Thank you, Mrs. Spivey and the district library aides, for supporting the CPS Native American Programs!
Native American Heritage Month Lunch Bingo
Throughout November, 4th and 5th-grade students can earn a chance to come to the elementary library for lunch to play Native American Heritage Month Lunch Bingo! Thank you, Mrs. Spivey, for implementing this new activity in the elementary library!

📘Cultural Classroom Books Initiative (Round 2)📖
In November, the Native American Programs department provided our elementary & middle school teachers with Native American culture and language books and reading materials to place in their classroom libraries. This was the second time cultural books have been purchased for our teachers this school year!
This initiative provides all our students with access to Native American books and reading materials. Our elementary and middle teachers are encouraged to read Native American cultural books to their students and utilize cultural materials in their lessons.
JOM 101 Training
On Tuesday, 11/12, the Colcord JOM Program hosted one of the annual JOM 101 trainings. The evening was a great time of learning and networking with other programs! We would like to thank the Cherokee Nation JOM Program for the work they do for our students and for giving us the opportunity to host the training at our district!

Cherokee Club
Cherokee Club has been very busy the last few weeks making art projects for the Cherokee Art Competition. Students will be entering these projects on Thursday 11/21 to be judged. Projects include everything from dioramas, loom bead bracelets, sketches, paintings, metal work, and more! We are excited to see scores and placements for these pieces.
After Thanksgiving break, we will start prepping for the Language competition. This is arguably our hardest competition of the year. If your child is interested in learning Cherokee language, studying at home, and competing, please let us know!
2024 JOM Cherokee Challenge Bowl
The 2024 JOM Cherokee Challenge Bowl was held at Greasy Immersion School from 10/21 to 10/24. Colcord Public Schools sent teams to compete in every division. Over the four days of competition, CPS had eight teams compete, and seven of the eight teams placed!
A huge thank you goes out to our Special Projects Coordinators, Tashina Weaver, Katy England, and Chloe Thomas. These ladies work with students every Wednesday in the Cherokee Club, where students are taught the Cherokee language and culture and prepared for JOM competitions. Great job, ladies. We appreciate you and the work you do! Wado!
