BIDDEFORD MIDDLESCHOOL NEWSLETTERJune 16, 2026

Good Afternoon Parents & Guardians,

As our school year comes to a close, I want to thank the teachers, parents, and students for a collaborative effort in making the 2025-2026 school year a success.

The weather has certainly reminded us that it is time to break for the summer and to enjoy some family time outside. I would like to wish each and every family a very safe and healthy summer. We look forward to seeing you back in September, while wishing our 7th graders the best at BHS.

End-of-the-Year Grading End-of-the-Year Grading

As you may recall from previous newsletters this year, Biddeford Middle School transitioned to Infinite Campus as our primary platform for reporting student progress and academic achievement. We understand that this transition has brought questions for many families, and we anticipate there may be a few additional questions as we conclude the 2025–2026 school year.

Please take a few moments to watch the attached video tutorial, which provides step-by-step instructions on how to access your student's final academic grades once the school year has ended. We appreciate your patience and support as we continue to learn and grow with this new system. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office for assistance.

This video was made using the online version of the Parent Portal, not the mobile app. While the app is set up in a similar way, things might look slightly different on the app version.

Since 2015, Biddeford Schools have sent students to the Odyssey of the Mind (OM) World Finals, and this year was no different. Two teams from BIS and BMS attended the OM World Finals competition at Iowa State University last week. The BIS Performance Team tied for 33rd place in Division 1 and did one of their best performances in front of many judges. The BMS Technical Team tied for 23rd place in Division 2, improving their scores from the state tournament.

These students not only competed against students their age from all over the world, but they also experienced being on a college campus with over 15,000 people. The competition had more competitors than any Olympics, and students participated in a parade of countries during the Opening Ceremonies, lived in college dorms, had meals from college cafeterias, and traded pins and danced with students of all ages and nationalities. All 11 students were new to the world competition, and they had an experience of a lifetime!

STEM + M STEM + M

We are very excited about the new STEM + M Program coming to Biddeford Middle School next year.

Beginning next fall, Biddeford Middle School will offer STEM + M as a Unified Arts (UA) course option for our 7th grade students. We are honored that Biddeford Middle School was selected by the STEM + M initiative and the U.S. Department of Defense as a site to bring this innovative program to our school community.

STEM + M expands upon the traditional STEM model (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) by adding a focus on Manufacturing. The program is designed to provide students with engaging, hands-on learning experiences that connect classroom learning to real-world applications and future career pathways.

The initiative is part of a larger national effort to help students explore interests and opportunities related to:

  • Engineering and design
  • Technology and innovation
  • Manufacturing and skilled trades
  • Problem solving and teamwork
  • Career pathways connected to high-demand industries

Open Meal Sites

As we head into summer, we want to highlight an important resource for families: free summer nutrition programs. For many children, school breakfast and lunch are essential meals during the year, and we want to ensure no child goes hungry when school is out. Thanks to the USDA, free meals are available at designated summer sites for all children 18 and under—no registration or ID required.

Are you eligible to receive $120 for each of your school-aged child(ren)?

Sun Bucks is back and Youth Full Maine will continue to support families through free food distributions across the area. We encourage all families to take advantage of these valuable resources to help keep our students nourished and ready for the year ahead.

The Biddeford Education Foundation is proud to announce its Ninth Annual Pillars of Pride Celebration, taking place on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at The Lincoln Hotel.

This year, BEF is honored to recognize two outstanding Pillars of Pride whose dedication, service, and commitment have made a lasting impact on our school community: Robert Davies (1942–2024), beloved longtime Biddeford High School educator, and MaineHealth Sports Performance & Physical Therapy – Saco, a steadfast community partner and supporter of student wellness and success.

Through their generosity, leadership, and countless contributions over the years, these honorees have enriched students' lives and strengthened our schools. We are excited to celebrate their remarkable legacies and invite you to join us for an evening of recognition, reflection, and community.

Tickets are $50 per person and include admission to the event, heavy appetizers, and one drink ticket. Proceeds from the event directly support programs, opportunities, and student needs that fall outside the regular school budget, helping us continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of local students.

Coming This Fall: Bell-to-Bell Cell Phone Ban Coming This Fall: Bell-to-Bell Cell Phone Ban

User uploaded image

Beginning August 1, 2026, all public schools across Maine must adopt and enforce a new “bell-to-bell” cell phone policy in accordance with recently updated state law (LD 2212 - Committee Amendment A; Part GG). This means students in grades K–12 will be required to keep personal devices, including cell phones, smart watches, and other devices with internet or cellular capabilities, stored away for the entire school day–from the first bell to dismissal. The goal of this statewide effort is to reduce distractions, support student mental health, and limit opportunities for cyberbullying during the school day.

Our district has already taken important steps in this direction with our current cell phone policy JICJ; however, this will be more restrictive and include smart watches. Over the past year, high school students have surrendered their phones upon entering their classrooms, with limited use during lunch, while elementary and middle school students have kept devices in lockers or at home. These efforts have provided a strong foundation, and we have seen firsthand how reducing phone access can positively impact focus, engagement, and school culture.

As we align with the new state law, we are in the process of finalizing a consistent, district-wide approach. Clear expectations and consistent consequences will be in place to support the new policy, along with limited exceptions as outlined in the law.

This new law reflects a growing understanding nationwide that minimizing cell phone use during the school day supports stronger learning environments and healthier social interactions for students. We are committed to implementing this transition thoughtfully and will continue to share updates, including the final policy, procedures and expectations, as we prepare for the upcoming school year. Thank you for your partnership as we take this important step together in support of our students’ success.
