“Foster Growth by Challenging Critical Thinkers to Take Risks,
Honor Differences & Care for Others”
SPOTLIGHT ON WRITING
Gold Rush is implementing a new writing resource called Benchmark Writing Workshop. Benchmark Workshop is a comprehensive writing program that incorporates best writing practices, targets state standards and aligns to GRE's Benchmark Reading Workshop curriculum. This resource follows our workshop structure, which ensures the majority of daily writing blocks are spent applying skills and strategies.
As a part of the writing model, students write for long periods of time each day. They try the craft moves modeled in the initial mini lesson in their own writing. Students across grades K-5 are currently focused on informational writing. Fifth graders are writing like scientists. Second, third and fourth graders are sharing their expertise on a variety of topics, including a specific animal, a favorite sport and our school. Students in all grade levels are learning how to structure their nonfiction pieces and incorporate domain specific vocabulary. They are also including text features to enhance their writing.
As teachers are implementing the Benchmark writing curriculum they are finding parallels with prior instructional routines and practices. Gold Rush is proud of students’ exceptional writing and teachers' ability to use the new resource.
THE ART OF PERFORMING
In music students are showcasing their ability to sing and play instruments with accurate pitch, rhythm and expression in class performances. Third graders are enthusiastically learning how to read and play three note songs on the recorder. Students reflect on their accuracy and pitch and share strategies for improving their tone and ability to work together.
Second graders worked together to perform a piece that incorporated a variety of instruments. Students had to collaborate as they played different rhythms and notes. Listen to their piece by clicking on the video above.
We thank Mrs. Petty for teaching our students how to read music, play a variety of instruments, sing and perform for others.
SUPPORTING SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL LEARNING
Gold Rush is fortunate to have a full time counselor, Mrs. Fitch. Mrs. Fitch pushes into all classrooms monthly to support students' social and emotional development. As you can see from the data below, Mrs. Fitch taught over 270 lessons last year for all 647 students!
Mrs. Fitch teaches students to recognize emotions and coping strategies. For example this week GRE's youngest students learned about feeling cranky. Students labeled emotions that are similar to cranky, such as grumpy, mad, tired and frustrated, and then read the book Crankenstein. Students learned events and circumstances that may trigger these feelings and numerous coping strategies. Students did an amazing job sharing coping strategies with each other while playing "Cranky Card Game."
This is one example of how Mrs. Fitch helps all students identify and manage emotions. We appreciate how her lessons evolve across the grade levels. We appreciate the impact a full time counselor has on our school and individual students.
HOPE YOU SEE YOU TONIGHT AT WESTERN NIGHT!
Gold Rush's PTO is hosting Western Night tonight! The evening will be filled with yard games, face painting, food trucks, a pumpkin patch and more! We hope to see you this evening from 5:00-7:00.
We look forward to fall conferences on October 10th and 12th. This is a great opportunity to celebrate your child's growth, discuss his/her goals and establish next steps. Your child's teacher will be sending sign up links in the coming days if she has not done so already.
We look forward to meeting with you soon!
OCTOBER 2023
On August 8, the Douglas County School District Board of Education unanimously voted 7-0 to place a $66 million Mill Levy Override (MLO) and $484 million Bond on the November 2023 ballot.
If passed by voters, these new funds would be used at our school to:
Increase teacher and staff pay
Enhance safety and security
Addition of Campus Security Specialist
Refresh student and staff technology
Make much needed repairs and upgrades to our building
Recaulk concrete joints
Reseal exterior walls
Repair flashing
Upgrade fire alarm system
Upgrade control system
Install new intercom system
Teachers in the Douglas County School District earn, on average, $19,000 less compared to a neighboring school district. Additional MLO funding, if passed by voters, would enable DCSD to pay teachers and staff more competitively and to increase security staffing support for our schools.
DCSD teachers, on average, would receive a 9% pay increase, as reflected in these salary schedules
Support staff, such as bus drivers, educational assistants, custodians, etc., would receive a 9% pay increase
Other staff would receive a 7% pay increase
A $484 million Bond, if passed by voters, would be used to expand trade, career and technical education opportunities; perform safety and security upgrades; and ensure safe and adequate learning environments for students and staff. The Bond would provide for three new elementary schools in growing areas of our county, as well as the expansion of two middle schools.
If the MLO and Bond are approved by voters, Douglas County homeowners can expect to pay approximately $200 per year for a home valued at $1,000,000.
You can read more about DCSD’s funding challenges and arguments for and against the ballot initiatives on our website. Thank you for being an engaged and informed member of our school community!
