Torrey HillIntermediate School Newsletter for December 2021

A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

December is here and it's hard to believe we only have four days left with our students this calendar year! There are no words to describe the way the halls of an elementary school come alive during the holidays. As we share in our students' excitement, we are able to remember how it feels to be a kid again! Coincidentally, all of the hope, joy, and love which transform the season seem to be exactly what the world and our community needs right now! To celebrate even more, feel free to join us by watching our outdoor caroling event that will take place this Friday at 2 PM. We will sing a few songs outside on the north, east and south sides of the building. You are welcome to come and and watch from your vehicles as we parade around the school while singing (similar to our Halloween Parade event.)

In addition to spreading the holiday joy through song, the Torrey Hill and Lake Fenton community has rallied around those affected by hardships by giving in so many ways. On that note, there were numerous families who received boxes of food and gifts, thanks to all of YOUR generous donations! Fenton Kiwanis came through with turkeys and other perishable items we distributed, as well. We appreciate you helping us positively affect their lives.

Our staff were well fed this month, too! You would not believe the smiles on the faces of the staff when oodles and oodles of cookies, brownies, special treats and even lunches were delivered to the staff recently. Thank you to our families for spending YOUR time thinking of us. We truly feel appreciated more than you know.

As always, the staff at Torrey Hill Intermediate School would like to thank our families for allowing us to be a part of your child's life. We are humbled and honored to be able to share in the education of each of our students. Great things are yet to come next year!

Best,

Mrs. Kathleen Conover

Principal

Virtual Learning- Second Semester

Feel free to reach out for more information on virtual learning through the consortium (LF, Linden and Fenton) program, as we have limited openings for the second semester. Note- our Torrey Hill Lake Fenton teachers are NOT teaching these courses. Your child would become unenrolled from their current classroom in order to participate. If you would like your child to be considered, please contact Mrs. Conover either by email or phone to share your interest. The deadline to express interest is January 5th.

Olivia Lasco won "Principal for the Day" at the Lake Fenton Band Boosters Tin Can Raffle. The two chuckled about being "twins" on the dreaming of a white Christmas-white out apparel day, too.

Food Service Updates

The food service department is happy to be able to provide all meals to all students for free this year! This is a government grant that allows us to do that. Along with the grant money there are guidelines we must follow. This grant allows for only one complete breakfast and lunch per student per school day.

A breakfast includes: 2 Grains or 1 grain and one protein item, 1 cup fruit/vegetable and Milk. To be a complete meal 3 out of the 4 items must be taken and one of the items must be a fruit or vegetable.

School Lunch is made up of 5 food groups. These groups are whole grain, protein foods, vegetables, fruit and milk. To be a complete meal, three out of five food groups must be taken and one must be a fruit or a vegetable.

Only one entrée is allowed for both meals. Students may purchase additional entrees or meal components at ala carte pricing.

Any questions please feel free to contact the Food Service office at 810-591-9449 or email at lgrant@lakefentonschools.org.

HELP WANTED! Academic Interventionists, Aides and Recess/Lunch Aides

We are in need of lunch/recess aides. Feel free to share this request with neighbors, friends, grandparents, etc. Please see the job posting below.

https://www.applitrack.com/gcaps/onlineapp/jobpostings/view.asp?internaltransferform.Url=&choosedistrict=true&applitrackclient=731&category=Student+Support+Services

We are also in need of Academic Interventionists, as well.

Please visit the link above for access to openings in ALL buildings. If you have questions about any of our job postings, please contact the building principal, Mrs. Conover.

Important Message- Reading and/or Math Support Is Available!

Our school has a team of teachers and aides who provide reading and math interventions to students who qualify and may need additional assistance. Some students receive interventions throughout the school year while others may only need help from time to time. We have trained staff who can provide these necessary interventions.

Students who receive this support, often referred to as Title One or LLI, are not removed from core instruction. Instead, they mainly receive support during non-instructional times such as silent reading time. The interventions are conducted in both small group settings and/or within the general education classroom. You will be informed if your child is receiving these services so please look for a special “Parent/Student Compact” coming soon.

If you do not want your child to receive this support, please contact either your child’s teacher or Mrs. Conover, principal by October 2, 2021. (This information has been previously shared).

Change In End Of Day Pick Up?

If your students need updates from you (parents/guardians) on taking a different mode of transportation home, please call our office before 2 PM. We do our best to get all "change in transportation" messages delivered to the students at the end of the school day and we certainly do not want any errors.

Any bus changes must be approved by the principal at least 24 hours in advance. Students are not allowed to take alternative buses home unless their is an emergency situation. Please do not use bus transportation as a means of transporting friends for after school social or extracurricular events. Our buses have capacity limits and we cannot add students to bus routes. We care about the safety of our students and therefore must closely monitor ridership on our school buses.
