Summer BBQ Party Invitation

We look forward to celebrating summer with you!

Principal's Corner

Over the last few months we have received much input from our parent community with ideas for how to improve things at JES. The parent forum we held in February clearly stated that parents want to see more opportunities for outdoor educational experiences for JES students. In a subsequent survey we administered related to activities parents want to see to include them at JES, a community garden received the most votes. We are excited to announce that a team of educators has been working to plan some wonderful experiences related to gardening. We are looking at hosting three events this spring:

Saturday, April 12th from 10:00am-12:00pm: A Starter Party on where we will plant seeds indoors to get them growing

Saturday, May 3rd from 10:00am-12:00pm: A garden clean up party where parents, students, and educators will work together to prepare the garden for planting

Saturday, May 31st 10:00am-12:00pm: The planning day when parents, students, and educators will plant a portion of the garden. The rest of the garden will be planted by classrooms during the school day.

We are very excited to partner with you to teach students about an ancient sustainability practice of gardening while also having fun!

Exciting Things Happening at JES!

We have several new projects we have undertaken which are on the cutting edge of technology with students engaging in high end Science Technology, Engineering, Att, and Mathematics (STEAM) work. A multidisciplinary team of educators including classroom teachers, Unified Arts teacher, paraeducators, and our IT Coordinator have collaborated to bring the following exciting programs to JES students:

  • Cospaces VR project in Maker Space

    • Cospaces is a software program that allows students to learn to program computers using Block coding. Block coding is the beginning coding language for young students to gain a conceptual understanding of how to program a computer.

    • JES students in grades 4-6 are using this program in the Makerspace and classrooms

    • Once students have mastered the basics, they can create a virtual world similar to ones they see in games like Minecraft

    • Using the school’s virtual reality headsets from Meta, our students are able to explore the worlds they have created

    • See pictures below

  • Robotics Club

    • We are creating a Robotics club / team to begin in the fall

    • We have entered into a partnership with FIRST LEGO League Vermont

    • We are fortunate to have guidance from Mr. Scott McCalla, a FIRST Senior Robotics mentor, who will provide valuable expertise and resources. Scott is an LUHS graduate!

    • Students will use LEGO Education SPIKE Prime kits to design, build, and code their own robots

    • We are also discussing a partnership with the LUHS Robotics team

    • We are hoping to enter a team of students from our club into the statewide robotics competition

    • Dan Silver has been instrumental in helping us raise $2,000 for materials for this club, including a partnership with Johnson Woolen Mills

JES Weather Station

We are thrilled to announce that JES now has its very own weather station installed atop the school thanks to the JES Connections Afterschool Program!

Thanks to our connection with Weather Underground, we can use real-time, accurate weather data to enhance our lessons and provide students with hands-on learning experiences.

Personal Weather Station Dashboard | Weather Underground

Weather Underground provides local & long-range weather forecasts, weather reports, maps & tropical weather conditions for locations worldwide.

Developmental Screening & Preschool Registration Lamoille North Supervisory Union

We are offering developmental screenings for any child between ages three through five who live in the Lamoille North school district. At the screening you can learn more about our school based preschool programs and Act 166 partner programs. During the screening, children will have the opportunity to interact with typical preschool materials such as art supplies, blocks, puzzles and imaginative play materials. Educators will interact with the children to gain information about each child’s development in the areas of cognitive, motor, communication and social-emotional development. Parents will complete paperwork and questionnaires about their child’s development. The screening is free and will take about forty-five minutes.

If you are interested in registering for a school based or Act 166 partner program you can follow this process...

Register for Our Third Annual
Youth Chess Day

Saturday, April 19

Dear Fellow Vermonter,

As April nears, I’m very pleased to announce that my office will once again host a “Youth Chess Day.” Over the first two years of this event, more than 250 young Vermonters from across the state have come out to play one of the oldest games in human history.

The response has been overwhelming each year, which is why we are happy to continue putting on this now annual event. The third-annual “Youth Chess Day” will be held on Saturday, April 19 from 11:00 AM to 4 PM at Vermont State University in Randolph.

The Learn to Play session is a great opportunity for first through eighth grade students to learn how to play and hone their skills, while more experienced players grades first through twelfth can test their knowledge in a recreational tournament in the afternoon. I encourage ALL young Vermonters, grades 1-12, to sign up and take part – whether you have years of playing or you’re just starting out. Students with all levels of experience are welcome and everyone is encouraged to join together for a free lunch.

To Register, Click HERE

Chess helps young people improve their intellectual skills, as well as their ability to strategize, think ahead, and focus. It’s also a great way to make friends and build community while playing a fun game. I know that’s exactly why we see students come back year after year.

I look forward to seeing some familiar faces, watching how players have progressed their skills over the last year, and hopefully meeting some newcomers. You can watch videos of our first two events here:
First Annual Youth Chess Day; Second Annual Youth Chess Day.

If you know someone who may be interested in participating, please forward this Buzz along.

Sincerely,

Bernie Sanders
