Bulldog Weekly Update

From the Principal's Desk
Dear Hylton Families,
It is hard to believe that we are entering the last week of October and approaching the end of the first quarter! Friday, October 30, marks the close of our first grading period. We encourage students to make the most of this final week by checking their grades, completing outstanding assignments, and reaching out to their teachers if they need assistance. This is also a great opportunity for families to recognize their students’ accomplishments and have conversations about their progress as we close out the quarter.
This past Friday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Hylton’s Class of 2006 back to campus for their 20-year reunion! Our alumni enjoyed touring the school, revisiting familiar spaces, and seeing the many changes that have taken place over the years. From the gymnasium and hallways to the Commons, auditorium, updated school branding, and our new television and production facilities, there was plenty to explore. It was wonderful to spend time with our former students, hear some of their favorite memories, and see their reactions to how much the school has changed. Even after 20 years, their connection to Hylton was clear. Once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog!
A reminder for families as you plan ahead: Students will not have school on Monday, November 2, or Tuesday, November 3. Classes will resume on Wednesday, November 4. Please keep these dates in mind as you make arrangements for the following week.
As always, thank you for your continued support and partnership. We appreciate the role our families play in helping students navigate the school year and encouraging them along the way. I wish all of our Hylton families a wonderful week ahead!

- All cell phones and personal electronic communication devices may be turned on and used within the school and on the school campus before or after the bell-to-bell school day.
- Cell phones and wireless communication devices may be used on school buses provided the device does not distract the driver, compromise safety, or violate the Prohibited Content and Use for All Students provisions detailed below.

- blankets
- pajamas
- robes

- clothing items promoting violence, drugs, alcohol, or guns

Classes start at 7:30; please give yourself a buffer of 15-20 minutes for anticipated traffic backups on Spriggs Road.
Thank you for your cooperation in supporting the safety of our students.
Important Attendance Information for Parents
Consistent attendance is one of the most important ways to help students stay engaged, keep up with learning, and remain on track for success. Please review these key reminders from PWCS Regulation 724-1: Attendance, Absences, Excuses, and Tardies.
What parents need to know:
- All students who come to school tardy must check in at the Kiosk in the main office. Students will receive an unexcused tardy pass to class. Parent and/or doctor's notes excusing the tardy to school will be updated in ParentVue within 24 hours.
Schools may require a doctor’s note if a student misses three consecutive days or a total of 10 days during the school year due to illness.
Family trips and travel-related absences are unexcused.
Students are considered chronically absent when they miss 10% or more of the school year. Both excused and unexcused absences count.
Students are expected to complete missed assignments and assessments after any absence.
Military-connected students may receive up to five excused absences to visit a parent or guardian called to active duty or on leave from active duty.
Why it matters: Missing school early in the year can affect attendance habits. Students who miss 2–4 days in September are more likely to miss nearly a month of school by the end of the year.
How families will be notified: PWCS tracks attendance and notifies parents/guardians when students are absent. If the school has not received prior notification, families will receive daily text messages in the morning and evening. Attendance letters may also be sent for three unexcused absences, excessive excused absences, or chronic absenteeism.
How to report an absence:
Day-of or planned absences: Use ParentVUE to report the absence.
Past absences: Email HSHS-Attendance@pwcs.edu and include “ABSENCE” in the subject line, the student’s name, reason for absence, dates, and a contact phone number.
