Parents, please model safe pedestrian practices when walking to and from school.

  • Never cross mid-block, even if you are holding your child's hand
  • Choose a safe walking route and practice this route when school is not in session
  • When crossing, always use a crosswalk
  • Cross at intersections
  • Make eye contact with drivers
  • Look left, right, and left before crossing the street

Traffic Garden - Pittman Elementary School Traffic Garden - Pittman Elementary School

Traffic Gardens are scaled-down spaces where children and families learn safe bicycling practices. They provide a protected area to allow kids to play on bikes and learn how to navigate traffic safely and confidently, as well as share the environment with other users. Jessie Zimmerman, the PE teacher at Pittman ES, created a traffic garden for his students after his administration informed him that the blacktop was being replaced. His principal wanted him to design the blacktop and bring it to life. Jessie was told that space and his imagination were his only limitations. He wanted to be sure to incorporate an active blacktop that could be used for all subjects, and he received input from the school. Both teachers and students agreed that it would feel like a collective project when finished.

Jessie was inspired to create a Traffic Garden because Pittman ES has a large biking program. He wanted to create a space for students to ride and repair bikes. Mr. Zimmerman said, "I wanted to be sure to incorporate an active blacktop that could be used for all subjects, not only benefitting my PE/biking department but also to assist students interacting with other students and academic learning." He added, "Having this garden at our school has turned our biking unit from a fun hobby to applying it in the real world." To do this, Jessie uses traffic signs and road paintings. He has a bike parking lot, a place for students to assess and repair their bikes, and a pedestrian crossing area.

Pittman ES - Congratulations!

There are many students who do not have transportation to/from school. During the month of October, Safe Routes to School was able to donate two bicycles to Garside MS and three bicycles to Cozine ES as a means of transportation. Helmets and bike locks were also given to these students.

Pittman ES hosted a Walk-a-Thon for their students and seven lucky winners each received a bicycle, lock, and helmet. Congratulations go out to those students. Keep moving!

RBWTSD honors icon Ruby Bridges and her brave walk to school on November 14, 1960. On this date, Ruby became one of the first Black children to integrate an all-white school in New Orleans. RBWTSD gives children the opportunity to celebrate Ruby's courage and to inspire the next generation of leaders to end racism and all forms of bullying one step at a time. Several CCSD schools participated this year, including Dearing ES. Students at Dearing ES received t-shirts, pennants, stickers, and more! CCSD K-9 Unit helped support Dearing ES, as over 700 students walked to honor Ruby Bridges.
