Snyder Park Elementary December 2023 Wildcat Newsletter

Message from Principal Sledge Message from Principal Sledge

In December, we have been focusing on putting first things first, which is Habit 3 of Leader in Me. Beginning with the End in Mind, as you can see throughout this newsletter, December was very eventful for our staff, students, and community. Our Winter Concert, Dinner and a Show, Don't Be Tardy to the Party silent disco, giving week, and door decorating contest events were all very exciting for our Snyder Park community. We would like to keep the momentum going for 2024. I wish you a very healthy and prosperous new year and Think Win-Win!

~W. Sledge, Principal

Does Parent Involvement Really Help Students? Here's What the Research Says

Parent involvement can lead to improved student outcomes, research shows, but some forms are more helpful than others.

Did you know that providing a well lit area for your student to do homework or read, waking your student up on time, helping them get ready for school, and having conversations about school are all ways to be involved in your students education? You don't have to know how to multiply and divide fractions, or identify key elements in a story- just simply be there for support and encouragement! Research shows that family engagement in the home is the most important resource for early learning (from journals.sagepub.com). This is strengthened even more when we engage and have different experiences with each other. Enjoy these fun winter activities with your student!

Leader In Me Habit 3: Put First Things First

In the month of December, we will be focusing on Habit 3: Put First Things First this means to decide what is most important and to take care of that first. Thinking about what needs to be done tomorrow or by the end of the week can be overwhelming, especially for children. Learning to think of which things are the most important and taking care of them first allows children (and adults) to be less stressed. If your child uses a planner at school, then he or she has a great organizational tool to Put First Things First in writing. By writing down his or her responsibilities and planning ahead, last-minute trips to the store, missed events, or missed homework are avoided. If your child does not use a planner, having a weekly log would also be helpful. This could simply be a piece of paper that is used each week. Modeling this behavior is one of the best ways to teach children.

Some ways that you can practice this with your student are:

1. Create a list of things your child needs to accomplish throughout a week. With your child, rank the tasks in importance. Then rewrite the list in order of importance. Use a planner or calendar to schedule time so that the important things are done first.

2. Role-play with your child about the consequences of forgetting to study for a math test. How will your child feel? What are the consequences? Then role-play how it will feel to be well prepared and get a great match score!

3. Encourage your child to design or decorate his or her own planner or weekly activity log.

4. Read Chapter 3 of The 7 Habits of Happy Kids book with your child and then complete the Parent's Corner.

Students receive PBIS points for being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe. Students also receive PBIS points for attendance. Each month, classroom time is set aside for students to shop our online PBIS store where they are able to use their points to purchase items of their choice. Some items include bouncy balls, spinning bracelets, cotton candy, extra recess, high fives with Mr. Holliday, and fine dining. Our fine dining has received a 10/10 rating from our fourth grade students!

Our attendance data shows that we have the most absences on Monday's and Friday's. Please encourage your student to attend school each day and to be here on time. We are currently working on attendance incentives that will encourage our students to be here each day!
