Dear McKelvey Community,

It is hard to believe that Spring Break is upon us! It won't be long before the warm weather arrives. It is my hope that you are able to spend quality time together and recharge your batteries in order to finish the year off strong!

As we get ready to finish out the school year, here are some strategies to help your child succeed.

  • Set a regular bedtime.
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • Don't let your child stay home unless they are truly sick.
  • Keep in mind that complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.

I hope you have a great break and I appreciate everything you do to make McKelvey a successful place to be. See you back March 25th!

The information below can be found in the 23-24 McKelvey Family Handbook on our school's website, but we wanted to also highlight it here as a reminder.

If you need to change your child’s dismissal plan on any given day, please contact the office via the main phone line at 314-415-6500 no later than 2:00pm or send written notification to school with your child. Email notification is acceptable only if you include the office staff as part of your email. lesser@parkwayschools.net and kcopeland1@parkwayschools.net. This is imperative, as teachers are not always able to check email and phone messages during the day or may be absent from school. If the change in dismissal requires your child to ride a different bus (e.g., to a friend’s or babysitter’s house) or to ride their regular bus but get off at a different stop, please include all necessary bus numbers in your communication. The office will issue a bus pass for your child. Whenever possible, please notify the office via email or phone no later than 2:00 p.m. to allow sufficient time to notify the teacher and your child. Without prior notification from a parent/guardian, all students will follow their normal dismissal routine.

Last PTO Meeting of the School Year - March 26th! Last PTO Meeting of the School Year - March 26th!

Dear McKelvey Community,

Please join us Tuesday after Spring Break (3/26) at 6:30 PM for the PTO Meeting at McKelvey Primary. We will have a guest speaker on students' mental health and an upcoming wellness program. We'll also be looking ahead to finalize next year's budget. Childcare supervision available for potty-trained kids.

Our guest speaker, Brian Kuhn, is the director of the Student Wellness Program (SWP) through Mental Health America of Eastern Missouri. The SWP is a mental wellness screener that helps to identify students who may need additional mental health support & connect families with community mental health resources. Parkway has utilized this program for a few years now, and it has been a wonderful tool for supporting our students' social/emotional needs.
The SWP is scheduled to be offered at McKelvey in April.

Thank you!

Amy McCall

Seasonal Allergy Management

Spring allergies begin in February and last until the early summer. During spring, outdoor molds release spores and trees, grasses, and weeds release pollen. The immune systems can see mold spores or pollen as invaders and release chemicals, including histamine, into the bloodstream to defend against them. It’s the release of these chemicals that causes allergy symptoms. Strategies to avoid allergy triggers are:

  • Monitor pollen and mold counts.
  • Stay indoors on dry, windy days. The best time to go outside is after a good rain, which helps clear pollen from the air.
  • Keep windows and doors shut at home and in your car during allergy season.
  • Take a shower, wash your hair and change your clothes after you’ve been working or playing outdoors. Rinse hands and face off with water when you return indoors.
  • Wear a filtered mask while working or doing chores outdoors.
  • Do not hang laundry outside.
  • Use high-efficiency filters to remove allergens from your home.
  • Keep indoor air dry with a dehumidifier.
  • Start taking allergy medication before symptoms begin (oral antihistamines, decongestants, nasal spray, etc). You may want to talk with your child's doctor for the medication they would recommend.

Be a part of something special! The McKelvey Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) is made up of the parents of all the students at both McKelvey schools (K-5) and all teachers. We work together for the benefit of students to plan events, fundraisers, volunteer, take care of our teachers, and provide amazing resources to enhance our student learning. In short - the PTO helps make McKelvey awesome!

As a parent/guardian of a McKelvey Dragon, you are automatically a member. Please get involved as much as you are able. There are many ways, big and small, to connect and contribute to our school community. PTO's general meetings are led by our PTO Board, a small group of elected parents and teacher representatives. All are invited, and meetings are a great place to share your voice and hear the voices of others. We'll see you there!

This year's meetings will be held on the following dates at alternating locations:

  • January 23 - 6:30 PM in the Intermediate Library
  • March 26 - 6:30 PM in the Primary Library

If have any questions, please contact McKelvey PTO at mckelveypto@gmail.com.

Volunteering at School

The success of our students would not be possible without the involvement and support of parents and the community. We love to connect with families in as many ways possible throughout the school year. Get a head start on approval for field trips, working in the library, or assisting with classroom projects by completing Parkway's required steps for volunteering at school. We look forward to seeing you in our school this coming year!

For New Volunteers - CLICK HERE to start the approval process.

For Returning Volunteers - Every July, Parkway resets all of our volunteer accounts to renewal required. Your background information is good for up to six years from the time you completed it with MACHS as long as you stay active as a volunteer from year to year. Therefore, there are only a few steps you need to complete as a returning volunteer. Please CLICK HERE to begin.
