What Parents Need to Know About MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports)

What is MTSS?

MTSS is a school-wide approach that helps all students succeed—academically, behaviorally, socially, and emotionally. It ensures that students get the right support at the right time based on their individual needs.

__________________________________________________________________

Key Things Parents Should Know:

1. MTSS is for ALL students.
It’s not just for students who are struggling. Every student benefits from strong, research-based instruction and support through MTSS.

2. Support is given in “tiers.”

· Tier 1: Quality academic instruction, pro-active behavioral and social-emotional support for ALL students.

· Tier 2: Small group support for students who need extra help (with anything impacting school success)

· Tier 3: Individualized support for students with more intensive needs in a specific area(s).

3. Decisions are based on data.
Teachers and school problem solving teams (PST) regularly review how students are doing through classroom performance, assessments, and other data. This helps them decide what kind of support is needed—and when to adjust it.

4. MTSS helps with more than academics.
In addition to reading and math, MTSS can help students improve behavior, focus, organization, and social-emotional skills. A student can be pre-referred to the PST team (Tier 2/3) for anything impacting school success.

5. It’s flexible.
Students can move between levels of support as their needs change. The goal is to give support only as long as it’s needed.

6. You are a partner.
As a parent, you’ll be kept informed if your child is receiving additional support. Your input matters! Feel free to ask questions, share concerns, and work with your child’s teachers and school problem solving team (PST). If your child is referred to the PST, the leader will contact you to discuss the referral. You will receive a parent letter as well as a parent questionnaire. You are a partner in the process.

Can you refer your child to the PST team? Absolutely! Please call the school’s PST leader, Special Education Coordinator (SEC), or 504 coordinator (contact information listed below).

7. MTSS is not special education or a 504 plan.
MTSS is different from special education services or 504 plan accommodations—but it can help the school identify if a student may need additional support.

Questions?
Talk to your child’s teacher or the school’s problem-solving team leader. They’re happy to explain how MTSS works in your school and how it can support your child.

  • Our school's PST leader is: Mrs. Deanna Eyler

If your student receives services under an IEP or 504, MTSS problem-solving happens with the IEP or 504 team.

Please call the SEC or 504 coordinator to set up a meeting.

  • Our school’s SEC is: Mrs. Christine Fisher
  • Our school’s 504 coordinator is Ms. Alyssa Maxwell
