Eugene Ashley High School
News from the Nest

Excellence through achievement, honor, & service
Ashley is now playing in regional playoffs against Pine Forest this week! Come cheer for our Eagles THIS FRIDAY @ the Nest. Congrats to our coaching staff and student athletes- this was the first time in school history that we played for a share of the conference title! They didn't win; however, they fought a great fight and we know they are the BEST TEAM around!! We are making history and we are doing it the EAGLE WAY! Let's hope they keep moving on towards a STATE title! FYI, the state sets the pricing for admission to playoff games - please check our Athletic page about pricing to get into Football, Soccer, or Flag games during this time. There are no discounted tickets and no season passes are permitted.
A reminder: November 3rd is a teacher workday (no school for students) and VOTING DAY for our community. Several items on the ballot and of course I don't care who or what you vote for, but I do want to recommend voting...The NHC Schools "School Bond", if voted in [for], would provide $320.5 million in capital projects and across our county to improve our facilities, including our buildings, technology, security, and it will overall help students. To learn more, please visit https://www.nhcs.net/community/2026-bond
Reminder to parents: there's been an up tick in parent pickups in the front lot. Please do NOT use that lot; it is for staff, bussing, and pedestrians; there is no drop off or pick up at the front of the school (not even to park and pick up) - all drop off and pick up must take place on the Anderson side or at the rock THANK YOU!
If you didn't see it last week, the Ladies of AHS Flag Football won their Companionship and will be moving on to States -- Congratulations and they deserve to be seen once more, so, take a look below at those winning Screaming Eagles! Congrats to our Cross Country team where --for the first time ever the boys and girls teams are moving on to State Championships this Friday (in Raleigh)! See below for a specific shoutout to the team.
Look below for more news and updates--for example, we already know that next year we are going to be able to offer courses and/or a Plumbing Internship through our CFCC partnership, so, read about that and about our parent organization helping us raise funding for Ashley through HONEY starting on November 4th ...and so much more below.
Keep those WINGS UP!
Go Eagles!
Sincerely,
Michael Perez, AHS Principal

What is CTE?
Career and Technical Education (CTE) gives students the opportunity to explore career fields while learning skills they can use in future jobs and professions. Through specialized courses, industry certifications, and career-focused experiences, students can discover their strengths and gain a better understanding of the opportunities available to them. Within CTE, we are making sure students get Work based instruction, or WBL.
What is WBL?
Work-Based Learning (WBL) allows high school students to explore careers and gain real-world experience while in school. Opportunities include job shadowing, internships, apprenticeships, workplace tours, and part-time jobs. These experiences help students build valuable job skills, connect with employers, and prepare for future careers.
Meet our WBL Coordinator
Randall Langley started at Ashley in 2023 as Ashley’s Special Populations Coordinator and Assistant Basketball Coach. His role transitioned this year to Work-Based Learning Coordinator helping students gain real skills and real experiences in the New Hanover County Community. Email Mr. Langley at randall.langley2@nhcs.net for more information about Ashley’s WBL programs.
Mr. Langley offers a variety of services including:
- Job Shadows
- Student Internships
- Workplace Tours, Field Trips, and Career Exploration
- Resumes & Job Application Assistance
- Apprenticeship Opportunities
- Part Time Employment
- Service Learning
WBL Includes Field Trips
CTE offers a variety of field trips throughout the year to help students explore career opportunities, visit local businesses and college, and gain real-world insight into different industries and career pathways.
This week, Ms. Haney’s Entrepreneurship and AP Business students visited UNCW to speak with representatives from the Cameron School of Business and tour the UNCW campus while Ms. Penegar's Game Art & Design students visited Cape Fear Games where they learned about the history of gaming, ethical standards, game design, marketing, and more. Ask your CTE teacher about other field trip opportunities.
NC Youth Legislative Assembly
Youth Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Services Office of the N.C. General Assembly is accepting applications for Youth Legislative Assembly, scheduled for March 5-7, 2027, in Raleigh. Applications will be accepted through Dec. 15.
YLA -- open to students in North Carolina who are in good standing at a public, private, charter or home school -- teaches high school students about the laws governing North Carolinians as well as the lawmaking process. Students draft, debate and vote on mock legislative bills while developing skills in research, interviewing, group facilitation and policy writing. As the bills are debated, the students get a chance to practice communicating their ideas, opinions, and experiences in a team-building environment.
